>> We were excited to hear from Mike Quinn , who in the prior decade fronted erstwhile Scranton, PA-based indie rock champions Okay Paddy . That band's 2006 set The Cactus Has A Point [ review here ] was one of our favorite records of 2006 . Around the time Okay Paddy hung up its gloves for the last time, Quinn moved on to the more trad-leaning folk/vaudeville/bluegrass concern ...And The Moneynotes , which put out a couple nifty, sometimes wacky, releases including New Cornucopia! , which we reviewed here [...]

For the first proper KeepingItPeel post of the day we are visiting one of my favourite bands. Urasei Yatsura formed in Glasgow in 1993 and consisted of Graham Kemp, Fergus Lawrie, Elaine Graham and Elaine 's brother Ian Graham. In 1994 they contributed a live recording of the song Guitars are Boring to a compilation released by the Kazoo Club (which was based in the 13th Note). This recording, along with their fanzine Kitten Frenzy brought the band to the attention of John Peel and a session followed. The band then recorded [...]

Indie-electro trio Union of Knives this week revealed that they had split up, and with the announcement came the now obligatory goodbye statement. Sometimes a band's last words are witty, more often they're as bitter as a lemon marinated in vinegar. We've compiled a dozen of the best break-up speeches by Scottish groups, starting with the most recent. Will the last to leave please switch off the lights? UNION OF KNIVES (January 2010) Craig Grant (singer): [...]

Urusei Yatsura were an excellent Glasgow based Lo- Fi band that were about in the 1990's, they were heavily influenced by bands like Pavement, Velvet Underground, Pixies and Sonic Youth. They released three albums in total, We Are Urusei Yatsura (1996), Slain by Urusei Yatsura (1998) and Everybody Loves Urusei Yatsura (2000) before finally calling it a day in 2001. The band name came from a Japanese comic, and roughly translates as "those pesky female androids" useless fact I know, [...]

Inspired by Marilyn's recent article on the same theme I thought I'd have a go in the hope that this might become a regular feature on AFIN. It's difficult question… there's so much music and so many obscure artists that one might like to mention for sake of namedropping them but, in all honestly, their minor cult status is perhaps ultimately y proportionate to their contribution to pop music. Then there are very well known and popular acts that are perhaps 'misunderstood'. And overrated bands? Don't even get me started… Anyway, here are eight more that, if you're [...]
![[MP3] Star Trek - Fantagóð mynd](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1712174_lg.jpg)
Ég var að koma af alveg fantagóðri forsýningu á nýjustu Star Trek myndinni, sem ber einmitt heitið Star Trek. Það er alveg óhætt að segja að hún veldur ekki vonbrigðum. Það er jafnvel það mikill hasar í gangi að hún gæti vel höfðað til þeirra sem ekki hafa fylgst með Star Trek áður. Hitt er þó annað mál, að það eru endalausar vísanir í upprunalegu sjónvarpsþættina, og allar eru þær smekklega gerðar, oft á tíðum smekklega "smekklausar" með vísun í hvað gömlu þættirnir voru hrikalega hallærislegir. Gaman að sjá Christopher Pike skjóta upp kollinum en hann var aðalhetjan í upprunalega [...]

I dont go on holiday until the 16 th May - two lovely weeks on the beach pictured above in St Kitts with Mrs Villain - but such was the magnificent response to the request for guest postings while I'm away that TVV is being handed over to various guests throughout May and the early part of June. Quite a lot of the mp3s that will be featured here over the next 6 weeks or so are quite different to what you would normally find, and to be perfectly honest, that [...]

[PHOTO CREDIT: Alex Woodward/Crimson Glow Photography ] We've raved about Projekt A-ko 's towering debut Yoyodyne so much already that a review at this point would be superfluous. Instead, we've asked band fronter Fergus Lawrie for a track-by-track breakdown of the record, whose official release date is Monday in the U.K. Mr. Lawrie was kind enough to oblige, but first we do have these remarks: if there is anything disappointing about Projekt A-ko 's full-length debut it is that, at least for the time being, the band is solely a recording unit, and no [...]

I continue with my 1000 minutes..for those of you who are are wondering what I'm talking about, check this out . After some sound advice from the creators of this project , I've decided to slow my 1000 minutes down abit. Why? Well, once I've run out of the designated minutes, there's no turning back, no editing. That will be it. After discussing the idea with my girlfriend last night we decided how interesting this would be, looking back in a years time and picking out the tracks that I've changed my mind about. I like [...]

We suppose we should start at the beginning of the story, which is this: when we were music director at the radio station of our small liberal arts college in Connecticut in 1996 we took delivery of copious excellent records. And in those days, pre- ubiquitous Interhoozle and MySpazzz and all that, one reliable indicator of whether the indie rock you were about to hear was any good was what label it was released on. So when we saw a new CD EP come through the door that spring from the very respectable Che Records, we took notice. The disc [...]
Last September, I told you the tale of Glasgow's very own Urusei Yatsura, one of those bands who really should have been far more famous than they turned out to be. What I said back then, I still stand by.... They were largely an out and out pop band with a sound that was influenced by so many others but yet somehow seemed distinctive. Sonic Youth in terms of the guitars….a hint of Pavement in
I like to think that most of the bands/singers that feature on this blog are reasonably well known, as that saves me giving a detailed explanation of who they are (or were, in the event there's been a break-up). As for today's lot – well I'm sure the name at least might be familiar to many UK (and Japanese) readers, but less so to my friends across on the other side of the Atlantic. So here's a

It's official - the CD is dead. We surely aren't the only ones who have hooked up some decent speakers to our computer to turn it into an all-inclusive mp3 jukebox. The advantages are obvious. There's none of the hassle of flicking through spines of plastic cases, no scratched discs to worry about, no need to spend hours on manual alphabetisation. All it takes is a click of the mouse and Dylan, Bob is your UNKLE. Nevertheless last weekend, while [...]
