If you're like me, you spend hours and hours listening to mp3 after mp3 of terrible, terrible music. This blogging lark may seem like shits and giggles to you, but by god you get sent a ton of awful songs. Every now and again though, you will find something beautiful amongst it all. [...]

First single – Europa – of the forthcoming ENTAKT album is now streamable from the band's Myspace page . Took me a little while getting into, but the lyrics are brilliant (as always and I feel so sorry for all of you, who don't understand Danish) and the song itself grows for every listen. Did you remember to visit Music of the Moment yesterday and wish Chris happy 40th birthday ? New track Tonight I'm Cutting [...]

So it took us several days but we've finally digested the lengthy email we received last week from Athens, Georgia's Venice Is Sinking . The superlative chamber pop quintet first hit our radar when some blog or other posted the demo track "Undecided" in early 2006. The song ended up on the full length Sorry About The Flowers the same year. In May 2007 the band began working on a follow-up, and after some protracted recording, line-up changes and other real-life business had its collective way with Venice Is Sinking , said follow-up is completed. It [...]

not another Christmas post? Well sort of I guess. My lengthy Christmas post has become just that – too long, so I've decided that future stuff concerning Christmas will be featured in new posts. But since we are only a few days away from Christmas trees, presents in the stockings, carols and belly aches, I have a suspicion that this will be one of the last ones (if not the last) you'll see in the blog this year! J.A. once again joins in and recommends a short and lovely [...]
Right, I can't hold off on this one any longer. From the very moment I clasped ears on 'The Grey Line' I was smitten. To make matters better it's a Christmas song so I know that every December from now on I will be gleefully wallowing in its sad verses. Venice is Sinking have made an appearance on mp3hugger before, just last year their 'Pulaski Heights' came it at #11 on our list of favourite

As if you couldn't guess this entire week of 24 Hour Party Pooper is dedicated to the Athens PopFest . Why? Because it's my favorite annual event in Athens (our annual Christmas parade notwithstanding). So, that being the case along with the fact that I'll be attending at least 85% of all these shows, there really seems nothing else more important to write about music-wise this week. (Oh, for a neat little story about PopFest and organizer Mike Turner, who is a dear and close friend of mine, check out Paste Magazine's feature .) [...]

...in lovely Venice. And a lovely song. MP3: Venice Is Sinking - "Pulaski Heights"

Image: Rebekah E. Raleigh So last night, 8 pm, I'm waiting for the Red Line train at Clark and Division and a violin busker shares the tunnel with me and maybe two dozen others. A violin, which isn't so common. Typically, public transport entertainers brandish bruised guitars and the eager, intense, extroverted energy of youth. This one, though, he's middle-aged and reserved, economical in his movements. He sports a mullet, which also isn't common. Not anymore, not in Chicago, not on [...]
Venice is Sinking, currently hailing from the indie-rock fertile soil of Athens, GA has brought to the table a brand of lush, orchestral pop heretofore unknown. Today's track, "Pulaski Heights", gently prods you along with a subtle yet unrelenting beat to which you can't help but nod to. Combine this with the singing melody lines of the violin and the haunting harmonies of vocals and you have one amazing song. If you dig this you can check out more from the band's MySpace page , PureVolume page , or [...]

I get to Los Angeles a few times a year. It's gotten me spoiled, now I can barely handle going to a store like FYE or Coconuts to buy music. $17 for a CD? Are you kidding me? In L.A. most of my music shopping happens in two stores, Amoeba Hollywood and Second Spin on Ventura Blvd. There also used to be Aron's which was a great store, but it recently closed. I think I am right, the Hollywood Amoeba definitely seems bigger than the Berkeley one. I [...]

Untitled Document I like a lot of music, but there is certain music that I find distracting, either because its so good I cant concentrate on anything else or its super loud or noisy and I just get frustrated. When I am working on something I like to have music thats melodic and unobtrusive. [...]

No clever titles today, folks. Venice Is Sinking's debut Sorry About The Flowers is rapidly establishing itself as the debut of the year. ViS is from Athens, GA - home of R.E.M. and Elephant 6. The band draws from different inspirations though, borrowing the dreamy aesthetic of Galaxie 500 and its successive split-offs, particularly the male-female harmonies of Damon and Naomi. What makes the record interesting (besides great, concise songwriting) is the inclusion of chamber-pop elements. A horn here, a violin there. The album drops in June, but [...]
