Here's part two of my gig-crazy summer trip this year. I left you off where we staggered away from Pulp's gig at Wireless only two days into our trip. The next day, after an afternoon at the Tate Britain, we headed off to see Lou Reed at the Hammersmith Apollo. I'm sure there are people out there who will tell us "I told you so." Yes, Lou Reed is a notorious curmudgeon. Yes, he's made some very unfavourable career moves. While it was special to see a legend I never thought I'd see in my life, he [...]

The cover of What Difference Does It Make by Stranded Horse got me thinking that there must be other great versions of Smiths songs out there so tonight I give you a Smiths covers special. Parenthetical Girls - Handsome Devil (The Smiths Cover) by speaktoome VANILLA SWINGERS - "Hand In Glove" (The Smiths cover) by sonshine Baby Guru - The Queen Is Dead (The Smiths Cover) by [...]

As I prepare to broach the subject of 20102s best cover songs, please keep in mind that I am quite picky about cover songs. I generally hate cover songs, as a matter of fact. I've even had arguments with commenters about the fact that I hate to be introduced to a new band via cover song. Look through the blog archives and you will discover that there are very, very few covers that we, uhhh, covered. That being said, I never stated that I didn't appreciate when a cover was done right. Quite the contrary! The fact [...]

This post has a back story. And a reason for me to come out of the hiatus once again. I was quite surprisingly contacted by 24 Hour Service Station , a Florida-based record label that released a double-disc New Order Tribute Album earlier this year. They were looking for a decent cover of The Smiths' Hand in Glove by an indie band for an upcoming Smiths tribute album. I would say I have a fair collection of covers by one of my favourite bands of all time (estimated at around 400), but it seems nearly no one [...]
Two copies to give out of this brand-new tribute to Morrissey and co! Enter to win!
Today, us east coast kids are hunkered down, waiting for that hurricane that probably won't hit us at all but which provides a good excuse to take the day off! Of course, we at Consequence of Sound don't even know what this day off thingy means and will probably work through the 2012 apocalypse. But you should enjoy a day off, just for the sake of having more time to read all our great content AND listen to all the awesome music included on this week's Friday Mixtape. Once again, it's jam packed and thanks to the recent [...]

I didn't really want to attempt a list of my favourite albums of the decade - the list for this year alone was more work than I needed. Instead, I decided to hit some of the ways this decade dealt with music - how technology has changed the musical landscape further, what globalized capitalism has done to the music industry, and what media convergence did to help out. Then as a second part, I thought I should add some of my musings on the decade as far as my own musical development goes - after all, I became an adult [...]
Here at TVD HQ, we're the happy recipients of a lot of good will arriving via the mail each day. Like, a lot of good will ...from bands, PR folks, labels, etc. SO much good will that we're passing on the clutter...to you. Typically a record or CD arrives, we preview, burn the suggested tracks, and more often than not, post for you guys to download and spread like a healthy dose of H1N1. But there's only so much room. So, in an effort to actually see the floor once more, [...]
I spent a little time up at Som Records last night after a perfectly agreeable walk from the office downtown in some lovely, warm mid-October weather, picked up the new Clientele and Manics LPs AND a bottle of wine, and took the long route home. True to his newly established schedule, Pete was ready for his last walk of the day shortly after I got back and out we went, the sun down now but still quite balmy indeed. He’s pretty particular about where he does his thing, so I had plenty of time to meander [...]
Most likely in a testament to some personal fortitude, I often find that I can look back on horrible experiences or times of duress...with some fondness. I mean, it doesn’t happen right away, but the gamut of experience infuses me with an appreciation for a time of crisis, most often after some reasonable time has expired. I can’t say why this is and I’m largely thinking (er, typing) out loud, but there you have it. “A grace note is a kind of music notation used to denote several kinds of musical [...]

I realize I've missed yet another weekly mix last week; as usual, work has been hectic, and I had to go out of town for a work meeting - really out of town, meaning the rock-and-tree landscape of northwestern Ontario, not really my comfort zone. For this week's mix, I'm going to return to a theme I did last year: songs inspired by literature/books/authors. If you're interested in what I chose last time, or want to check before you point out that I missed some obvious song, click here . One of my favourites in this [...]

And so we've reached the end of this year's journey through my top albums. Before we get into the top eight, I'll try to sum up which albums released in the last few months of 2008. September brought offerings from Jenny Lewis, Mercury Rev, People in Planes, Butch Walker, No and the Maybes, Glasvegas, Santogold, Jon Ryman, Metallica, Chairlift, Kings of Leon, and a sophomore record from former Suede frontman, Brett Anderson. There were also a few that have already made this countdown, including TV on the Radio, Ladyhawke, and Okkervil River. October's albums was jam-packed with records [...]
Vanilla Swingers are London’s latest duo (Miles Jackson and Anne Gilpin). They come in a great melodic pop format with lots of nostalgic pinches and charming melodies. The duo has crafted a wonderful debut (out on August 11th on Radio Ballad label and available to download for free from here or if you rightfully prefer to a order a copy you can from Rough Trade) which slowly unveils the love/

Former SDM band to watch, Vanilla Swingers , have released their first album and are currently allowing people to download it for free. We were really impressed with this album when we heard it back in June, and multiple listens have done nothing but reaffirm our love. For a little information about the album you can visit their website or check out our previous post . If you like what you hear and would like a hard copy there are 1000 limited edition CD's available at Rough Trade . [...]
From conversations I’ve had with various people it seems that it might be best if you've had a good grounding in 80’s pop before you try on the delights of the Vanilla Swingers. And they do do a near perfect rendition of all that is good (none of the bad thankfully) about the music that came out back then. Primarily made up of the London duo of Miles Jackson & Anne Gilpin their talent doesn’t

These two bands have more in common aside from both being male/female duos. Both bands' music is rather haunting and pulsating at the same time, a lovely combination. On their debut album, London's Vanilla Swingers weave an elaborate yet touching tale of finding, leaving and reclaiming life and love through the magic of time travel. A lot of their songs have a hushed quality about them, although they do let loose on occasion and the tension becomes more evident. [...]

Their name alone drew me in; Vanilla Swingers are Miles Jackson & Anne Gilpin. And if you like your electro-pop in the style of The Dream Academy, Prefab Sprout, Talk Talk, earliest Magnetic Fields and Heaven 17 then you'll dig their debut album, due in a couple weeks. Danger In The Past - Vanilla Swingers Back To The Present - Vanilla Swingers Goodbye Lennon - Vanilla Swingers [...]

On my way to Chicago!!! Pretty excited! Never been there... I was all set on going for a much needed vacation then I noticed that Lolapallooza was being held August 1st - 3rd so that solidified it for me. I figured that would be the perfect time for a visit. Check out the City, the Bean, play a couple of gigs and check out a festival. Don't think I'm gonna go all three days, too expensive and not the biggest fan of the line-up, but Saturdays is gonna be my day. MGMT, Ting Tings, Booka [...]

I've been meaning to write something about my general feeling of malaise with new music, and now that I've read two very eloquent posts about this same feeling at To Die By Your Side and The Vinyl Villain , I very likely don't need to now because I don't know if I have that much more to add, to be honest. But since I must write something to keep this blog alive, I'll do it anyway. It's my blog and I'll rant if I want to. I'm twenty-five, so why I feel so jaded about [...]

The first of several British artists exposed in today's feature is Vanilla Swingers , a duo comprised of Miles Jackson and Anne Gilpin. Though their name indicates a production of some overly flamboyant form of funk, they have been generating quite a bit of buzz in the UK for their consumingly seductive interpretation of electronic pop. The duo utilizes conventional elements of pop in their usage of guitars, bass, and percussion, but the inspirational electronic element arrives in their extremely impressive grasp of appropriately atmospheric melodic additions. With serene synth pads and lulling sound clips often supplementing infectious melodies [...]
