Yesterday was St Andrews Day. Yesterday i was too busy getting drunk to do this post. Today i'm too hungover to make a serious attempt at one and do it justice so instead i'll just post some random stuff. Some really good Scottish music of all varieties and sounds will do for a start. Some famous ones, some semi famous ones, some lesser known ones..... MP3: Frightened Rabbit - The Loneliness MP3: The Beta [...]

Tomorrow marks the release of the tenth anniversary edition of the classic Queens of the Stone Age album "Rated R". One of my favourite albums of all time by one of my favourite bands of all time. The album contains references to drugs throughout, no more so than in the opening track "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" where the only lyrics are "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol" before a chorus solely made up of the word "Cocaine" comes in. Messy, wonderfully loose and instantly ear catching. The rest of the album follows suit and makes for an [...]

I'm not sure if this has been officially announced, but it looks as if the Mill is coming to an end. Craig from Union of Knives seems to have let the cat out the proverbial bag on his blog . "so. we're playing a gig in oran mor which i mentioned. it's for a night called 'the mill', by miller beer and the good and great among glasgow music marketing and in fact i am sad to say that it will be the last ever 'mill'. i'm glad we finally [...]

Indie-electro trio Union of Knives this week revealed that they had split up, and with the announcement came the now obligatory goodbye statement. Sometimes a band's last words are witty, more often they're as bitter as a lemon marinated in vinegar. We've compiled a dozen of the best break-up speeches by Scottish groups, starting with the most recent. Will the last to leave please switch off the lights? UNION OF KNIVES (January 2010) Craig Grant (singer): [...]
Sadly it looks like Union of Knives as we once knew them are no more, In what sounds like a very similar scenario to singer Chris Gordon's previous band Baby Chaos, their record label has fucked them over. Chris, Bobby and Dave will no longer be playing live with the band anymore, although Dave and Chris will continue to work with the band. The band posted this blog on their myspace which explains what happened and what we can expect to hear from them in future, still shite though. [...]

In a first, this post goes out my mate Jamie who broke his wrist playing 5's last night, here's my top ten dedication to your pain, just for you Jambo! 1. Baby Chaos - She's in Pain 2. Ross Clark - Broken Boy 3. Beta Band - Broke 4. Meursault - Nothing Broke 5. Sparklehorse - Pain 6. De Rosa - It helps to see you hurt 7. Herman Dune - If It Ain't Broken [...]

The following mash-up was brought to my attention, and i felt i have to share it with the world at large. It is a mash-up of the classic Underworld Song , "Born Slippy", and "We Are All Doing Drugs" by UK newcomers Union of Knives . I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big fan of mash-ups, but this one is sticking on me, and hopefully it will stick on you. Enjoy! [...]

Following their debut 'Violence & Birdsong', Union of Knives are back with their funky electro breaks. 'We Are All Doing Drugs' is the first single since the debut and the Glaswegians are on top form as they provide a smasher with spooky synth and bleak basslines. Their somewhat dub-rcok-synth-skank is wretched and beautiful at the same time. Working on their new album 'The Anti-Fire' with Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails due out later this year, this band are one to watch in the coming months. Speaking on the title of their [...]

Union of Knives is back with a new track "We Are All Doing Drugs." The Scottish band received considerable praise for their debut album, Violence & Birdsong . The group is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album with the help of NIN collaborator Atticus Ross. Glasgow, Scotland indie group Union of Knives is back with a new album and a new single. "Doing Drugs" is a roaring and soaring new single that shows off an edgier sound that is probably in part to them working with Atticus Ross who has collaborated with Trent Reznor on many NIN albums as well as his own work. Union of Knives is the second band to turn to NIN personnel to produce their albums after Ladytron recruited NIN keyboardist Alessandreo Cortini to produce their 2008 album "Velocifero". [...]

~ Hollywood, Mon Amour Feat. Juliette Lewis - "This Is Not America" ~ Similar to Nouvelle Vague's take on classic 80s songs, Hollywood, Mon Amour breathes fresh life into this David Bowie song and turns it into a smooth, almost ambient ballad that sounds as old as it does new. ~ My Teenage Stride - "Theme From Teenage Suicide" ~ Indie pop with a late 70s/early 80s streak. Fun and kind of morbid at the same time thanks to these lyrical gems: "I'm a killer but I never started [...]

What is it, Remix-Tuesday at Marvellous Mansions?; seems slightly that way, although this time it's an original & mix of a much more recent tune by Union Of Knives , who I hadn't heard of until a few days ago. UOK come from Glasgow, and make some excellent electro/Indie sounds. There are six newish tracks on their myspace, of which Doing Drugs is my favourite... not that the others aren't very good too; have a listen yourself. Play very loud for best results - this is mighty fine. ♫ We Are All [...]

This is my super most favorite image to use when I get behind on posts. Pretty much speaks for itself, no? As much as it pains me to not devote full posts to those who willingly submit their music for review, in order to bring you the best and brightest in a [somewhat] timely fashion, please enjoy this lengthy post of many many quality tracks, with a bit of my ramblings in betwixt. The images in the box below obvs coincide with the links in numbered fashion as [...]

Here's some exciting new music i've discovered lately. What do you think? First up from Portland, Oregon come Hockey . This foursome has made quite an impression in a pretty short time, and as such have received a fair amount of support and attention from the big wigs. They have been described as " purveyors of disco/funk " and i'd pretty much go along with that. Their songs do invoke a certain feeling in me to break out into full blown body movement, not something [...]

art: jmarshall.lively You may well remember Glasgow based Union of Knives from their 2006 album Violence & Birdsong, which contained one of my favourite songs of that year, Evil Has Never . Their sound? Uhm, how about this: Thom Yorke replaces Ben Gibbard in The Postal Service, gets dumped by his girlfriend, develops a rather unpleasant prescription drug habit and gets into bad fights with Jimmy Tamborello . Great music ensues. [...]

The music is flowing fast and furious into the old inbox, folks, and I cannot possibly keep up. Here are a few things that I've received in recent weeks (months? I am so far behind) that I think you will enjoy. Fiction Family -- "When She's Near" mp3 off Fiction Family ( buy ) I LOVE this. I put it on a mix-tape and every time I hear it I think, oooh, I want to hear that again. [...]
