Vandaveer is the project of Mark Charles Heidinger, releasing their debut album Grace & Speed in 2007 before following it up with the acclaimed 2009 release Divide & Conquer , which was the record of theirs that first made us sit up and take notice. Since then we've had the equally excellent Dig Down Deep in 2011, and now the wonderful Oh Willie, Please... a fabulous re-interpreting and re-imagining of age-old murder ballads and songs of self ruin. In fact these themes of " people doing very bad things, [...]
Videos today featuring the epic, driven - though dreamy - southern rock of Black Books , the murderous folk of Vandaveer , the post-punk and garage style of chromatic BLACK and their award winning video for 1, 2, 3, 8 and finally the brilliant new video from Crystal Fighters for latest single You & I . . . . [...]

We make a clear distinction between tribute albums and cover collections here at Cover Lay Down, with the former typified by a narrow focus on a single band or artist, and the latter a catch-all category that incorporates multitudes of subtypes, from thematic multi-artist covers albums such as last year's Hurricane Sandy benefit project The Storm Is Passing Over to single-artist collections whose tracks share little common bond save the love of the interpreter. As noted last month in our three-part series on New and Impending Tributes, it's been a great year so far [...]

Touring in support of his latest releases - the Wishbone LP and the Bedroom EP - British singer-songwriter Bobby Long plays World Cafe Live tonight. Vandaveer use acoustic guitars, banjos, and pedal steels to flesh out the murder ballads they took right from the public domain. It's an interesting folk project worth hearing. Get a free download of the lead single "Pretty Polly" inside. [...]

The Queuecast is the best I could come up with in an attempt to amalgamate the anticipation of heading off to SXSW on the weekend, with the inevitable queueing to get into stuff once there. Actually, that’s not quite true. There’s so much going on at places like SXSW that really, if the thing you want to see has an annoying queue (and for me they are never anything other than annoying) outside it, then you can always walk five minutes down the road, walk straight in untroubled, and see something else equally brilliant instead. Mrs. [...]

Oh, Willie from Vandaveer's upcoming album that's out in North America April 30th on CD plus limited edition vinyl and digital formats, download Pretty Polly from the album below.

Here is our selection of the best of our February downloads together with a few brand new tracks to dig into. So go on. Knock yourself out. Blank Realm - Cleaning Up My Mess Sitting somewhere between the melancholic churn and burn of Mercury Rev and the noisy squall of Sonic Youth , the four-piece gleefully meld psychedelia with punk and pop and even a smattering of blues licks, all to fantastic effect. We're long time admirers of Kentucky's Vandaveer and so you can imagine our delight to learn that new album Oh, Willie, Please... will be a collection of their reinterpretations of age-old traditional folk songs and murder ballads. Sounds like pretty much the perfect combination. For now, download Pretty Polly as your dark-hearted taster, and accompany her to her pitiful end as Willy, rather than marrying her as planned, chooses to prepare a freshly dug grave and deposit her in it instead. In the original version of this song from 1750, the 35 [...]

Possibly the only good thing to come out of Kentucky other than Bourbon is the macabre song makers of Vandaveer . Their song writing is thick with themes of death, murder, and ghosts; one's spinning dark tales of fiction and possible truth. Download "Pretty Polly" - a harrowing story telling song from the darker side of folk. Look for their next full release - Oh, Willie, Please... - coming April 30th. Here at the Hive, we love Vandaveer . But we really love Vandaveer with a banjo. WITH A FUCKING BANJO, Y'ALL. If the first single released from the band's upcoming album Oh, Willie, Please is any indication, this album shall be a barn burner. Songs of murder and self ruin are said to abound and in regards to the latter, we're sure that this album will take over our hearts (as self ruin is a favorite here, please see that Autobiographical [...]
Here's some great Valentine's Day news for you: Vandaveer's releasing his new album Oh Willie, Please... on April 30! And what would Vday be without a little gift to go along with it? Today Vandy's given us an MP3 to, uh, celebrate the day with. I hesitate to say this song is going to "celebrate" [...]

Posted in Music Box J'aime beaucoup cette chanson / Fine Music Selection & Homemade Mixes.
Vandaveer just released a new video for his song "Spite" from his 2011 album Dig Down Deep. A few seconds in and it's not hard to see why: if the Mumford & Sons/Head and the Hear crowd get ahold of this track, it's going to catch fire. "Spite" is one of his best; it's a [...]
I may have mentioned it here before, but making mix tapes is one of my favorite hobbies. At some point during high school, which I mostly found unbearable, I distinctly remember thinking that I had all these great sad songs, but they were spread out over too many different albums. Why not combine them into one powerful tape of self-loathing? Seemed a great idea at the time. I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm feeling down, I just can't stand upbeat music. I'd rather play something that echoes my mood; it's always done a much better job of [...]

This playlist started out as just another monthly GTI mix on 8tracks (for June), but of course I waited too long and now it's July. Hence the shift to a more seasonal title. Just in time for summer, there's a strong influence of straight-up rock & roll, especially with the Struts, the Mynabirds, Purling Hiss, and Burning Jet Black. Mixed in with that are a bunch of new singles released in June, as well as a great song from last year (Vandaveer's "Concerning Past and Future Conquests"). Expect to see a feature very soon for Stone Cold Fox (whose EP [...]

Johnny Brenda's is one of my favorite venues in Philadelphia, so I couldn't have been happier when I learned that the very talented Joe Pug and Vandaveer would be playing there. This was my second time seeing Pug at Johnny Brenda's; you can read about last year's show here . We've caught a bunch of great shows in Philly this month: Andrew Bird/Patrick Watson at Union Transfer, Justin Townes Earle/Tristen at the TLA, and now Joe Pug/Vandaveer. Vandaveer , the project of Mark Charles Heidinger, was new to me, but with his compelling folk songs, great harmonies [...]
