In this edition: we feature the work of Australia's Oliver Tank, discover Local Hero, plus our weekly considerations and videos. Artist Feature: Oliver Tank Last month, we featured Guerre who records on Yes Please! records. The holidays got in the way of featuring his label mate, Oliver Tank . Out of Sydney, Oliver is a dreamwave artist who released his Dreams EP back in November through Bandcamp. [...]

It's not a new year's song, per se, though traditionally sung at midnight here and abroad. Rather, its message of friendship everlasting after a life well- and long-lived finds voice in, and brings hope and closure to, a multitude of celebrations throughout the English-speaking world, predominantly funerals and other ceremonies of remembrance. I posted a set of covers of Auld Lang Syne back in the waning days of 2009, too. But the Robert Burns poem and its various melodies seem particularly apt this year. For we heard its [...]

2011 has turned out to be the year in music where I found myself resting, and drinking deeply. If you look at the three major music festivals I went to in 2011 (other than SXSW, which is always a debaucherous 1000-mph wonderful mess) they were all of the scenic, restorative type: camping at Sasquatch at Washington's Columbia River Gorge, Telluride Bluegrass where I pitched my tent right by a rushing river, and Doe Bay Fest on isolated Orcas Island in the San Juans. The ethos of these music festivals, more than anything, is a [...]

Chris Kasper played to a sold out crowd at World Cafe Live (Philadelphia, PA) for 'The First Hundred Years Are The Hardest' CD Release Show and it was incredible. The live version of these songs sounded so unbelievably good that I could not imagine anyone walking away from that show Friday night disappointed. On stage along with Chris Kasper (vocals, guitar) was Andy Keenan (guitar, banjo), Phil D'Agostino (bass), Kevin Killen (drums), and Jaron Olevsky (keys). Kiley Ryan and Adrien Reju also joined in on backing vocals for a few songs. I definitely have some [...]

Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Tomorrow night Vandaveer, who are one of my favorite DC bands, will be playing with Melissa Ferrick at Stubb's inside stage. Hailing out of the nation's capital via Kentucky, Vandaveer is Mark Charles Heidinger, with help from the lovely Rose Guerin and a host of rotating musicians. In addition to releasing his own records under the Vandaveer moniker, Mark Charles has made a name for himself playing in These United States and fronting The Apparitions. He's a multi-talented singer-songwriter whose music conjures a myriad [...]

We previously posted the schedule for the Midpoint Music Festival , but we cannot yell loud enough about our excitement for this Fest. It is always one of the best of the year and the line-up is, again, amazing!! Just to name a few of our favorites... We can look forward to (in order of appearance): We Are Hex, The Pass, Those Darlins, The Joy Formidable, The Watson Twins, Mates of State, The Seedy Seeds, Xiu Xiu, Okkervil River, Deerhoof, Cheyenne Marie Mize, Starfucker, Toro y [...]
Vandaveer is the project of Mark Charles Heidinger, currently based out of Washington, DC. Vandaveer started as a solo side project but nearly a year in, Rose Guerin joined and added harmonies to the folk Americana sound. Both Mark and Rose were members of DC's Federal Reserve collective; they started informally collaborating each month and then eventually moved on to a full time musical partnership. Together since 2008, they have released three albums. The third full length, Dig Down Deep , was released this April. Above is the music video for the title track. Check it out [...]

I am totally stupid-in-love with the new Vandaveer album. I slipped it into the car stereo Wednesday when I headed up to an organic farm in Lyons, CO for a workshop on digital storytelling (more on that adventure later), and it seriously has not been switched off. I keep finding tracks that I love and putting it on repeat and sitting for extra minutes in the driver's seat after I reach my destination, so the song can finish playing, and I can finish my illustrious harmonies. This is some fantastic stuff. [...]

The Heartless Bastards -aren't. They are rock n roll, the kind you miss before they're gone. I am already reaching for the car radio as "Out at Sea" fades. Immediately I want to go back, go back and repeat that catchy riff, the charm of a full female lead, the tormented call of Erika Wennerstrom . These intoxicating psychedelic garage rockers played one of many acoustic tour dates Friday, July 22 nd, at IOTA . Vandaveer was [...]
I will admit it: I am a sucker for a bowed string instrument. If you intersperse a little cello, violin, viola, or even a bowed bass into your rock music, I'm going to fall for it completely. There's something about the richness of a cello or the sweet, chiming nature of a violin that adds...

I guess I could say that I hope and expect this Scorcese Bio-doc treatment will be even better than No Direction Home . I think this one will be [...]

Premieres: Radical Dads – "New Age Dinosaurs" - The star of this video claims to want a girl who likes him for what's on the outside, so therefore, he puts up the most ridiculous exterior possible. Series: No Cover Episode 7 – "Hey Joe" - David sets up their first audition…but there's a catch. That catch is David's loyalty to Joe, a former client who has what some call a "drinking problem." Animation: In Statu [...]
"The Great Gray" is from Vandaveer's album Dig Down Deep . http://vandaveer.bandcamp.com/ http://twitter.com/#!/vandavee r

Here is a fine video from MM faves, the Washington DC based collective, Vandaveer . Admittedly the subject matter of The Great Gray , as well as visual palette, is rather dark. But the music is an undeniably gorgeous send-up of Delta blues, stompin' swamp boogie, and colorful electric folk. Think Blind Willie Johnson meets Nick Drake . It comes from recent album Dig Down Deep which has proved to be one of our surprise, and best, discoveries of the summer. [...]
