Pity the poor music fan who fell in love with Vashti Bunyan's debut album, Just Another Diamond Day, upon its release in December of 1970. Surely they were left pining for a followup that wouldn't arrive for more than three decades. Bunyan's re-emergence in the first half of this decade provided one of the most surprising music-biz developments in recent memory. Hers is a heartwarming tale, too, because who doesn't want to believe that great music is always destined to be discovered, if not today then sometime in the years ahead? You can't be too bad if you take a 35 years break from the music scene and still manage to return in style. In 1970 ' with only one album and a bunch of singles to her name - Vashti Bunyan quit her promising and critically acclaimed career to raise her kids and look after animals. Her debut album 'Just Another Diamond Day' is widely regarded as a hippie-folk classic, especially among popular freak-folk acts as Devendra Banhart and Animal Collective. Perhaps, their succes has ease the way for the return of Vashti in 2005 where [...]

Vashti Bunyan makes some of most beautiful music I've ever heard. I've covered her in detail with a previous entry , having a life story that I find to be more interesting than just about every other musician I listen to. Actually on the top on my head I can't think of a more interesting story, so I'll just go right ahead and crown Vashti with the the most amazing lifetime award, and one that still seems to be far from its close. Check out the linked "previous entry" for more on that- it's too good to just summarize. [...]

The heat wave continues. I spent all afternoon in the Glendale Barnes and Noble reading various texts to pass the time. The few times I stepped outside I could instantly feel the sun scorching my skin. My car's thermometer measured the air temperature at 108 degrees. I thought that was a little high, but the owner of the market around the corner from my apartment said the one in his store reached 105. I think it's supposed to continue like this for another day or two. I need to find something else to do tomorrow to occupy my mind. If [...]

Bottling Smoke Day 2 was a lesson in unbelievable psychedelic soundscapes, free improvisation and avant-garde composition. My day began at roughly 2pm when I walked over to Echo Curio. I bumped into some people I had met the night before and we headed around back to the merchandise booths that were set up in the rear of the building. I purchased some CDs and CD-rs, then headed inside to catch New Fairfield Parks And Recreation and their melding of folky acoustic guitar with homemade signal processor glitch-work. The Alps (a Jefre Cantu project) did not perform, so the next act [...]

Vashti Bunyan released her album Just Another Diamond Day in 1970, so she has been around for quite some time. I honestly had trouble deciding which songs of hers to post, because they are all so good. Vashti's music is about as carefree as folk music can get, which is why I love it. It evokes such great "spring" imagery that you can't help but be happy when you listen to it. That being said, there are a few songs interspersed throughout the album with a more melancholy tone that act as a cloud over the sun for [...]
I'm going to start a new themed series with this entry. It'll feature artists who have been recording music for 10+ years, and all the songs featured need to have a bare minimum span of 10 years between them. I'll start this theme with one extreme case.. a 35 year stretch between the release date of a debut album and the follow-up. This would be Vashti Bunyan, a formerly obscure British folk singer who initially began making music in the late 60's. Her life is an amazing story, something I will attempt to summarize here. When visiting New York in [...]

. For all those parts of the bodily harmony, which are distributed through the whole body, within and without, and of which I have just been saying that they at present elude our observation, shall then be discerned; and, along with the other great and marvellous discoveries which shall then kindle rational minds in praise of the great Artificer, there shall be the enjoyment of a beauty which appeals to the reason. What power of movement such bodies shall possess, I have not the audacity rashly to define, as I have not the ability to conceive. Nevertheless [...]

Vashti Bunyan, "Lately" - We'd all like to think that we're original, of course, but the sad fact of reality is that even in your most unique and distinct moments, no matter how hard you Natalie-Portman-in-Garden-Stat e it up, someone somewhere else has already both been there and done that. The way I see it, we have two options - you can either wallow in self-pity for having misconstrued your life's story as that of some scion of history (not necessarily the wrong choice, mind you) or try to keep your experiences in a frame, focusing your trail-blazing energies on [...]
