A lot of times when I run I listen to full albums. I try to choose albums I know well so I can sing along in my head and pay less attention to the fact that I'm (usually) bored shirtless. I rarely compile elaborate mixes of songs intended to spur speed bursts or keep a [...]
Beeps at short intervals. A voice message or two. This is how I am stirred from slumber on Sunday morning. It's not as lilting and pretty as the Velvet Underground & Nico tune of same name. It's an abrasive, too loud siren that bores its way into your skull like a drill commanding you to [...]
Unwound West Indian Social Club Hartford, CT 4/7/95 The overall feeling I get from this Unwound recording is that it was a "paying your dues" type of show, opening for Fugazi . This short set was played to what sounds like a very unappreciative crowd who were more interested in Ian and co. bringing the rock than a more-mellow-than-average Unwound set. The recording volume fluctuates greatly, but check out the early version of Next Exit with completely different lyrics. Track listing: 1. Demolished [...]
It takes cojones to put two drastically different albums together at once, even more cojones to organize the contributions of two-dozen collaborators. In the case of R. Loren, whose two new projects Sailors with Wax Wings and White Moth were both released in October on Angel Oven Records, we're not talking 24 random kids from [...]
Earlier this fall we were treated to Twin Shadow, the solo project of Brooklyn-based George Lewis, Jr. His adoration for post-punk was no secret, with a post-punk arsenal of rhythmic reverb that beautifully complemented Lewis' deep and somber voice – which naturally fell somewhere between Morrissey and Ian McCulloch. Barring some more lighthearted moments like [...]

Ponga play y disfrute.

Unwound - Laugh Track Thekla Olympia, WA 4/1/02 I missed my last opportunity to see Unwound when they played at All Tomorrow's Parties here in Los Angeles. I figured instead of seeing them play a huge venue/festival, I would catch them next time. Unfortunately there was never a "next time" as they broke up a few months later. Today's post is a video from Unwound's final performance back in 2002. A friend and fellow Unwound fanatic flew up to Olympia and filmed their final performance. Download: [...]

The Corin Tucker Band features Ms. Corin Tucker of the indefinitely hiatused Sleater-Kinney , as well as Seth Lorinczi of Golden Bears and Sara Lund formerly of Unwound . Their yet-to-be-released album is entitled 1,000 Years . This track is reportedly more rocking than the rest of the album, so get excited but don't expect the rest to this heavy, ok? Listen. Downloadable: Doubt (mp3) (source: LHB ) In other Sleater-Kinney news, Carrie is putting the Monitor Mix blog on hold while she works on [...]

Unwound Backstage, Capitol Theater Olympia, WA 5/4/95 This Unwound set was recorded nearly 15 years ago to the day. One thing to note about this recording is that there's a couple of tracks from "Repetition" tracks played live. That record wasn't released for nearly a year after this date, so it very could have been their "debut." It's not the best recording, but it's a great track selection. Setlist: 1. Intro 2. All Souls Day 3. Dragnalus 4. Equally Stupid 5. Petals Like [...]
Unwound - "Corpse Pose" MP3/download Awww hell, here's another song, another day. Who knows what's going on at Gumshoe HQ; I sure don't. Unwound rule, though, that's all I know for sure. Filed under: Unwound Tagged: daily mp3, pacific northwest indie-rock, Unwound - "Corpse Pose" MP3/download

Corinne Tucker, my favorite voice from Sleater-Kinney, is set to release her solo debut this October, which she has unfortunately described as "a middle-aged mom record." Yikes. Not a good way to get the momentum going. Conversely, she has employed Unwound's Sara Lund on drums, which definitely perks my ears back up. Fleshing out the line-up is Seth Lorinczi of Golden Bears, whose studio, Little Golden Books, Tucker used to record the album up in Portland, Oregon. Tucker cites The Slits, The Raincoats, The English Beat, and Sinead O'Connor as influences for her first-ever solo effort. Tucker has [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars The burgeoning music scene in Denton, Tx has long been known for releasing quality music; Tre Orsi is apparently going to be another one of those bands. Recently, they've gotten some press for their appearance on Casual Victim Pile compilation by Matador, but Devices + Emblems gives the group a more definititve sound. From the onset of this album you can tell that there is a brooding sense of [...]
