Had a somewhat bad start into this day; first my computer at work wouldn't start up, then people came nagging about unimportant things, phone started ringing with more nagging people on the line... and that all was within the first hour and before my first coffee! I hate those days... So I was in desperate need for some mellow music to bring me down again, and I found it in Glaswegians Fram , another band I've discovered via MusicOHM 's brilliant [...]
As it would happen, the stars are not aligned for me to catch a wonderful show this weekend. Between a poker tournament and the Dodgers (hopefully) beating the Mets this Saturday, I am over booked to catch the Hinkley and Schooner show at the Spy Bar here in Rochester. Schooner prolongs the great Chapel Hill scene with some noisy indie rock that I, and I can imagine many others, could get behind. The band reminds me of the Magnetic Fields with a tinge of Americana, but with just [...]

As we are approaching the 40th anniversary of the LSD ban in October 1966, here is a fair and balanced look at acid, as seen through the eyes of popular culture. Wendell Austin and The Country Swings - LSD (MP3): The drug of choice for country singers has always been alcohol (with the notable exception of Willie Nelson ), so it is no surprise that acid did not appeal to Wendell at all. Acid, The Story of LSD (MP3): Taken from the soundtrack of an educational (supposedly [...]

Here's an unknown Japanese combo doing a medley of Queen's greatest hits. I did my best to edit this together from the video snippets that appeared on this page , but there are inexplicable gaps and abrupt transitions. No matter: there are far too many syllables in the Japanese translations of Bohemian Rhapsody and Bicycle Race , and that's what really counts: download MP3
So, what the hell is going on with me lately? Updates have been sporadic, I know. I've been a bit overwhelmed the past few weeks for a number of reasons, most of them related to my real job. I really don't anticipate things slowing down at all, but I'm going to just muddle through. Since I'm so behind it's ridiculous, I decided that rather than spend hours and hours trying to catch up, I'd start out by posting a little mix of some great stuff that's found its way into my inbox in the [...]

I just had a little messenger conversation with a friend of mine. We were talking about the AMUSEMENT PARKS ON FIRE show tonight in Cologne and about that topic we started to talk about shoegazing and shared some new music links. I remebered that I hazardly discovered SHE, SIR yesterday and so I sent him the link to their webpage. What you have to know about my friend before I'll write on is the fact that he's an expert in gazing his sneaker. He knows everything about bands like SLOWDIVE or RIDE and so I was a [...]
Pete Townshend - We Won't Get Fooled Again (Live) This is the B-side to 'Face The Face' a relatively boring Pete Townshend solo track. What's really cool is that this live version features David Gilmour on guitars, making this his second guest appearance at The Lost Turntable in one week. Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (Live) The band with the best hair of all time - that's all I gotta say. The Sugarcubes - Motorcrash (Live) I wonder what happened to that annoying [...]

Had a great weekend! I've crossed a 60 meter deep and 350 meter wide gorge tied to a cable, went rowing down a river in a zodiac, did some serious clay pigeons shooting, and yes... I've had a few beers! Life can be fun! :) Back to music now: In my last post, I've mentioned Mew on AOL's interface. Here's the official link to that thingie: click .There's the songs, interviews, pictures, a podcast and much more. Check it out if [...]

San Francisco, CA Halou is an excellent electronic rock trio from San Francisco. Wholeness and Separation is the band’s third album, and it unites gorgeous strings with alluring beats. In addition to their own project, members of Halou recently helped out DJ Shadow with mixing and engineering his latest studio album The Outsider . I easily recommend Halou if you like artists like Lamb . "Stonefruit" [...]

[ 5 MP3 files by two volcanoes, a Geiger counter, a web server, and an Italian scientist in this post. ] What do volcanoes do when they are not busy erupting? Researchers from Italy and Ecuador have recently discovered that these huge buggers are really composing music, much in the vein of Iannis Xenakis . Honestly, these scientists are just tired of looking at numbers and graphs all the time, so they turned seismographic patterns into musical scores and then play them using a cheap MIDI interpreter. There are two volcanoes to compare [...]

Theres a theme to tonights posts - all the groups could be classed as new psychedelia or psychedelica. First up: The Acid Fascists The brilliantly named Acid Fascists are unsigned and that can only be because the music industry has not yet appreciated that psychedelica is the coming music trend. If you don't believe me then take a (virtual) trip to theUSA and listen to The UpsideDown & The Black Angels or [...]
The Monroes - What do all the people know? I was bored at home the other day, waiting for my drug dealer to call me back and I decided to make the best playlist of all time on my iTunes. I called it "Sexy Party Time" and labored meticulously to include all of my favorite get-ready songs. The playlist includes some RuPaul, En Vogue, a lot of Madonna, FANCY, Abba, Sugarcubes remixes, and it's basically hot tracks galore. While rifling through the the songs like clothes on a rack, I remembered The Monroes. They were this [...]

The other day when I was writing about Nick Luca I came across a compilation put out by his label called Graciousely . The proceeds of the disc go to help those musicians affected by Hurrican Katrina. There are unreleased songs by Calexico, Devotchka, Steve Wynn and Robyn Hitchcock and many more. I went for the Howe Gelb and Scout Niblett duet but you might go for something else entirely. The disc is available now on the Funzalo Records website here or through Amazon here . [...]
It's late notice, yes. But it's worth it. Maria de Barros is performing tonight at Town Hall Seattle , and I just found out that a Cape Verde cultural organization is giving away 130 free tickets for youth age 18 and under. You can find the details about the show and the giveaway here (click "events"), along with some Cape Verdean music samples from Cesaria Evora , Maria de Barros , Lura , Maria Alice , Suzanna Lubranno , Tito Paris , and Mindel Band . Night City was like a deranged experiment in social Darwinism, designed by a bored researcher who kept on thumb permanently on the fast-forward button. - William Gibson , Neuromancer, pp.7 An after hour electronica list, it's mostly exploration filled with recent releases. Overall the list is useable, surprisingly, a break from harsh up tempo post punk. It could work as a saturday post activities soundtrack. "Do you have horrible secret about yourself that you don't talk about at parties? [...]

Soul Asylum The Silver Lining Label: Sony In stores: July 11, 2006 Those who only know Minneapolis' Soul Asylum for their 1993 Grammy winning track “Runaway Train," probably won't know or care about the group's eight albums prior to The Silver Lining -- the group's forthcoming ninth full-length album and first studio release since Candy from a Stranger (1998). Those of us who've been following the group for two decades are thrilled for new content, still mourning the [...]

If only he would, if only. Richard Hawley releases a new single today ("Cole's Corner"). Irregardless of that however, I'm just a massive fan, so any excuse to post an MP3. Here's a non-album MP3 taken from his official website: Darlin'
