This single from Brooklyn four-piece Forest Fire didn't start too promisingly for me. As well-produced as A-side "The News" is, and as much as I enjoyed the squealing, semi-discordant saxophone, the song still sounded like someone had taken Vampire Weekend, The Shins and Fleet Foxes and chucked them in a blender. Not necessarily a bad combination, it's just that whoever did the blending forgot to add anything new to spice up the recipe. It's a perfectly listenable song, and at two and a half minutes doesn't have an awful lot of time to outstay its welcome, but it's not one [...]

ROSTAM is the new side project of Vampire Weekend/Discovery instrumentalist and native Washingtonian Rostam Batmanglij. He released his first single, "Wood" on his tumblr last week, and it's all sorts of beautiful. From the swirling strings to the familiar rhythmic twangs of middle-eastern instruments, the track transports the listener to a place like Iran, where (naturally) Rostam's parents are from. I know, I know, everyone hates Vampire Weekend. But I promise this song is worth a listen. One of the VW's members, Rostam Batmanglij, uploaded "Wood" to his tumblr and the blogosphere is now posting it like mad.
