Photography by gabriele chiapparini A lot of thanks to our Senior VIP/VP Fulltext for turning my sights toward this gem... I love me some bluegrass, I really do. I remember back in Tampa during my effervescent young adulthood, living in my garage-converted-to-an apartment (it was underneath the garage apartment, ceilings about 6'3", I'm 6'1") with my bicycle and moped down in the Hyde Park area, playing chef at the local 4 star hotel, where every Tuesday, I think, the local community radiostation, [...]
Here, for no apparent reason, is a collection of bands named after places. Architecture in Helsinki I never knew the city was renowned for its flair for buildings. I guess it's catchier than Architecture in Slough. Beirut A New Mexican who named his group after a Lebanese city and plays eastern European, French and Mexican-influenced folk. Somebody has identity issues. [...]
The Horseshoe was near-empty when we arrived around 8pm. A screen on the side of the stage was showing a quirky music video seemingly unrelated to the events coming up but was successful at getting people out of their chairs and onto the floor. 9pm rolled around and the first act, Spookey Ruben, took the stage. Spookey Ruben was ... not so spooky. He supposedly got his name during his teenage metalhead days but those days are evidently long gone. Spookey Ruben was nothing short of adorable. His buttery-smooth, sometimes-falsetto voice sang indie pop tunes of humour, unrequited [...]

web site || buy from zunior The United Steel Workers of Montreal will kick your ass. I'm not really sure what else needs to be said about the urban hillbillies from Montreal, but seriously, one listen to their new record – Three on the Tree – will leave you battered and bruised and emotionally spent. I could start with the basics; banjo, squeezebox, guitar, and double bass that make you want to stomp a hole in the dance floor or talk about Gern 's gruff, whiskey sloshed [...]

Die Roten Punkte This week, Thunderheist and Shad top a series of FREE weekend shows in Toronto; the Rhubarb and Weesageechak Festival s open at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille, respectively; Ruby Coast and Winter Gloves headline a rock solid night of indie music at the Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday; Bad Dog Theatre's Globehead Tournament ramps up to the finals [...]

web site :: label :: buy from Zunior After taking forever and a day to get the Alberta mix up and running for our Great Canadian Mixtape project, we are trying to be a bit more proactive with the Quebec-edish. Although we are going to scatter the whole province, Montreal is generally regarded as the epi-centre of Canadian indie music, so I'd wager we're going to have a proverbial ton of Moe-re-al bands to choose from. Already, one I guarantee will the final cut is The United [...]
Montreal Bands at SXSW 2008 Pt1 From the Arcade Fire to Chromeo, Montreal is synonymous with diverse eclectic music scene. Come SXSW 2008 in Austin, Texas eyes will be on the fresh blood from what many are billing as the New New York. Haven't heard of Peer Pressure or Skratch Bastid? Don't worry the monkey is only [...]

Hard to believe this Mandolin Week is over. I had a lot of mando-music to share that didn't fall into any other weekly features. So I'll feature them here, today, in a random sort of way. United Steel Workers Of Montreal ∞ Wandering Eye Barbara Cohen ∞ Amazing Grace Largo ∞ Gimmie A Stone John Hiatt ∞ Cry Love Hellogoodbye ∞ Oh, It Is Love [...]

And others dead, I, being neither, have a job instead. Nothing like a spot of Larkin to see you through miserable January workdays. Whilst we're all readjusting to the daily grind and trying to shake off our professional ennui, let's take heart from a few fellow working types. And each other, of course. Listen: United Steel Workers of Montreal - Ask Me To Stay Listen: Sufjan Stevens - To the Workers of the Rockford Listen: Dolly - Daddy's Working Boots Listen: Hawksley Workman [...]

What a neat little cd. I'll bet, if you did not know, you could listen to this cd a dozen times and not realize that there are no drums. USWoM is a string band with an accordion. I know that could be read as "a bluegrass band with an accordion player", but that seriously is not the case. They've labeled themselves "city grass", and as they sound more dive-bar than blue and more country/blues than grass, I think it is a label that fits them just fine. Their newest cd, Kerosene and Coal, was released in May of [...]
