Be My Baby, Then He Kissed Me, I Can Hear Music, Da Doo Ron Ron, Baby, I Love You, Leader of the Pack, River Deep, Mountain High - Ellie Greenwich , co-writer of all those landmark no. 1 songs, surely knew how to craft irresistible pop tunes, mostly together with her husband John Barry, and producer legend Phil Spector. Apart from defining a girl pop era of her own - maybe there even would have been no Wall of Sound without her -, she also recorded two highly respectable solo albums in 1968 and 1973. Ellie Greenwich, who simply [...]
Speaking of modern takes on sixties girl-groups, back in the early '90s long before her relationship with Johnny Depp, French actress/model/pop star Vanessa Paradis recorded her self-titled, English language, debut. Helming the production, instrumentation and songwriting was her, then, beau Lenny Kravitz who, long known for his fascination with all things retro, created the perfect vintage [...]

Throughout the '80s and early '90s, Express clothing stores were the number one source for fashion-savvy American women to indulge in sleek, Parisian style. Conceived as a younger, hipper version of its parent company, The Limited, Express channeled the streamline fluidity and comfort of European fashion. Even their clothing displays were chic. One of my earliest memories in a shopping mall is of an Express display: mannequins resembling surrealist painter René M agritte 's bowler-hatted men with apples hovering in front of their faces, set against red brick walls with silhouettes of cut-out sky behind them. During this golden age in the clothing retailer's history, Express was [...]

This week, the third live album by Vanessa Paradis is released, arguably her best. Ofcourse, V's not the world's most steady singer, but that's easily forgiven. Divinidylle Tour features almost every track from the D.I. album, plus a beautiful version of Varvara Pavlovna (the b-side to Joe le Taxi), Aznavour-cover Emmenez-Moi and an a-capella rendition of Le Tourbillon, sung with the crowd. Oh, and Maks: four songs were recorded in Bruxelles, so you can probably hear yourself scream. For starters in this funky version of Joe Le Taxi. I've added the versions of JLT from V's other live-albums. See -M- [...]

I ought to be rich enough to have a secretary to whome I could dictate as I walk, because my best thoughts always come when I am away from the machine. Walking along the Champ-Elisées I keep thinking of my really superb health. When I say "health" I mean optimism, to be truthful. Incurably optimistic! H. Miller - Cancer tropic 01. Otherwise known as Mrs. Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis is a star in her home country of France. Star of the screen, the radio and Chanel commercials. As for her music, I would say it is inherently Frenchy, whatever that means. Listen: Vanessa Paradis ~ Divine Idylle Vanessa Paradis ~ Que fait la vie? Bonus live covers: Vanessa Paradis ~ One (live) Vanessa Paradis ~ Beast of Burden (live) Further study: [...]
Nowadays Vanessa Paradis is more universally known as Johnny Depp's wife than as a chanteuse. I still remember watching the video for that song 'Joe Le Taxi' on TV when I was really really little. Anyhow, her fifth studio album 'Divineidylle' has just scored her another number one in France, and in my opinion, it is a quite good album - authentic, well-crafted French pop. I gave it a 3.25/5 . The lead single, also the title track, is by far the most immediate on the album. It is fun, catchy, head-bopping, and contains those infectious 'doo [...]

There are several versions of Vanessa Paradis' new album Divinidylle . There's a regular cd-version, a vinyl version, a special cd-edition featuring a booklet with pictures taken during the studio sessions (this I have), there's a Japanese version featuring two extra songs, Emmenez-Moi and I Wouldn't Dare . Haven't heard that last one (if you have it, please mail it to me!), the other is available via iTunes and other downloadservices. Emmenez-moi rang a very tiny familiair bell - I just realised it's a cover of a Charles Aznavour-song. A very beautiful one, and [...]

This just in: two songs from the new album Divine Idylle by Vanessa Paradis , releasedate September 3. It features songs (co-)written by Thomas Fersen, M, Brigitte Fontaine, Alain Chamfort, Franck Monnet, Vanessa herself and Jean Fauque. I haven't heard all tracks, but what I heard was either beautiful, brilliant or both. Let me know what you think. Vanessa Paradis - Les Revenants Vanessa Paradis - Des Que J'Te Vois

The aptly titled live-album Au Zenith (2001) seemed to conclude the recording career of Vanessa Paradis . But, oh joy, she either got tired of being Mrs. Johnny Depp, being a mum or both (or maybe she now has the time), Vanessa's back on track! A new album is due next year, featuring songs co-written by Alain Chamfort and M . But thanks to FS-reader Alexandre, here's a brandspankingnew song she recorded for the musical Le Soldat Rose , written for kids of all ages by Louis Chedid (father of M) and Pierre-Dominique. The concept-album [...]

Are there songs by Serge that can't be sung by a girl? Requiem pour un con springs to mind, but there are at least two female versions of this bitter, angry revenge-song Serge wrote for (and sang in) the 1968-movie Pacha , with Jean Gabin. See that great scene here . To me, the song is a speech on a funeral of a major asshole, read by someone who finally sees his chance to get even. Ofcourse, girls can feel that emotion just as well, both Zazie and Vanessa Paradis did credible [...]
