RiP: A Remix Manifesto is a fairly illegal documentary about copyright and remix culture whose filmmaker is and isn't, Brett Gaylor. Essentially, hundreds upon hundreds of copyrighted sound and picture bits have been mashed up to support and sometimes indulge the fancies of Gaylor's thesis: Remix culture should be embraced, not restricted. As an open source film, it has undergone (and continues to undergo) more than just revisions, but remixes of itself. These mashups are made possible and encouraged by Gaylor's posting of the source files online. The film was first dropped in Montreal at the Festival [...]
CMW is an annual music festival held in Toronto which showcases bands from across Canada and as well around the world. This is a great time for our great Canadian talent to get some global recognition, and is also a great time for music lovers to see 3 days of amazing music without travelling around to see it. The host hotel and central hub of activity will be the luxurious Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The music related part of the festival features four nights of performances by over 500 Canadian and International artists. I thought it would be a [...]

Caleb Buyers Let's be honest, there's not a lot of reason for there to be a Carl Newman solo record. The man is the chief songwriter in The New Pornographers , an outfit that turns out material at a pretty decent rate all things considered, and it's not as though he has a metal jones to itch that wouldn't work in the context of the Pornographers - when he puts on the AC Newman hat, he's still the consummate popsmith. But the whys and wherefores are his business - for the rest of us, [...]

Written by Fense Vancougar is the Washington State University (my alma mater) newspaper. While I went to the Pullman campus (whose daily paper is The Daily Evergreen ), the Vancougar is the Vancouver, WA campus' bi-weekly periodical. We are the Cougars, and this year we fuckin' ROCKED the apple cup. Of course, the two teams playing, WSU and UW, are pretty much the worst in the nation, so there's not much to boast about winning in double overtime. [...]

Saturday night in Seattle is looking like it could be a logistical puzzle without a solution. There are no less than four shows that I can highly recommend. I'd like to be at all of them, but physically and chronologically I don't think it's possible. Option 1 : The Green Pajamas at Jules Mae Saloon Starting down in the south end at Jules Mae Saloon in Georgetown, the Green Pajamas , one Seattle's most [...]

I'm sick at home today and feeling a bit off...time to take a detour off the beaten path. Today we have the cleverly named girl group, Vancougar, who also happen to be from Vancouver. A little Mates Of State, a little Giant Drag, and a little 60's girl group, these ladies are sure to bring a smile to your face. Vancougar - Obvious Vancougar official site Vancougar on MySpace

Ani DiFranco : Emancipated Minor (Red Letter Year, 2008) Lisa Mitchell : Neopolitan Dreams (Welcome to the Afternoon EP, 2008) These Are Powers : Cockles (Taro Tarot EP, 2008) Vancougar : Obvious (Canadian Tuxedo, 2008) Vivian Girls : Blind Spot (I Can't Stay 7", 2008)

Photo by Phoebe Mitchell-Innes It's sheer coincidence that Ireland's UAE's National Newspaper chose to run this piece last week about three of the bright lights of the London "anti-folk" scene - Laura Marling , Johnny Flynn and Noah & The Whale - all of whom are coming to town in the next few weeks and all of whom I'd been planning on writing pieces on in the next few days. But they did, and thus anything I might have to say is completely redundant so read [...]
Insomnia is a terrible thing, but if you're going to suffer, you might as well turn your bleary-eyed, twitchy lemons into musical lemonade. That's why, last night, somewhere between an optimistic 2:00am and a cranky, defeated 4:30am, I made my girlfriend another mix. The reason is simple. Rebecca is leaving her job, and this, my friends, is a VERY good thing. For Rebecca hates her job. Loathes it. And now, she gets to walk away. Tossing her "I live for caffeine" coffee mug into the trash and tearing down the "Get Fuzzy" cartoons off her beige [...]

Once again, I'm pretty tardy with this thing, I'm not really sure why it takes me so long to post these, considering I only write this little paragraph (and I usually phone that in too). This week Drake tackles the latest from everybody's favorite secret Scientologist, Beck and a new one from sludge metal veterans, Melvins . (That's right, you waited a whole week for that little nugget.) -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 07.08.08 After last week's short showing, the crop this week more than [...]

After last week's short showing, the crop this week more than makes up for it. The obvious release this week is the much anticipated team up of Beck with producer Danger Mouse (DangerBeck?) on the album Modern Guilt . Also this week sees new releases from Melvins , Albert Hammond Jr. , Feral Children , Ratatat ( poached last week ,) Abe Vigoda and a strange collaboration between Patty Smith and MBV's Kevin Shields . Playlist: New Releases [...]

No Graboid last week since there was pretty much nothing worth mentioning; though, this week brings us the highly anticipated eighth studio album, Modern Guilt , from Beck . Haven't had a chance to listen to this one yet, but i'm always anxious to hear how Beck has managed to reinvent his sound which each new album. A couple of other releases worth mentioning include Ratatat's very solid LP3 , Albert Hammond, Jr's Como Te Llama? , Sunny Day Sets Fire's Summer Palace , and an EP from [...]
The wealth of new releases this week more than makes up for last week's dearth. Check out the latest from Beck , Ratatat , Saul Williams , and Albert Hammond, Jr. . Looking for something new? Check out the debut LPs from Sunny Day Sets Fire , Paramount Styles (former Girls vs. Boys vocalist/guitarist Scott McCloud), and Seattle band The Dutchess and the Duke . Also, be sure to pick up the new EPs from Joseph Arthur (his fourth this year) and Architecture in Helsinki . Perhaps most [...]

Many songs, even some of the greatest ones ever made, are simply too dense - too full of possibility - to reveal themselves completely the first time through. But then there are the ones that you hear once, and immediately know that you'll love them forever. Obvious - Vancougar Not surprisingly, this category tends to be filled with songs exactly like this one. Warm, energetic, full of swooping power chords and keyboards that dazzle you like the sun after a summer storm. It's exactly the sort of song that you [...]
