This week's Baker's Dozen highlights 13 albums from the 1970s that often go unmentioned when discussing the best music from the decade.
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Bassist Mark Smith was found dead in his London apartment Monday, Nov. 2, when he failed to turn up for a gig. The 49-year-old made a career out of playing as a session and touring musician for popular acts such as Roxy Music , Bryan Ferry , Robbie Williams and David Gray . The beautiful and really smart people over at NPR's All Songs Considered have taken on one hell of an ambitious list and they are leaving it up to us to decide how it shakes out. All of the details are right here . Yep. The 50 greatest voices of all time. This was a brutal vote...and one that I probably could have done about 17 different ways. See, I am - at heart - an over-analyzer. First of all, I think there could probably be a completely separate post about the 126 "finalists" they picked, but [...]
There are many ways for musical artists to break it big these days, but winning an Academy Award might be the most unorthodox of all. That's the path that Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova took. The two hooked up to star in the indie film Once two years ago, and the rest is history.

By 1977 Warner Bros. had quite a stable of artists producing R&B, soul, funk and dance music - or disco, in the parlance of the time. That is what sold and what managed to get on the radio, but in truth the Warner R&B artists were as varied as the label's underground acts just eight years before. Cook Book , a two-LP sampler focusing mainly on the WB/Reprise R&B acts ("black" music, in the parlance of radio programmers) had a little bit of everything: pop artists (Dionne Warwick), jazz artists (George Benson), gospel soul shouters (Candi Staton), Motown alumni [...]

Van Morrison will release a documentary film focusing on his renewed playing of his Astral Weeks album, which he has played in its entirety in a series of concerts. The film, titled To Be Born Again after a lyric in the Astral Weeks title track, will be released early next year. It was made in conjunction with music video producer Darren Doane, who co-directed a film of Morrison playing Astral Weeks at the Hollywood Bowl. Doane, discussing the project with Rolling Stone , said that the [...]

Arlo Guthrie We take a short break from our exhaustive, year-by-year look at the Warner/Reprise Loss Leaders to cite a few of the artists who appeared throughout this series with great music. We could call it our Loss Leaders All-Star Team. Between 1969 and 1980, the label issued 35 samplers that were available to the public, and these artists were perennials. Arlo Guthrie - Woody's son made 13 appearances in the Loss Leaders series, appearing on the very first sampler in 1969 with "The Pause Of Mr. Claus," featuring one of [...]

I know I've been neglecting the blog lately. That's mostly due to writing for Big Wheel, but also real work & just plain laziness. So to make up for it I thought I'd share with you a favorite concert of mine. Van Morrison live at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, CA, 4-26-1970. Van Morrison has long been a favorite of mine. I actually prefer Van Morrison to Jim Morrison. His Irish brogue not withstanding,I've just always been of the opinion that his body of work is better. I know it's rare to compare vastly different artists, but in this [...]
Legendary Frames bootleg sees the light of day.

I coulda sworn that my old roommate mentioned this years ago - that Belding does Karaoke at all the dives in like Glendale and Burbank. I wonder if this was the plan the whole time? Either way, he fucking does JOURNEY. Anybody remember that episode of family guy where they have to save the clam and peter and quagmire and cleveland and joe start singing 'Don't Stop Believing' and then all of a sudden everybody cruises out and the bar is packed again? Well, Journey sucks. This is probably going to be really funny thought. "NEW [...]

todays saturday is by an old standard, van morrison . while the singers biggest hits are most likely to be heard at the hangge uppe or ricks american cafe, there is a whole bed of work that many of us, myself included, have probably never heard, and thats where todays track comes from. i can still remember the first time i heard this song (thanks to nick sha, the cool guy) during a memorable night of just hanging out with the motley crew of people that was left in the house during fall break when everyone else [...]

Van Morrison - You Don't Pull No Punches.... The Mud Hut
It seems like we've been talking about Van Morrison and Astral Weeks for almost a year now ( oh, that's right... we have ). So, it seems only right that the legendary singer/songwriter has decided to give us an up close and personal view of his last 12 months. In what will provide each and everyone an opportunity to relive the 1968 classic just as he did, Morrison has announced plans for a brand new documentary. Titled To Be Born Again and due for release in early 2010, the feature-length film will [...]
