See more of his excellent work at irocktheshot.com .] It's my understanding that the seeds for the New Multitudes project were first sown as far back as 1995 when alternative-country godfather Jay Farrar (Son Volt , Uncle Tupelo ) was tapped to collaborate with Billy Bragg on what would eventually become the ' Mermaid Avenue ' album. After Jay declined, Bragg wound up recruiting Wilco and released two discs of previously unheard lyrics by folk singer Woody Guthrie put to [...]

Last month, we were told of a new project called New Multitudes that features Jim James (My Morning Jacket, Yim Yames, Monsters of Folk, Will Johnson (South San Gabriel, Centro-Matic), Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, Gob Iron), and Andes Parker (Gob Iron, Varnaline). The project will record an album using lyrics from Woodie Guthrie that he did not get the opportunity to use while alive. From the original press release: Under the invitation of Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, to tour the Guthrie archives, each of the four songwriters were offered the [...]
Did you know about this? I just read a 3-star review of the New Multitudes CD - a collection of songs built upon unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics by Jay Farrar (Son Volt), Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline), Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket) - in the new issue (Paul McCartney-cover) of Rolling Stone . The magazine's website did a feature on the release which one person commented, probably rightfully so, "Wasn't this album called Mermaid Avenue?" I'm snagging this [...]
Listen to a sort-of supergroup featuring members of My Morning Jacket, Son Volt, Centro-Matic, and Varnaline put unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to music.

As we previously reported Anders Parker, Jay Farrar, Yim Yames and Will Johnson headed into the studio to record a new batch of Woody Guthrie songs (think Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue) which will be released on the album New Multitudes . Now that we received an album release date of February 28, a tour has been announced. It's unclear if this ensemble is going to get a name, if they are "New Multitudes" or they are simply going to be billed individually. Also unclear [...]

top of the evening. the last 72 hours have been kinda hell in the ol' van dyke home. i'll spare ya the gory details, but lets just say that puking, massive shits and body aches have hit all 4 us. fun times, fun times indeed. i found a copy of this very cool comp that was once included in the uk mag, comes with a smile . it seems as if they did it monthly, and all the comps seem to have been of pretty high quality. judging by their site, it may seem like they are down for [...]

Varnaline is one of those bands that nobody likes when I introduce them. Really. Seems like nobody likes them. Although the fact that Pitchfork didn't like them when this came out in 2002 kind of makes me really happy --that said, the part about the "brief banjo solo played by a retard" is fucking hilarious and kinda dead-on. I know they have a rabid fan base out there somewhere, I just haven't ever met a single member of that fan base. Still, I really enjoy them (him?) and think somebody else might too. Maybe? [...]

well, hey here is the remainder of my top 30 records of the 00's. is it odd that the truckers take up 4 spots out of said 30? that either says to me that i need to expand my horizons a wee bit more, or they happen to put out stuff that i love, a lot. im leaning towards its more of the latter. im sure i have missed a few, but if i have missed em then could they truly be considered a favorite? 21. drive [...]

You Should Know Anders Parker is yet another example of an artist making great music in relative anonymity. Anders has released five critically lauded albums under the Varnaline name, two with the band Space Needle, and recently two solo full-lengths and an EP. Anders also has some impressive connections. He teamed up with former Uncle Tupelo member Jay Farrar under the moniker Gob Iron to release 2006's Death Songs For The Living . Anders has also received the praise of living legend Steve Earle, who actually released [...]

Varnaline "Only One" Yeah, so I lied last week about not playing hooky, thus making the Baby Jesus cry. Sorry, Baby Jesus. This was gonna be a post with a couple Prince covers, but consider that TK as I try to make up for missing the opportunity for a Valentine's entry. But then, for those in love, why pick out only one day a year to celebrate it? I guess it's just the powerful candy, flowers and heart-shaped-things lobby in action, as well as the delicious opportunity to [...]

Varnaline- Little Pills I listened to Varnaline's Man of Sin when it was released ten years ago. It sailed right over my head. I picked it up again last week and in hindsight it sounds like the perfect intersection of Richard Buckner's gothic Americana and Chris Whitley's white-noise blues. Varnaline mastermind Anders Parker has gone on to critical acclaim, if not commercial success. He has two new releases coming out on Halloween. --- I've seen Chuck [...]
