Colin Langenus – an artist that holds a space near and dear to this music lover's heart – is descending upon California this weekend for a short tour with his latest project, the Colin L. Orchestra . The tour, which also features L.A.'s Residual Echoes , kicks off tonight at the Hemlock and then returns to the Bay next week for a gig at West Oakland's Life Changing Ministries Collective. Growing up during the '80s and '90s in the wilds of suburban Connecticut, my [...]

The USAISAMONSTER is a brilliantly fried two-piece guitar and drums band of sun spotters hailing from Brooklyn, NY. The band has roved the planet with instruments strapped to their backs playing the tops of mountains, skin-melting deserts, and rusted out America. The band has trekked across Europe, America (too many times to count), and Mexico. Their sound is a synapse firing melt of rock and other-wordly whisper. The rock goes from balls out to a gentle, massaging hand reaching into your cortex. Think astral plane hitchhikers like MEAT PUPPETS and SABBATH in the same mental fart as [...]
The strange, enigmatic, and ever-obscure rock outfit Usaisamonster now has a new b-side and rarities compilation droping via Northern Spy Records on October 9th. "Bulgarian" is one of the many tracks from it, and is actually modeled after a Bulgarian folk tune. More info here .
Hoo boy. What a weekend. I think it might be time to swear off alcohol again. At least for a little while. Party Friday night, party Saturday night, working all the while. My bones are tired, guys. I don't know how how much you're going to get out of me tonight. Maybe I should just [...]
I'm still in recovery mode after my weird sickness bug this weekend, so I'm going to make this quick. I'm feeling a little bit better, thanks for asking. I spiked a bit of a fever last night but slept for almost 10 hours, and today just battled some sporadic chills and fatigue. I think I'll live. If I don't, oh well! It was fun while it lasted, right? Go read some other creep's blog. Happy birthday, mom. I hope you enjoyed your squirrel's paw earrings, made out of 100% pure squirrel's paw! You're gonna be the talk of [...]

“My name is Rose. I can’t have any children due to the fact of having cancer as a child. Now I’m all grown up and wanting a child of my own! So recently one of my best friends purchased a monkey and she dressed it up and took it over to my house. I fell in love with it. It reminded me so much of a child. Then about a week ago she moved out of state and took the monkey with her. And I made up my mind then and there that I wanted a baby monkey. I haven’t [...]

Providence, RI noise rock wackos are back in down next Friday night (Jan. 15th) for a show at Death By Audio with Liturgy and Little Women . White Mice's latest release is Ganjahovahdose (20 Buck Spin) which came out last October. On this release, the band sticks to their tried and true formula of combining groove-oriented noise rock with an adolescent sense of humor that ranges from religious blasphemy to an obsession with cheese. White Mice are one of those bands that your friends will never understand. [...]

"They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." - Mark 16:18 From the emergence in the early 1900s of Pentecostalism from the Holiness movement, various denominations arose whose members speak in tongues (glossolalia) , cast out demons, prophesy, and engage in faith healing. There are those who, located in the Appalachian Mountains and their foothills from West Virginia to northern Alabama [...]

"Hey, Heavy D, what you got for me today? Got some heavy boulders? Shake 'em and they sound like dice?" That was the chant Jimmy Oliver heard when he walked down South Washington Street in Lansing, Michigan. Heavy D was his nickname, after the fat rapper whose girth Jimmy shares. And the heavy boulders? Those were the rocks of crack riding in Jimmy's jeans. A few years ago, Jimmy was a rich young drug dealer who could blow $12,000 over a weekend -- partying with prostitutes and buying big dinners for a dozen of the false friends his money bought. [...]

by kevin diamond Last night I had a dream that I was playing a gig. Before we could start, I had to replace a broken string on my guitar. The string I held in my hand was golden, and glistened in my hands. To get to the guitar, I had to traverse many obstacles: Mudslides, monsters, nudity, ukuleles. The crowd was growing impatiant. Golden string in my hand, I finally reached my goal, but before I could play my set, the crowd got up and left the auditorium. What do you [...]
After the antics of the first day of the festival, I felt more than ready to get into day two with a healthy dose of music from the beginning. Unfortunately, that was not to be so for me, as at the time I thought I would be continuing on after SXSW into further ridonkulousness, all [...]

USAISAMONSTER, bulwarks of the Brooklyn scene, recently announced that they are breaking up. They are going on a European tour and playing a final show at Market Hotel. They're one of those bands I discovered in college, thinking about them as some sort of very underground Brooklyn thing. I've since learned that they are an enormously popular veteran group on the scene here. They're known for their raucous live shows and were around almost before Williamsburg started being the Williamsburg we all love to hate today (they formed in 2000). I've never actually seen them before. Whenever a show comes [...]
