"2012 has been a wide range of things for Unicycle Loves You, but a failure isn't one of them. With two albums in their rear view mirror, the Chicago trio released Failure in February. Taking complete control of the recording process, Jim Carroll created the record he had always wanted to make. Once regarded as a quirky indie pop band, the delicious proportions of reverb and noise combined with Carroll's cynical lyrics, on Failure, have given Unicycle Loves You a reboot as a noisy garage rock band armed with melodic hooks. Following the release of Failure, Unicycle Loves You hit [...]

Unicycle Loves You is giving away their latest album away digitally for free this week . You can catch the band this weekend, Jul 21st, at Milwaukee Ave Arts Fest . Failure by Unicycle Loves You
For this latest installment of the Recent Releases We Almost Missed series, Vol. 20!, we've been building for some time now a collection of notable releases in 2012 that we didn't initially feature, for one reason or another, in the Best New Releases series (the priority because of its popularity) when the singles and the [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • The Chicago Reader has raised the ire of the Chicago hip-hop community with its recent cover story, " Scratch and Stitch ," about the relationship between Chicago rappers and the streetwear companies that release their music. The cover depicts local rapper ShowYouSuck with a circle over his face that reads: "Insert Chicago Rapper Here," which many including ShowYouSuck (AKA Clinton Sandifer) interpreted that [...]

Unicycle Loves You From:Chicago, United States Chicago's oddly monickered Unicycle Loves You are ostensibly a noise-pop band with the volume set at somewhere lower than middle. On the fizzing Wow Wave Cinema the trio emphasise the pop more than the noise while Mirror Mirror even dares to flirts with dream pop. Garbage Dump sounds like a uniquely American take on britpop, like they've borrowed a Supergrass album and wrapped it in the stars [...]
Sure, it's mid-April, but that doesn't mean it isn't still Halloween. At least, that's the vibe campy noise-wavers Unicycle Loves You are peddling in their video for "Garbage Dump." In it, the band and their closest ghouls get down during the most cray cray dance party on this side of Gary, Indiana. If you want in on the action, you can shimmy and shake with Unicycle Loves You when the band plays the Empty Bottle on Tuesday, April 24.

Jangling pop music certainly isn't a novel concept, but when done right there's still nothing that matches the sense of excitement and sheer joy that a quick guitar-driven pop song can bring. Enter Unicycle Loves You, the Jim Carroll lead band, on their third studio album, have finally managed to pull together that pop sensibility quite well. "Bitch Eye," taken from Failure , which came out in February on Mecca Lecca, is the quintessential example of what no-nonsense pop can mean. A track where the guitar never ceases, the vocals are distant but warm, and the shake of various [...]

In 2010, Unicycle Loves You stripped away the studio gloss of their self-titled 2008 debut and took a large step forward with the release of Mirror, Mirror. With frontman Jim Carroll in complete control of the recording process, the resulting record was one far more true to the band's vision, and more representative of their influences. Once again handling the roles of songwriter and producer, Carroll has dug even further into his Sebadoh/Guided By Voices-influenced home-recording roots for Unicycle Loves You's latest record, Failure . Loaded [...]
When not visiting the Church of Bob Pollard, Unicycle Loves You's Jim Carroll takes pleasure in rewriting the garage-pop rulebook, conquering SXSW, and releasing his band's best album to date. Now, he tells PopMatters all about it. Unicycle Loves You remains a bit of a pop-rock enigma. For starters, the band started out as a project of just one person alone: singer/songwriter Jim Carroll. Ever since moving to Chicago in 2005 (a transplant from Poughkeepsie, NY), Carroll has been slowly carving out his niche as one of the foremost garage-pop songwriters of his day. Raised on a [...]
