Beth Jeans Houghton has a promising sound. It feels like a marriage between folk-country and a little recent Natalie Merchant thrown into it. All quirk aside, she is a singer-songwriter from Newcastle upon Tyne who plays "sweet and gentle folk music." Beth Jeans Houghton has been described by The Guardian as looking like "Gwen Stefani with a touch of Brody Dalle", with a sound that "is Vashti Bunyan crossed with Nico and Laura Marling" In early 2011 Beth Jeans Houghton signed to Mute Records who announced that they will be releasing her debut long player in early 2012. The [...]

David Garland to release 'Conversations with the Cinnamon Skeleton' January 17 Featuring guest appearances from Vashti Bunyan , Sean Lennon , others The Epiphysis Foundation is pleased to announce the latest full length release from David Garland . 'Conversations with the Cinnamon Skeleton' makes use of its components the way a gallery shows its works: sounds, words, instruments and guest musicians each feature as distinct and respected pieces. Woven together, these varied [...]
For no real reason, this month's mix happens to be the least eclectic and also contains zero electronica or ambient—the genre that, until now, has felt like the unifying thread of all my monthly mixes. At any rate—as usual, this mix is meant to be listened to in order. Aside from the Andrew Bird track, everything here dates from 1972 or earlier, and most fall on the narrow spectrum between folk and country. So be it! If you like any of these songs, visit my sources to hear more. Blossom Toes: [...]
Vashti Bunyan is a hipster's dream. A hippie that commuted across the UK, release one album in 70s' and then disappeared into oblivion without leaving a dent on any charts. Decades later, her album grew into being a collectible and was noted as an influence by such freak-folk personalities as Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom. Now, it has become a cult classic. This is one of the standout tracks from her career. Pick up her discs if you have the chance - there's some good stuff on there. Filed under: Beats , [...]

Stephen Farris is a producer and visual artist based in Houston, Texas. He's my favorite unsigned producer at the moment, with three outstanding releases to his name that display a unique understanding of composition and form. I didn't know what to expect when he agreed to send a mix our way, but this work features a broad spectrum of influences - including a track he's made exclusively for the mix - and serves as the perfect introduction to his sound. It's been a while, hasn't it? Today's list is nostalgic, and includes a track by John Fahey (who I initially discovered on this very website). It's slightly warped playlist to listen to on a sunday drive. Just like the pumpkins in the photo, it's earthy and organic, but in a slightly bent and malformed way. Folky, country, electronic and exotic. A few of these original pressings fetch a mighty dollar online, so enjoy the rips. 1. John Sangster - Sunrise (Australia And All That Jazz Vol.1) [...]

Video: Daniel Martin Moore & Joan Shelley Cover Vashti Bunyan Acoustic guitar, lightly plucked banjo, and a pair of reverent voices interlock beautifully for this cover of English folk veteran Vashti Bunyan's 1970 Just Another Diamond Day ditty, "Trawlerman's Song." Watch Daniel Martin Moore duet with Joan Shelley, whose forthcoming LP features a Bonnie "Prince" Billy collaboration, above (via Cover Me ) and check out two more cuts from their Sleepover Show here .
MP3: Daniel Martin Moore - The Trawlerman's Song (Vashti Bunyan) Big thanks to Cover Me for pointing out that Daniel Martin Moore's Sleepover Shows session contains this great Vashti Bunyan cover. I wasn't that into Vashti's work when her resurgence came around, but this cover is really making me rethink my noncommittal nature toward her [...]
Watch Daniel Martin Moore play Vashti Bunyan's 'Trawlerman's Song' on banjo.
On " Calgary ," Justin Vernon's vocals lay in a cloud of gloomy synths and anxious electric guitar tones, suggesting a sonic shift from the grainy For Emma formula. But not too much has changed - the ghostly falsetto remains Bon Iver's calling card. JV's voice has also been unmistakable on recent collaborations (GAYNGS, Volcano Choir, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ) and an asset when he takes on someone else's song. So I'm especially looking forward to the "Calgary" 123 b-side, a combined cover of two Bonnie Raitt classics, "I Can't Make You Love Me" > [...]
Sometimes you wake up on a Wednesday with nothing to do and nowhere to be, and it is a great feeling. I went out with Thesy last night and had a really good time, grabbed some beers and met up with a new friend for a couple hours, and I still got home relatively early. [...]

TUNDRA SCARS :: JANUARY 2011 :: MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS There's not much to love about winter. If (like me) you're up against the Eastern Seaboard, you're stuck with 3 months of gale-force winds, bitter cold, and slushy, salt-covered sidewalks. For those that share our pain and anguish (not you silly Californians), we whipped up ' Tundra Scars ', a mix of chilly, seasonable songs that have been getting us through these months. While Ben threw in some smooth R&B and mellow folk, I went heavy on the soul-crushing slowcore. It ain't [...]

Lizard Kisses Brooklyn Marc Merza & Cory Siegler W e started dating this past spring, and we started Lizard Kisses pretty soon after. It was conceived sort of by accident. At first it consisted of the two of us just fooling around with some toy instruments we got in Chinatown and jamming out in our bedrooms. Then we finally decided to start recording it. We wrote the bulk of our debut EP on [...]
Bad Braids is a very intimate project, clearly intended to showcase the beautiful talents of Megan Biscieglia. Her talents as a guitarist, vocalist, and lyricist are on full display throughout Arrow and Orb, a fascinating and ingenious release that mixes gypsy-folk, psychedelia, and country-rock with awe-inspiring results. Biscieglia's voice has a sort of twang often [...]
