Could a man raised in a dangerous cult, with a history of insurgency towards these United States, become the leader of this very same country? Could a man with no name, no document of his birth, who spent his formative years spreading the doctrines of his clannish faith among those who've shown themselves hostile to [...]
A new week is beginning. I think it's going to be a good one. I think . I haven't quite figured out why yet, but for at least one of you reading this, it will be a good week. I should try my hand at horoscopes. Hey Aries, you're going to shit your pants this week. Pisces, you will find yourself drunk at least once. Uh oh, Leo…you have cancer. Poor Leo. You were always so innocent and free. You were always so…cancer free. Hey, look, I made a rhyme. There, that should suffice as an introductory [...]

By now you've probably heard that pioneering No Wave trio Ut has reformed and will be touring the East Coast in November. Their mini-tour starts at Brooklyn's Issue Project Room, where musician David Grubbs and art historian Branden Joseph have organized Theoretical Music: No Wave, New Music, and the New York Art Scene, 1978-1983 , a three-day event examining the intersections as well as the failed encounters of art, music, and cinema in downtown Manhattan. The festival starts on November 3 with a rare screening of James Nares' No [...]

I'm pretty sure that the first mention of No Wave that I ever encountered was in an old issue of Spin (Bongo cover?) in an article written by Byron Coley. So, there's a nice kind of symmetry to corresponding with him on the topic now. Better still, there's a sumptuous volume to go along with, the just-released No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980 [Abrams], co-authored with Thurston Moore. + Can "No Wave" be defined? As befits the name itself, No [...]

From the beginning, No Wave was an anti-movement set up in stark opposition to punk's tired reliance on conventional three-chord riffs. Stylistically exploiting the frisson between crudity and sophistication, groups like Suicide, DNA, and Ut reflected New York City's moral chaos back on itself, turning art into shock therapy. ( TV Party 's Glenn O'Brien once quipped that No Wave was "a Gong Show for geniuses.") From such assaultive beginnings, No Wave proved to be a complicated, elastic, genre-hopping beast. Subsequently, its influence has proven more long-lasting than the movement itself: its blend of twitchy disco, corrosive [...]
Silver Apples "Walkin'" - I feel silly to say this, but I didn't realize until recently that the Silver Apples even had a third, unfinished album. For whatever reason, I just assumed that the cd with the first two albums that I bought back in the late 90s was the sum total of their discography, but I'm quite glad to have been wrong about this. Whereas the mood of the first two Silver Apples albums was mostly quite heavy and bleak, there is a lightness of spirit in [...]
