Uzi and Ari, a pretty awesome group who named themselves after Ben Stiller's children in the film The Royal Tennenbaums , have been putting out albums and playing shows in both the U.S. and Europe since at least 2003. The band is signed in Europe to Own Records which has U.S. distribution via Secretly Canadian and even has distribution in Japan via Friend of Mine Records. The Lower Deck is a quality boozer. A world where aul' regulars, students, couriers, GAA buffs and indie geeks collide. The place has a fair share of characters. Some of those characters spill down stairs to the basement, which admittedly, is not the best laid out venue in the Dublin. The stage is at the corner of the L-shaped room, so the bottleneck crowd at the bar get a muffled din while the side of the stage gets blasted out of it. Uzi & Ari - Missoula This time round, Uzi & Ari are using different colours. Where before they favoured warm spreads and rich cushioned tones, here those shades are used only to provide a brief respite to the cold and solid whites and greys that surround, like a snowfall that has ceased to be beautiful, and instead grown dirty and hard underfoot, like a badly-laid footpath. 'Missoula' is exactly like this, with different rushes of guitars and glockenspiel melding with cut up beats to roll past like unwelcome clouds, casting shadows on all beneath them. [...]

Uzi and Ari are a 6 piece from San Francisco that reminds me at times of Broken Social Scene, The Album Leaf and the Postal Service if those bands had simply decided to put out their home demos. There's a really nice warm sound to their latest (third) album Headworms and with decent gigs being a little thin on the ground in January Uzi and Ari could be one of this month's better nights out. The Dublin date in particular should be good with Land Lovers, the Yeh Deadlies and the new band from ex-Coldspoon Conspiracy [...]
i'm not one for compiling meticulous best of lists, my listening approach is far too scattershot for that. but this year has seen some excellent albums. it's also seen a resurgence in vinyl sales, something few people predicted when the ipod was first released. so it seems traditional formats are surviving the digital age, even if actual physical sales continue their decline. what that means for the future of the music industry is relevant only to those in its direct employ; for the rest of us, the main thing is that the music continues... anyway, here's a list [...]
