Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

Being that my typical night consists of hitting the sack at around 10pm, and that my new radio show is Friday nights from 10pm to midnight, I figured that my second show would center around the theme of sleep . So I pieced together a playlist of bedroom pop, chill wave, dreamy shoegaze and what I've dubbed as psychedelic ambiance. I took over for Stuarto just after 10 with a brief description of my first track, which I don't believe made it on air. The switch-over was a bit rushed [...]
This is probably my strongest post in some time, I really hope you get down on these songs in the same fashion as I have been lately: Glowbug - "The Shows" [mp3] Don't take this lightly when I tell you to go over to Glowbug's Bandcamp page and download this (free) album! That way when [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]
photo by ti-rouge I made this mix for my dear friend Amy who has- as our friend Andrea put it- a clapping fetish, but it turned into something that I really enjoy listening to. As implied, the theme of this mix was clapping. When I started collecting them for the first time I really examined which tracks included actual clapping, synthesized clapping, a tight snare hit, or just a catchy beat and decided to include them all. Since not all the songs contain actual clapping, [...]
Cougar Microbes caught up with Little Tybee's vocalist Brock Scott to discuss the "nuclear" family, viral hysteria, bringing back the mullet and LA rich little white girls. Here is how it went: Cougar Microbes: What time did you wake up today? Was it out of choice or necessity? Little Tybee: I woke up at 8 [...]

WUOG is the all-voluteer student-run radio station of the University of Georgia, serving the community of Athens. Except for the occasional show, I'm rarely in this neck of the woods, and I can't actually say that I've ever listened to 90.5FM. But judging from the lineup for Saturday night's third and final leg of their inaugural WUOG Fest , they've got some pretty good taste in music. The three day mini-fest starts tonight with a free 18+ show at Farm 255 spearheaded by Marshmallow Coast . The fun continues on Friday with another [...]

It would be extremely disingenuous for anyone to suggest that Venice is Sinking stole the spotlight from Oryx and Crake on Saturday night. But what was plainly evident was that ViS are a group of talented songwriters and veterans of the stage who are capable of putting on a highly-nuanced, emotionally-charged performance. While O+S were excellent, they do not yet have full command over their material. ViS, on the other hand, knows their stuff backwards and forwards, and it shows. I hesitate to use the word "professional," that's really not the connotation I'm looking for. I [...]

mp3: Venice is Sinking - "Tugboat" review by Jason Frye Sand & Lines , the latest album from Athens, GA five-piece Venice is Sinking, fills the atmosphere around you with the ghosts and ash of the iconic Georgia Theatre (where the band recorded the album shortly before a fire gutted the historic building). From the silent opening seconds of the album to the final chorus where they implore, "I don't want to get over you," Venice [...]

Frank Yang Understatement? This has been a very fucked weekend in Toronto . From the moment it was announced late last year that downtown Toronto would host the G20 summit of world leaders this last weekend in June, it has been an inevitability that things would turn out this way - an overwhelming police presence on city streets to greet masses of protesters and demonstrators who acted as camouflage for small groups of so-called anarchists set on turning things violent and wreaking mayhem - all while the world leaders met behind massive fences, oblivious to [...]

It's not always easy to be a Venice is Sinking fan. Their albums are quiet and sad, mostly, so you have to be in a very mellow mood to listen. Sort of like My Morning Jacket, but with less pep. It's orchestral pop-complete with violins, trumpets, etc., dense and heavy, tightly crafted. None of this is to say that they don't make good music. They do. I just feel like I have to let you know what you're in for. That said, the band uses powerful harmonies instead of hooks, which makes for [...]

Venice Is Sinking 's newest record was recorded live at the Georgia Theatre on two microphones over four days without the use of overdubbing or post-production. In theory, this idea seems very cool, but I find VIS much more compelling in the studio than in concert, and this stripped-down sonic approach strips out many of the elements of this band that I enjoy most. That's not to say that Sand & Lines isn't a good record, because it is. But it is a case of an artist taking a direction that diverges from my personal tastes, [...]
