I sprinted two blocks from my vehicle's perch above the roaring Schuylkill River into the dry refuge of the Church just in time for Uzeda. Though they looked like your parents (even your parents' parents- these Sicilians have been kicking it off-time rhythms and angular guitar style for the better part of two decades), Uzeda, in a verb, rocked. The drummer played the part of straight man, slamming out serious halting rhythms, while the bassist never once let his smile slip. He was the cheeriest Sicilian I've ever seen at the Church. The singer stood and shook with every howl, [...]

• I dropped the ball last night when I elected not to write a new Top Ten list this week. Have no fear, list fans! New Scientist ran an article about the ten things scientists don't understand about humans. The list includes laughter ("Why did it evolve?"), dreams ("What are they for?"), and pubic hair ("Scent radiator, warmth provider, or chafe protection?"). I've got some questions about human things that I don't understand. For example, why do women dress like sluts when they go out, but then pretend they're not looking for sex? Also, why weren't male nipples bred [...]
Hi lovers. Tonight is Sunday. LOST begins again on Wednesday. That's like, three nights! Holy fuck balls! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week I am compiling something that combines elements of intense instrumentation with frustrated, [...]
The sinners stand as though enchanted, their faces lifted. A path has opened in the darkness, a promise has been made, evidence has been presented: all will be saved, no explanations necessary—the magical dark-blue abyss, raised above us by nameless artists, speaks for itself, sings in a wordless language. The blue flows down toward the garlands of fruit and leaves.… Everything disappears, but again and again the lights flash on, the fête is endless, and any minute now the angels will begin to sing. Let there be light! - Tatyana Tolstaya, See the Other Side [...]

Hello, friends and foes. I hope this weekend is all that you want it to be. I'm sorry I didn't present you with a top ten list yesterday, but I'm sure those adorable animals (except the alligator, which isn't an animal apparently!) were a good enough replacement for my acerbic wit. Today's news stories from across the web include several lists, which aren't as funny as mine, but they're lists . • This article is supposed to present a list of the twenty most fascinating prehistoric paintings, but I cannot stop laughing at the link [...]

It's been rather dry around here, unlike in London, and on Sunday the most beneficial thing happened. A storm system lodged itself directly over where I live and it rained hard and steady until early afternoon. When I checked the radar to see what it was doing, it was churning and turning in one place, moving exceptionally slowly. A bit unusual for these parts, but not entirely unpleasant. As a matter of fact, it made for great reading weather, and by the time you read this, I'll know what becomes of Harry Potter and [...]
CoolTechZone has an article on the psychology of Mac enthusiasts , and why they are overzealous with their love affair for all things Apple. Even though the subject matter this author chooses to explore (computer geeks) might bore you, I suggest you replace the technology words with musicology ones. For example, try substituting "Mac" with...oh, I don't know, "Slint," and "Linux" "OS X" and "AMD" with "Spiderland" "Tweez" and "Untitled EP". You'll get the hang of it after the first few paragraphs, and will find yourself giggling uncontrollably as you draw comparisons between technology fanboys and music fanboys. [...]

I was listening to my iPod last night on the way home and had a distinct sense of déjà vu . This sound, this Uzeda, may be from Sicily but that pummeling rhythm, freeform guitar and piercing vocals could have been coming directly from Chicago in the mid-'90s. And for good reason: Not only are they on Touch and Go and have been since the mid-'90s, but Steve Albini is their recording engineer. So not only do Uzeda shake the paint off the walls, but they do it in a supersonic way that only Albini can conjure. Oh, to [...]

I am sure by this point, those of you that have a deep rooted love in all things post-hardcore and math rock have probably been keen on the new Uzeda record Stella for awhile now. For a few, it might even be one of the larger releases of the year. It also seems to be commonly popping up in "top 10" talk. Although for me it didn't initially strike me as such, the more that I've listened to it the more it has crept its [...]

Uzeda is an Italian noise-rock quartet consisted of Giovanna Cacciola (vocals), Raffaele Gulisano (bass), Davide Oliveri ( drums) and (Agostino Tilotta on guitar). Formed in 1987 the band contribute some of the more original works in the 90's. They self published 2 albums : Out of Colours (A.V. Arts, 1991), Waters (A.V. Arts, 1993) Before signing up with Touch and Go Records shortly after collaborating with Steve Albini ( Shellac ). After their four-song EP, 4 (Touch and Go, 1995), Uzeda's sound slowly matured and adopt [...]

... What is that sound high in the air Murmur of maternal lamentation Who are those hooded hordes swarming Over endless plains, stumbling in cracked earth Ringed by the flat horizon only What is the city over the mountains Cracks and reforms and bursts in the violet air Falling towers Jerusalem Athens Alexandria Vienna London Unreal A woman drew her long black hair out tight And fiddled whisper music on those strings And bats with baby faces in the violet light Whistled, and beat their wings And crawled head downward down a blackened wall And upside down in [...]
When I put Uzeda's "Stella" disc in the CD player, I was assaulted with hard, discordant crashing guitars. Further into the first track I was again assaulted by Giovanna Cacciola's (vocals) large voice wavering between singing and shouting. I knew then I was in for a hell of a ride. It comes as no surprise that the Catania Sicily (Italy) foursomes 3rd release was produced by Steve Albini. Finally, it all added up. I hesitate to say this is a difficult listen; it appears that way the first time around (just like listening to the Shellac sound the [...]

when steve albini curated atp a few years ago, uzeda were definitely the band to watch as far as i was concerned. coaxed out of retirement by steve, their set was pure joy. rare it is that you see bands so clearly enjoying themselves on stage, unabashedly. but then uzeda is a band that seems to be all about let your true emotions pour out. just listen to the cathartic wails of agostino's guitar, mimicking the primal screams from giovanna. and then there's that rythmn section, the bass adding serious meat to the drum's [...]
