Celebrities are used to having things like sandwiches, streets or drinking games named in their honor, but there have only been a chosen few that have had a spider named for them. Today news surfaced that a new genus of the velvet spider has recently been named Loureedia, "in recognition of the fact that this velvet spider lives underground," in honor of the Velvet Underground front man Lou Reed. The spider, which is described as having a "dark and shiny" appearance and is known to live in Africa, Asia, Europe and Brazil. Reed joins both Frank Zappa and [...]

A few weeks ago, we listened to YACHT cover Brigitte Fontaine classic "Le Goudron" for a new single, and now we can listen the single's b-side, a dance-floor ready cover of The Velvet Underground's Nico -led "I'll Be Your Mirror." The original was released as a double a-side single with "All Tomorrow's Parties" in 1966, both tracks eventually ended up on one of our favorite albums ever, The Velvet Underground & Nico . YACHT: "I'll Be Your Mirror" [...]
Last month, we posted YACHT's excellently blippy cover of the great Brigitte Fontaine/Art Ensemble Of Chicago classic " Le Goudron ." And on that single's B-side, they repeat the trick, doing a similarly club-friendly cover of another counterculture-pop anthem from the same era. This one, though, is a song that you probably already have strong feelings about: The Velvet Underground's " I'll Be Your Mirror ." Hear the YACHT version below. Read More...

The Velvet Underground's third album featured a prayer. Here are five artists who answered it.

The hot dogs from Hoboken took on an obscure '67 Velvets gem long before it finally got an official release on that marvellous Peel Slowly And See box. Way to go, guys. Yo La Tengo - It's Alright (The Way That You Live) The Velvet Underground - It's All Right (The Way That You Live)

Kiki from King Midas Sound has recently reworked 'Venus in Furs,' one of the landmark tracks from The Velvet Underground's 1967 debut The Velvet Underground & Nico . The modern twist is backed by Evian Christ's 'Thrown Like Jacks.' The cover will be featured as the final track to Kiki's upcoming Hitomimixtape . Listen below.
Kiki from King Midas Sound works a little magic and adds some flair to this take on The Velvet Underground 's classic "Venus In Furs" using Evian Christ 's "Thrown Like Jacks" as a backdrop. If The Velvet Underground are sacred to you, you'll probably hate this, but if you also hold dear the advancement of music and enjoy the shit out of Evian Christ , you'll probably really like this, taken from Kiki's "Hitomimixtape" [...]

When did punk rock became such a chore? In the past decade, maybe more, there has been an unavoidable digression of punk music. This isn't a sort of revelation, of course, but through all the genres and sub-genres and sub-sub-genres, somewhere along the line the fun faded out and got lost in the noise. With genres like post-hardcore, pop punk, garage rock, gothic post-punk and something fucking called sea-punk in constant production, it's hard to retain the original spirit of a genre that made a whole generation go nuts about 40 years ago. There's almost like an elephant in the [...]
Coke Weed's second album "Nice Dreams" transports us to the pensive corner of the garage rock world.
Brooklyn's Tyburn Saints just dropped a new EP, You And I In Heaven , which is gratifyingly dark yet upbeat. From start to finish " Broken Bottles " swells with confidence, the song feels straight of the pages of 702s punk yet lyrically walks a line between The Velvet Underground and Joy Division . Tyburn Saints remind me of a death obsessed Dreamers Of The Ghetto . These guys are currently unsigned which seems impossible, [...]
