Every year, we ask our friend Josh from the esteemed music blog Indie Kid vs Dance Kid to give us his best of. This year he just gave us a list of videos but neglected to provide comment, so being the friend that I am, I will provide commentary (in italics) IKDK Best of Holiday Songs; Best served with Eggnog and Rum Saint Etienne and Tim Burgess - I Was Born On Christmas Day Saint Etienne is Josh's favorite band ever and [...]

Your silent face - Velocity Girl Like Galaxie 500 with Ceremony , for the longest time i believed this to be an original Velocity Girl song. I'm such a dummy. Come to think of it, it does seem odd that an American band would say "Piss off." Or at least it sounds much more appropriate coming from an English band. They released it on a 73 with the Beach Boys' You're So Good To Me on the other side. Why would [...]
The influential North Carolina indie rock group's first and most essential album gets reissued as a 27-track-long double disc.

Sorry again - Velocity Girl I had a dream last night that they played this song over the P.A. at work. It is not completely out of the realm of possibility. We get all kinds of weird things piped in for us. Who knows how music licensing works? Anyway, i was feeling it, as i do when anything vital hits me at that time when i need something vital to hit me most. The part where they go "Woo-hoo!" came and in my little [...]

What you say - Velocity Girl I remember finding this record (the Screw compilation on Simple Machine Records) and thinking i had the Velocity Girl discography nearly cornered. Then i looked and saw that they were on Sub Pop, actually released albums and lasted all the way until 1996. I was convinced that there was just the Slumberland singles and a few compilations songs. I didn't even though they went through two singers. I didn't even know i could have found out [...]

>> Just catching up with the cognoscenti on this one, but am completely bowled over: Bos Angeles , who the hell are you, and why are you awesome? The Boscombe, England-based trio -- comprised of chaps named Dick, Ben and George who apparently "met making ice cream on Bournemouth beach" -- has recorded but a single track, "Beach Slalom," and you can download the thing for free at Bandcamp right here , and we highly recommend you do. The track is melodic and spare in the same way the best, non-synth-oriented early New Order [...]

I have this tendency to get addicted to songs to the point that the people around me begin throwing heavy objects at my throat and knee-caps. The detox process consists of playing the song over and over while I write a little narrative of my relationship with that song. Lately, I haven't detoxed; it's hard to get back into that habit once you've abandoned it. After today I promise not to discuss my lingering absence. My latest awakening is due to one of my all time favorite roadtrip songs, "Go Coastal" by a forgotten favorite: Velocity Girl. [...]
Wild Nothing shows their debt to history on a cover of Primal Scream's 'Velocity Girl.'

I normally reserve this blog for new stuff, but I just noticed that Slumberland is offering some free MP3s from Velocity Girl and I couldn't resist posting one. Here's "Forgotten Favourite" (which, come to think of it, is a pretty appropriate way to describe Velocity Girl). It's a blissfully rocking dream pop tune with all the touchstones you'd expect from a band that shared members with Black Tambourine : searing fuzz, buried vocals and blatant Anglophilia. MP3: "Forgotten Favourite"

About a month and a half ago, I posted a snOMG mix in honor of having somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 inches pile down in the grand old seat of Washington DC...not exactly a place deemed a Winter Wonderland. Well, if you've been watching the news or the weather at all this week...we actually topped the crazy snowfall that inspired the snOMG mix . We got two feet of snow this weekend...with at least one more foot on the way starting tomorrow. I haven't been to work since Friday morning and I doubt I'll go back to work [...]

Black Tambourine , a short-lived indie side project from the early '90s, is being resurrected with a new compilation that includes unreleased and newly recorded songs. The band's sound holds up well today. Throw Aggi Off the Bridge sounds quite a bit like the Pains of Being Pure at Heart . Somehow I missed these guys during their brief stint from 1989 to 1991. Formed by members of Velocity Girl and Whorl , the band never made a proper album. The comp is being put out by Slumberland , which is [...]
Songs containing the word 'semen' aren't usually this subtle and lonely-hearted. Yuck live in the long shadow cast by the Leaning Tower of Pinglewood and we expect to hear much more from them as the year grows old. Below, you can read their one and only wish. It's the best we've ever granted.
What to do with a problem like Terri? The Mrs. Schuester character, through no fault of actress Jessalyn Gilsig, has been a thorn in the side of Glee since the series was thrust upon us back in May, with the best episodes often easy to find by looking for a lack of Gilsig's presence in the credits. Thanks to an interview with Gilsig in the LA Times , we're tipped that "Mattress" was going to be the start of resolving the issue, and at the very least, the goings on will [...]

This is currently the go-to soundtrack to our efforts to get our baby girl to go to sleep and stay asleep. A sad by-product is the fact that we are starting to get sick of a lot of these songs, some of which have been favorites forever and ever (we first got The Glove record around 1989 or 1990, for example). That said, we still find almost all of these to this day to be very moving in their way whenever we stop and sit and listen to them go by on the IPod docked in the nursery. [...]

Which is kind of crazy. A number of years ago, just before my 18th birthday, I put on a show at my Dad's "farm" that featured some of the earlier Slumberland-related acts like Lilys, Swirlies, and Small Factory. When the label was based in D.C. It lasted two of the hottest days in July. Hundreds of people showed and my father regretted his decision to let me try my hand at show promotion when someone almost burnt down a few trees with fireworks. I'd wanted to book Velocity Girl, but for some reason it hadn't worked out. They were probably [...]

In celebrating the 20th anniversary of Slumberland Records we contemplated listing the label's best albums as we've already done for Matador and Merge earlier this year, but we realized that Slumberland's tradition is built more on the 7" release than it is on the full album. Since they started the label has put out more 7" singles than anything else and they've all been a magnificent mix of styles and sounds. Bands as varied as caUSE co-MOTION! , Stereolab , the [...]
For twenty years, US label Slumberland Records has dedicated themselves to putting out the best in new dream-pop, shoegaze, independently twee and wonderful new acts. Since the late 1980's Slumberland has been the sole home and host to well-known acts such as Velocity Girl, Stereolab, Lilys, Swirlies, Boyracer, The Softies, The Aislers Set, (so, so many more) and most recently; up and comers The Crystal Stilts, Pains of Being Pure at Heart and of course, Philly's own: Brown Recluse to name only a few...and we really are under-listing here! In the coming days, we've rounded [...]

all three of these songs popped into my itunes at once. there must be something in the water at the moment (or maybe it's the pot). the kind of music that makes me excited about limited edition 7" singles, like the last 15 years didn't happen, like there was no such thing as itunes. ::: pens - high in the cinema ::: vivian girls - can't get over you ::: pains of being pure at heart - higher than the stars [...]
