In a little less then the month you are going to be bombarded by an album called Dissolver from a band called Iran. People will try and tell you that this band is a side project of TV On the Radio's because it includes Kyp Malone in the band and because Dave Sitek twiddled the knobs. All of this sort of makes sense, but if you delve a little deeper you will learn that Iran pre-dates TV On the Radio and that the band have already released two excellent albums that sound nothing like Dissolver . This [...]

Up The Empire has been laying low for a while now. It's been more than ten months since they played a show, but they're back tonight, playing at Mercury Lounge - a release party for their new EP that just came out yesterday. The EP is called Loose Ends and features four songs that capture the big, energetic sound we've come to expect and enjoy from them. The production work is topnotch and, of course, the cover of Dinosaur Jr's "Feel The Pain" is a nice surprise, but it's [...]
Monday: Shy Child, Free Blood, Pwrfl Power @ Santo's Party House 8pm $10 All three bands have been buzzed about to no end, but what you may not have heard amongst all the hyperbole surrounding these bands is that they all can play and they are all actually worthy of your attention. This is a three headed bill the likes of which we rarely see on a Monday night. Shy Child - "Summer" Free Blood - "Quick and Painful" Pwrfl Power - "Alma Song" [...]

The hard copies of our new EP, Loose Ends, just arrived in the mail! The record is officially out on DEC 16th (with digital versions somewhat secretly available right now). You'll be able to get your hands on a copy in person at a big blow out party we're having at MERCURY LOUNGE on Wednesday, DEC. 17th with The Bon Savants and label mates Ford & Fitzroy (who, btw, just released their own record yesterday). You know you can't wait! I stumbled upon Up the Empire sometime in early '06 and [...]

Do you hear that? There's a little centro-matic, a little National, a little Dinosaur jr, and alot of goodness. 4 voice melodies, pulsing drums, plenty of noise-rocking, speed picking, fuzzboxing (no, that's not a word), fret scraping goodness and really catchy songs. This is Up the Empire: one of my favorite promos i have received in recent memory. The songs are just good catchy melodic indie rock songs, no gimmick, no namedropping, just good songs. We could all use a little bit of that right? The brooklynites? have a few shows coming up next month [...]

"People say that we sound like what would happen if Dinosaur Jr. kicked Queens of the Stone Age's ass and then went out back to party with Oneida and Deerhoof." That's how Up the Empire's Doug Keith describes his band's sound, and with a 'modest' description like that how can you not be intrigued. Though I fail to hear...well...any of the influences he mentions I have really dug everything I've heard thus far by the band. "Recover" tends to have all the hallmarks of a well-polished indie-rock band bordering [...]
