The never-ending arguments about the decline or even death of originality in music are becoming increasingly irrelevant, in my eyes. What is most important is not what a band do, but instead, how they do it, and above all, what they do with it . There are many bands around that Various Cruelties could be lumped in with, and in the wrong hands, their passionate, shamelessly poppy songs would be stripped of all life and enthusiasm, but by deciding to go down the self-titled route for their debut, they've made it more like a declaration [...]

Various Cruelties: Great Unknown Having popped up on my radar over a year ago, I've been championing Various Cruelties to little avail so far. The Londoners play an eccentric brand of pop/rock that seems primed for bigger audiences. Having released a few singles last year (Neon Truth, Chemicals) they got invited to perform on Later With Jools Holland which was successful. Great Unknown , the lead single off the self-titled debut album (out April 2nd) now has a music video and hopefully 2012 will be the year when everything shapes together for the [...]

various cruelties - great unknown [we tipped this soul sourced rock band back in april and it looks like they are gaining momentum in 2012 as their current single is playlisted on the influential UK indie stations xfm and bbc radio 6. i have a good feeling about these boys and look forward to seeing them gain major appreciation in the coming months!] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld
Various Cruelties ' latest single 'Great Unknown' has a fitting title, given the band is currently treading on the cusp of their debut album. The London-based band formed in 2010, and since then have honed their formula, crafting a series of indie pop hits to build up tension before their highly-anticipated release. 'Great Unknown' progresses naturally, building upon a catchy riff that carries the tune through an explosive, almost anthemic ending. Lead singer Liam O'Donnell, whose voice almost echos the style of Band of Horses ' Ben Bridwell, is missing a bit of edge towards [...]

Following on (belatedly) from Eclectic Eavesdroppings Favourite Albums of the year, here are my Favourite Songs of 2011 . Compressing the musical year into a mere twenty-five songs is a tough task for a music junkie like myself. Listing the songs in order of preference is near impossible. But either way, I've done my best to get a list together and even though it's incredibly subjective, it sums up a very good year in music. Stream it as a playlist on YouTube over HERE or download a copy of the whole mix over HERE . [...]

"Do we fade out or burn like the sun?"… "Do we see this through together as one or do we go it alone into the great unknown?"… It seems to me like Various Cruelties have big issues on their minds. Being a philosophy student I can indeed confirm that we can never know the answers to these questions. What we can know, however, is that Various Cruelties are releasing the new single "Great Unknown" on the 1st January 2012. What great questions to kick off a new year with. Read more..

Tweet Listen to Various Cruelties 's new song "Great Unknown" below. Remember way back in January when cool things happened, like you woke up and for once there was no snow on the ground, you had enough milk left to eat breakfast, and awesome bands with bags of potential sent you their excellent music ? No? Well I do, especially the last part, because that's what Various Cruelties did. We [...]

Various Cruelties have been really busy recently. They've only been around for about a year and they've already played shows with the Vaccines, Noah and the Whale, Fixers and Tribes. Things are looking good for them. They're set to release a new single at the beginning of January next year and look out for them on Later with Jools Holland in the next few weeks, they'll be playing alongside Lou Reed & Metallica. Hand's stamped and beers ready the Hope crowd prepared for a night of rock n roll, punk and whole lot in between. Headlining were the newly signed Various Cruelties, setting out on their UK tour off the back of an impressive festival season, having also supported the likes of Mumford & Sons and The Vaccines, evidence they're as well connected as they are talented. The night kicked off with local Worthing lads Chemical Smile thrashing it out in their floral patterned attire. Images of an Ordinary Boys all grown down came flashing past your eyes, only spurred on [...]
