Psychedelic garage rockers Unkown Mortal Orchestra just released a cover of Otis Redding's "(Sittin on) The Dock of the Bay", right before they kick off their U.S. tour this week in Washington. The band recorded the cover (complete with some great whistling) live on BBC 6Music, and they're set to return to Philly's First Unitarian Church on October 9th, promoting their sophomore album, II . With the kickoff of their upcoming run of US tour dates imminent, Unknown Mortal Orchestra is back today to share their take on Otis Redding's '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay'. Unknown Mortal Orchestra has such a great sound. Their guitar, bass and drums belt out with a warm, fuzzy sheen, and it translates oh so well to Otis Redding's famous song "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." It's got such a mellow texture to it, coupled with a subtle sense of desperation. Damn, this cover is good. Stream the recording of UMO performing the cover live in studio for BBC Radio 6.

Following in the wake of their reunion-EP-of-sorts Songs for Slim , which benefited guitarist Slim Dunlap's recovery from a stroke, The Replacements have announced they will be performing together again as The Replacements for the first time since 19912s infamous "It Ain't Over 'Til The Fat Roadie Plays" show. The band will perform at Riot Fest in Chicago and go on to play two additional shows in Toronto and in Denver this summer. The lo-fi fuzz balls known as Unknown Mortal Orchestra are getting all nostalgic over everything with their latest release: a cover of Otis Redding's seminal "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay." The track, recorded live on BBC6 Music with Marc Riley , is more faithful than I was anticipating it to be; it's got that languid beat, the sultry vocals, and shimmering guitar you loved from the original. The breakdown does let a little of the distortion of the guitar clang out, before they rein it in and close it out in style. Unknown Mortal Orchestra is in the midst of heavy touring around the world in support of one this year's best albums, II, out on Jagjaguwar . Last month, the band made and appearance on Live on BBC 6Music with Marc Riley and performed a cover of the Otis Redding classic "Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." The cover makes complete sense given the depth of inspiration from soul on the album from the 60s and 70s. This interpretation is pretty true to the original. Check it out below.

We actually think it makes great sense that Unknown Mortal Orchestra would choose Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" to cover during their BBC 6 Music live session - the band deliver their best material when they smartly update the structures of classic soul and R&B with a little distorted, psychedelic energy. Dudes also know how to perfectly summon a nostalgic, sun-crisped feeling that we think would definitely make Otis proud, and that whistled line at the end is totally charming. Check it out. [...]

Back in April, Unknown Mortal Orchestra delivered a spot-on cover of Lindstrøm’s 2012 single "Rà-àkõ-st". Now, they're trying their hands at something a bit more intimidating: Otis Redding's classic "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" . A criticism only infrequently levelled at Ruban Nielson's Unknown Mortal Orchestra is that for all the style and panache the Portland-based troupe employ when reviving a smoky '60s aesthetic, only rarely do they realise their full potential. The eponymous début featured a few instances here and there (Ffunny Ffrends and How Can U Luv Me continue to stand out as seemingly indelible exemplars) while the considerably more contemporary follow-up,  II , carried with it a more or less equivalent quota of aural gold with the sassy  So Good At Being In Trouble [...]

If you haven't given UMO a shot for whatever reason, "Swim and Sleep (Like A Shark)" is easily one of the songs of the year. The album isn't as consistent as I would like, but that's one hell of a song.
