I saw a really good show last Wednesday at the Echo - Charles Bradley. Old guy can't dance, but he was willing to throw his 63 year old body into the crowd. Such a soulful voice. I also caught Blue Blood at the Satellite on Tuesday. They've only played four shows as a band, but are already impressive. Monday 5/9/11 [Pick of the Night] He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister / Sister Rogers / Sweaters / The Pleasure Circus @ The [...]

ARTIST: Urge Overkill - [Album] DATE: 05-05-11 REVIEW BY: Bill Adams As of 2010, it had been fifteen years since Urge Overkill last released a studio recording and, by then, the general consensus was that Chicago's most notorious alt-rock band was a creatively spent entity. They hadn't broken up and were still touring (one tour featured a stop at North By Northeast Music Conference in 2007), but [view more]

Frank Yang You're not wrong, it really had been forever since Low last headlined a show in Toronto - well over five years , to be exact. It may not have seemed that long, what with them having been here supporting Wilco at Massey Hall in July 2007 and Alan Sparhawk having brought his Retribution Gospel Choir through town a number of times in the interim, but yes. Low sightings in Toronto have been, well, low. The drought finally ended on Monday night at the Mod Club, [...]
By: Rinjo Njori After my "non-celebration" of the holiest day to an atheist Irishman I felt like I might as well nail myself into the coffin. So, check out Les Elite, Ocean Colour Scene, a new track from the Fleshtones and a long overdue and overlooked new track from Urge Overkill. Peace and Guiness! New Urge Overkill! sounds great. check it.
After the chaos of the last month, this week has been pretty slow. No new Radiohead albums (at least not yet), no White Stripes break ups, no Bonnaroo announcements, and plenty of Charlie Sheen winning. Whether you enjoy this change or not, we'd like to cap it all off with our weekly Friday Mixtape. This week's mix features a healthy splash of new music from the likes of Panda Bear, Boris, Sloan, and Toro y Moi. Plus, our partner site, Cover Me , threw in some fantastic reworkings of Radiohead, Prince, Gaga, Guided By Voices, and more. Check it [...]

Over 15 years since their last album, the two-headed rock ‘n roll behemoth that is Urge Overkill , will finally make its return. Their new album, Rock&Roll Submarine , is out May 10th on their own label UO Records . The band’s mixture of arena-ready hooks with punk rock ferocity is as potent as ever, as apparent on the rip-roaring new track, “Effigy.” As fans who crowded NYC’s Mercury Lounge this past October to witness the reunited group can attest, UO’s live...

Urge Overkill ... sure, why not. Fifty percent original ingredients (singer-guitarists Eddie “King” Roeser and Nash Kato). First album in 15 years ("Rock & Roll Submarine," due May 10). The reformed lineup is made up of original singer-guitarists/songwriters Eddie "King" Roeser and Nash Kato, along with drummer Bonn Quast (Polvo; The Cherry Valence) and bassist Hadji Hodgkiss (Gaza Strippers). Urge Overkill will be performing at [...]
With the unfortunate success of "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon", most people overlook that Urge Overkill were actually one hell of a great band in their day. There are precious few albums from the early '90s that hold up from beginning to end as well as Saturation. As previously reported, Urge have been back in the studio working on their first new album in 16 years. That album now has a name

Hollywood Palladium 5/7/11: Fleet Foxes (Friday at 10 AM) Gibson Amphitheatre 4/30/11: Invasion Del Corrido (Friday at 1:00 PM) The Wiltern 4/9/11: Kevin Smith (Friday at 10 AM) The Music Box 3/29/11: OMD / Oh Land (now) 5/21/11: Yelle / French Horn Rebellion (now) 6/1/11: Architecture in Helsinki / Hooray for Earth (now) [...]
And You'll Say Urge Overkill Exit the Dragon Comments: This was a great album and this song advanced UO as songwriters. Too bad this album got trashed back in the day. Make You Mine The Fondas Runaway Bombshell Comments: The Fondas craft great Detroit songs. There are 5 great songs on Runaway Bombshell. This is one of the great songs. Although the piano during the middle of the song is really annoying. Luckily someone only got to play with it for 30 seconds. Childs Death. [...]

Whoo hoo! Urge Overkill finally got it together in the studio over the last year or so to finish recording a new effort, to be called "Rock & Roll Submarine" and come out officially in late April. Nash and Ed wrote on the band's site: "A Message from Nash Kato and King Roeser: Urge Overkill are pleased to formally announce our long-awaited return from the depths of studio silence with a brand new offering: all aboard the Rock&Roll Submarine! We are thrilled that this seaman's dozen o'fresh tracks reflect our time-tested [...]

Republicans are taking over the U.S. House and gaining in the Senate. It's no wonder. Exit polls are showing Americans are fearful in a terrible economy. Unemployment still stands at almost 10 percent. That means close to 15 million people are out of work (and that's just the folks who are counted). A CNN analysis shows that most voters are deciding against an incumbent rather than endorsing a candidate. That's too bad. For decades, rockers lampooned politicians and their insincerity. A couple of songs that spring to mind every election are Urge Overkill's [...]
(photo by Jeff Millies) Chicago alternative rock outfit Urge Overkill are releasing a new record after about fifteen years of relative inactivity. The band have been unfortunately stuck in the bargain bins of music shops and only really having the calling card of covering Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" in "Pulp Fiction" [...]
