Underground label Unthank have produced some of the most excellent twisted house EP's in the last 2 years. They come as limited 103 vinyl presses with special artwork. A real collectors piece, which is what you would expect as an offshoot from the excellent Firecracker collective. The EP oozes class as Australian producer Inkswel brings elements of house, beats and latin flavours provided by Chico Mann before getting down right dirty as Funkineven works his acid magic. I'll be front and centre when this baby drops.

One of the most fruitful weeks yet this year for new music releases. We're proud to feature Philadelphia's own Dr. Dog whose Be The Void is out today. We're quite excited about this album, not only because they're from Philly, but their last effort Shame Shame featured some great tracks such as "Jackie Wants A Black Eye" and "Where'd All The Time Go". Lots more to get to this week including The Twilight Sad with their creepy-titled No One Can [...]
As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [ Pt. 1 / Pt. 2 ], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though we watch the other coverbloggers carefully throughout the year, we are folkies first and foremost here at Cover Lay Down. And - as we noted atop our year's end mix - some of the [...]
So this is it. Our favourite album of the year is Last by Northumbrian folk group The Unthanks . It's an album that sadly hasn't cropped up on many end of year lists, yet by quite some way Last is the recording that we've been most affected by in 2012. Last is certainly not an album you'd put on at a party. Its sparse arrangements, constructed out of intense piano and haunting strings, accompanied by the [...]
When it comes to end of year best of lists there are certain albums that will be so ubiquitous that cynics will begin to challenge the idea that every pundit, journalist and music fan who produces such a list could actually like that album. Surely not everyone thinks the same? Or is it a case that certain more prominent lists influence other lists - to not feature particular critically acclaimed albums would be seen by some as not being on-the-case-enough? When those lists are produced [...]
"They could sing the songs of Las Ketchup and make them sound impossibly sad and beautiful," someone once said of The Unthanks . I couldn't agree more. The Unthanks play folk music. Not the sort of rousing, chest-thumping, arena filling folk music that the likes of Mumford & Sons play, nor the whisky punched stomp of the likes of The Pogues from the 1980's. No, The Unthanks play downbeat, mournful, utterly bewitching traditional folk music, much of it handed down from [...]
There are 2 major music festivals on the Isle of Wight. The first, is referred to by locals or 'caulkheads' as they are sometimes known as simply 'The Festival.' The second as 'The Bestival.' There's a big observational hint in the names as to which one is superior. Exciting, eclectic, eccentric, Bestival (to give it its proper name - there is no 'The') is undoubtedly Breaking More Waves favourite festival in the UK. Rob Da Bank's crazy village fete / rave / gig on the [...]

The Unthanks: The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnsons
The Unthanks personify the connections and contradictions of what it means to be an outsider because of one's sexuality, political radicalism, or just being sensitive soul in a hard, hard world. The English folk revival band the Unthanks have been known to do odd covers in the past, such as an acoustic version of King Crimson's heavy metal fusion track "Starless", but their latest release is even a greater departure from their rustic roots. For their new record, the Unthanks played two concerts in December 2010 at London's Union Chapel devoted to two very different artists: Antony Hegarty (of [...]
Album Review: The Unthanks – Diversions Vol 1: The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony and the Johnsons
Antony Hegarty possesses one of the most incredible voices in recent decades, so taking on Antony and the Johnsons' songs is no small task. The same can be said of Robert Wyatt, whose songs are steeped in the whimsical tradition associated with the mid-'60s British Canterbury scene. Thus, when The Unthanks , led by sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, announced their intention to cover songs by both, and to do it live no less, critics' ears perked up. They've spoken about Diversions Vol 1: The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony and the Johnsons (the first in [...]

The Unthanks - You are my sister
Life bumbles along, and months of not being able to listen to music come to an end, wrapped in the cashmere warmth of Mark Eitzel, the Unthanks and Hem. Here the Unthanks make good on their last album, complete with lovely spoken interludes. This is my most listened to album this year already. Taken from the live album "Diversions, Vol. 1: The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnsons- Live from the Union Chapel, London", recorded at the end of last year whilst waiting to finish their new album it shows them to be as expert at taking [...]

The Unthanks - Blue Bleezin' Blind Drunk
I am growing slowly ever more obsessed with this performance of Blue Bleezin' Blind Drunk . You may be familiar with it from the album The Bairns , but this is a live performance of the song recorded in a pub in Sydney. Very au naturel, you can even hear a car go past at one point. Doesn't matter. Like the badly-tuned piano, it all adds to the atmosphere. This an old northern folk song about domestic violence. It starts off with Becky Unthank, her throat full of hail and melancholy, setting [...]

The Unthanks bring Robert Wyatt / Antony show to Dublin
In December 2010 The Unthanks played two nights at the Union Chapel in London, exploring the music by Antony & The Johnsons and Robert Wyatt. The shows were captured on a live album which will be available later this year, and to mark the release, The Unthanks will take their Robert/Antony show on a short tour of UK and Ireland dates, previously only seen in London. The special pre-Christmas concerts will feature a set of Robert Wyatt music and a set of Antony & The Johnsons songs, either side of an interval, exploring two of the most adventurous [...]
