Happy Game Of Thrones Sunday! Happy Cinco de Mayo! As of today, I've officially been a resident of the city of Los Angeles for 6 years. Although not technically, because I still don't have a CA driver's license. Oh well. Someday. Cheers to transience! RULES for uninitiated noobs: I give birth to a weekly Mix [...]
Welcome to Backtrack, Sam Hockley-Smith’s new Stereogum column dedicated to a remembrance of great things past, of important records situated in the middle ground between Legendary Reissue Status and yesterday’s news. Backtrack will unfold as a crate-digger’s journey [or: in relation to itself], drawing connections to previous stops, celebrating artists’ seminal platters. It’s borne out of love for the unrivaled power of the album format, and what happens when we think about great ones. We began with the Microphones’ new millennial classic The Glow Pt. 2 and continued to its fellow K Records-release [...]
The origins of The Cargo Culte lay in a collection of mixes that BaddBob and I began sharing in the late fall and winter of 2008. A few scant months after the banking meltdown I found myself back in Los Angeles after eight years of wandering, living off of unemployment. BaddBob a behind the scenes [...]

It's time to check out a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. Listen. Downloadables: Space Cadet (mp3) by Paint Fumes We Act (mp3) by bennio qwerty [d/l EP @ bennioqwerty.bandcamp.com ] V.Card (Demo) [...]

Don’t enter the garage without your Survival Knife. Made up of members of Unwound, Blue Druid and Western Hymn is the new project Survival Knife. The band’s blend of hardcore and garage rock...

When the sound board recording of Survival Knife's first show appeared last March, forums and blogs exploded with links and opinions about Unwound's Justin Trosper's return to music. And I was one of them, scrambling for my copy like a giddy schoolkid. The band consists of two of Unwound's original members, drummer Brandt Sandeno and, of course, guitarist/vocalist Trosper. Sandeno has switched to guitar but Trosper's style is hard to disguise, even with a new rhythm section backing him. This is a good thing. Survival Knife may eschew some of Unwound's noisier tangents, but the riffs are unmistakably [...]

With that live LP finally in the rearview , Unwound can now get on the stick with respect to reissues. Enter the newly announced remastering of the post-hardcore crew's complete recordings, which will feature their seven LPs along with a gang of expanded/bonus content. Numero will also drop the previously unavailable Big Baby LP from Giant Henry , the high school project of members Justin Trosper and Vern Rumsey that evolved into Unwound. Stream a newly-unearthed Giant Henry song, "Super Nova," below. That record will drop in time for Record Store Day [...]

Tumwater, WA’s Unwound is one of the defining bands in the great big ‘90s indie-rock trip. One of the many compliments that can be paid to the trio is that their final album Leaves Turn Inside You was also their best. More than a decade has passed since that record appeared, and the group has just released an intriguing 2LP Live Leaves , a set that details the 2001 tour that directly preceded their breakup. While definitely one for the fans, it still contains qualities that help it to stand apart from the large mass [...]

I hope you're all relaxing and enjoying this Sunday evening. I on the other hand am completely exhausted. Two Christmas parties last night on opposite sides of town and late-night drinking escapades handicapped my workday. Now here I sit, trying to put together a mix tape for you when really all I want to do [...]

Going to Unwound shows was a once-a-year given/religious experience for me between the years 1994 and 1998. I saw the band every single time it came within 600 miles of wherever I was. Sometimes multiple times. To say that I was a fan is a gross understatement. Back then bands released records every year and then toured relentlessly. The lag now averages about two to three years between releases for most stable bands, which just seems ridiculous, especially when you think back to James Brown's day. That guy would release so many albums in a year his record company could barely [...]
Sara Lund is undoubtedly one of the best drummers in the Pacific Northwest - and has been for as long as some of you have been alive. Her steadily adventurous drumming built a solid foundation for Unwound throughout the '90s and early '00s. Now she plays with both the Corin Tucker Band and Hungry Ghost . On the cusp of Unwound releasing a live LP - the first new release from the band in years –- Sara stopped by Turntable.fm to talk about Unwound, Olympia in the '90s, and what a Skrillex is. [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let’s get weird. Photo by Studio Muscle Words by Chris When you think of this genre, and the dramatic crescendos and/or post-apocalyptic fury that comes with it, certain bands come to mind- Mogwai , Tortoise , Sigur Rós , Silver Mt. What if all the stories about Chupacabras coming out of Puerto Rico were not, in fact, sightings of a weird blood-sucking goat creature, but a real-life vampire! That's not quite the position the author of a recent article posted at Mysterious Universe takes, but since I have barely any journalistic scruples, I have no problem [...]
Happy birthday, sister. You never read my website so this message for you will most likely never be seen. Still, that shouldn't deter me from wishing you well. You're thirty years old now. Your life is pretty much over. Don't feel too bad, I'll be there in another 13 months. It's pretty weird to think [...]
