In case you haven't figured it out yet, I've been a member of The Mash Up team for like two months. Last weekend, I got to go to my first event with them as a team member and they hosted a fundraiser to save the 28 & B Skatepark in Sacramento. I was in charge of taking pictures of the event and I got a few pictures of some of the neighborhood kids skating, the attendees and the headlining performer, Del The Funky Homosapien. I finally got my Oh Dang Magazines. [...]
I cry on few occasions. One definite is always the last scene in Home Alone ; a brother can't hold tears back when the old man neighbor reunites with his granddaughter. My other soft spot is whenever I'm alone driving while smoking blunts and bumping classic beats; sometimes my emotions take over. That shit happened recently while I was jamming RJD2 's " Final Frontier " remix (with Blueprint , Aesop Rock , Vast Aire , and Murs ). My tears weren't just because it's one of the finest posse cuts that [...]

It's very easy for me to say that El-P has re-invented the wheel twice in the Hip-Hop game. The first time he did it was with Fantastic Damage (One of the best debuts ever?), and without a question he did it again on I'll Sleep When You're Dead . Don't get me wrong, I love both albums as much as you possibly could, I just think Fantastic Damage has a slight edge on ISWYD . The dark, hard hitting, brain hemorrhaging beats on this album are some of the most crazy concoctions my ear drums have [...]

If you haven't been paying attention to the beef-radar lately, Vast Aire released a diss track towards Cage and the rest of Def Jux. All of this rivalry going on has to do with the unfortunate passing of Camu Tao. Cage outed Vast very harshly about how his relations really stood with Camu, and this track apparently was Vast's response. It really saddens me to see all this bullshit beef going on in the Hip-Hop community, it's really the last thing that we need right now. On a related side note, I got an e-mail on my Blackberry [...]

Rjd2 is one badass dude, he released Deadringer in 2002 (one of my favorite albums of all time), and roughly one year later he released this ten track gem otherwise known as The Horror EP. Don't get me wrong, Deadringer is a multi-level musical masterpiece but I think The Horror EP is a little better. This EP has ten top tier tracks, revisits some of the best moments of Deadringer and further more, it features some of Rj's best beats. I feel as though if this was [...]

Being from the North East isn't Dialect 's weak point, nor is it their gimmick – it's what makes this album so refreshing. Their place of birth has driven them to create one of the most compelling Hip Hop albums I've listened to in a while. There's none of the usual slang or superiority complex that make many other UK releases a little tedious. There are only brutally honest accounts of their real life. This album should definitely not be dismissed by non-locals. This is one of those albums with which you can kick back with in [...]

Previous Midwest Broadcast Best of 2008 Posts: Non-Hip-Hop Albums Top 15 Mixtapes Intro: Well, it's officially Christmas, so I suppose it's time for me to begin writing this series. With 2009 around the corner, it's been more fun than I expected — albeit far more tasking, too — revisiting the seemingly endless number of albums that dropped in the past year. Narrowing this list down to a top 25 was arduous, hence the plethora of honorable mentions. In all honesty, I've [...]

During the '90s when Lootpack was around, Wildchild christened Madlib 's younger brother "Oh No the Mischievous Rebel." Now, he's simply Oh No and has put out Exodus into Unheard Rhythms , his second full length release on Stones Throw Records . Stones Throw easily sits atop the pile of indie rap labels. And interestingly enough, Madlib has seen fit to reissue some rare discs as well. Lootpack – "When I'm on Da Mic" Oh No's release , although forward thinking [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. I am one these jerks that makes fun everything I used to like. Cannibal Ox was my shit. It was Bladerunner music. The sound of New York City that fit the Kid A's and Kiko's. Futuristic and dangerous. Harlem standing up weird right before Harlem stood up louder, weirder and more dangerous. (Yet another Dipset referance) But Vast did say a word twice before because he is twice as nice around the same time Cam took 4 bars off. So I was youtubing [...]

St.Pauls' indie-rock mecca Turf Club showcases hop-hops indie-scene with Vast Aire from the legendary Cannibal Ox, performing tracks from solo jump Dueces Wild . I posted a few these cats' tracks a couple days ago and I've received positive feedback towards them. Their latest song off The Box features Cannibal Ox's Vast Aire in the "Beatrix." GZA also happens to be featured in the album, I'll put his track up once it leaks.
The proposed Cannibal Ox reunion appears to be marching onwards, as the latest Vordul Mega solo release features 2 new tracks with fellow CanOx MC Vast Aire (who shared the favour on his own album earlier this year) trying to recapture the classic atmosphere of The Cold Vein. The full album drops on the 19th August but I've got a MP3 of "AK47", one of the reunion tracks, as a sample to tide you over. Although not produced by El-P (who incidentally does feature elsewhere on the record), it shares the same space-age [...]

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I actually wrote this post a few weeks ago. For some reason I thought I posted it. Apparently I didn't. Yeah, that's how these last few weeks have been for me! On with with it... here's some new ish. Dwele - Open Your Eyes OK, this is kinda of a [...]

Vast Aire says at the beginning of The Crush , an unreleased track that originally was scheduled to be included on his forthcoming Deuces Wild (June 24), that this "is not a love song ... naaah." But let's be honest: That's just macho posturing. Because seconds later, Vast launches into a love letter of the highest order: "She got the sweet potato, I got the corn on the cob / tuck your shirt in, she don't date no slob." OK, so Barry White might have put it in a subtler manner, but you [...]
With his forthcoming sophomore album Deuces Wild set to drop at the end of next month, here is another unreleased heater from Cannibal Ox co-conspirator Vast Aire . This unreleased joint follows LP leaks TV Land , also flipped by Melodious Monk , and the Pete Rock produced Mecca and the Ox . Originally included on the Deuces Wild tracklist, this banger will not be on the album -- so grab it now . [...]
'No Rims' is a nice track by LoDeck & Omega One, I can't really read the biographies that I was sent because instead of being typed they're a well distorted JPEG. Anyway, there's some link with Stetsasonic and both artists have previous work of their own. If you ask me, well, even if you don't I'm gonna tell you, this is a nice track…oh, I already said that. Well IT IS nice. It has that summery soul vibe and a head nodding beat, not quite like one of those crafted in the 90's but the noughties version of that. [...]

Following up the street-single 'Mecca And The Ox' that was featured here , the Melodious Monk produced 'T.V Land' will be the first official single from Vast Aire's forthcoming sophomore solo long player 'Deuces Wild', which is out June 24th. mp3: vast aire - t.v land.

This one caught me unawares, some new Cannibal Ox material (of a sort) from Vast Aire's new solo album Dueces Wild , out 24th June. Teaming up once again with Vordul Mega on the mic, the production duties are taken by the legendary Pete Rock rather than El-P. However don't think this is your typical Rock beat, there's a definite Can Ox vibe to the track with a sci-fi feel. The weird high-pitched squeak throughout could definitely have been from The Cold Vein, whilst the drums and samples have been filtered into the space [...]
