It's only the first of March and I can already tell that 2009 is going to be an amazing year in music. Let's do a quick list. Top releases by artist this year so far: Animal Collective, Beirut, Camera Obscura, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Pree, and Venice Is Sinking ( MySpace ). And I know I'm missing quite a bit here already. The last on the list is slated to give us their sophomore release, AZAR , ( reviewed by Fense here ) on March 31. [...]

Venice is Sinking premieres video for "Ryan's Song."
It was just about a month ago that we featured "Ryan's Song", a track from Venice Is Sinking 's upcoming release, AZAR on the new song daily podcast . Well, there is still another month before the album will come out on One Percent Press , but the good news is that you can now enjoy "Ryan's Song" with accompanying video which was just premiered over at Stereogum . There are also a few opportunities to check the band out live - two at SXSW - which are covered below. [...]

Lucas is too shy to post it, but I'm not: His band Venice Is Sinking (he's the drummer!) has a new album coming out next month and a new video, for the gently humming "Ryan's Song," available for viewing on the Internet right now. The clip is themed around a move, sort of, with our Athens correspondent spending some quality time under one of those heavy blankets things get wrapped in during moves. (I hope he got to breathe some fresh air between takes, because those things just suck up everything in the room.) [ Stereogum ]
Venice Is Sinking - "Ryan's Song" Venice is Sinking plays orchestral pop, Americana, slowcore, or space rock, depending on whom you ask. Founded in Athens, GA in 2003, this five-piece outfit eschews facile categorization. Its sound is familiar but hard to pin down, rooted in cinematic arrangements, subtle genre tweaks, and clear, ringing harmonies. The band's 2006 debut LP, Sorry About The Flowers, gained national attention for the crystalline male/female vocals of singers Daniel Lawson and Karolyn Troupe and for Troupe's deft layering of her instrument of choice, the viola, which makes few appearances [...]
Last night I had a dream that my boyfriend was hiring prostitutes for himself on a regular basis. Though it was only a dream, I was still mad as hell at him when I woke up. It was so strange, as we got in the car to go to work, I was STILL peeved. I put on Venice is Sinking's sophomore album AZAR on the car stereo and something really strange happened. I was overwhelmed with the desire to forgive him! Even though he [...]

Due in late March, the new album from Venice is Sinking , AZAR, finds the band widening its palette and deepening its focus, tackling the idea of location's ability to influence our lives. Growing musically since the band's debut, the group, challenged by engineer Scott Solter (Mountain Goats, John Vanderslice, Pattern is Movement), shed the "space rock" designation, from the wide-eyed "Iron Range" to the David Lynch prom theme of "Wetlands Dance Hall", from the heart wrenching "Young Master Sunshine" to the sardonic pop of "Okay". AZAR is a dynamic work [...]

Venice Is Sinking is not your average everyday band, and "Azar" is not your average everyday album. A series of orchestral, shoegazestrumentals by Keyboardist James Sewell, named "Azar One," "Azar Two," and so on, are strung out across the record, between songs that are sometimes organic and simple ("Ryan's Song") and other times complex and dramatic, like "Okay," which sounds like a Cranberries cover. But the thing that most marks a VIS album is the complex textures and wide variety of sounds. Singers Daniel Lawson and Karolyn Troupe are perfect for each other-his voice is light [...]
![Venice Is Sinking: AZAR [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1522338_lg.jpg)
Athens, GA is a hotspot for new talent, and one of the most promising acts in quite some time is the sometimes experimental, sometimes shoegaze greatness that is Venice Is Sinking ( MySpace ). AZAR is the quintet's second; it's an album packed with connotations like sometimes and conceptual and maybe even dreamy . AZAR is a lot of things. It flickers back and forth between them continually. The title tracks, "AZAR One" through "AZAR Four", are perfect [...]
this is the silliest article i have ever read . well, no not really, but still. like the above guy, i'm not really into the super bowl this year, either. we'll watch it, though. to see how bruce sprinsgteen does. get on your boots will be used as part of a commercial for the nfl during the super bowl. u2's actual get on your boots video rollout didn't actually happen in a very good way, or happen at all. what did happen? who leaked it? how [...]
Venice Is Sinking came to my attention some years ago with their first release, Sorry About the Flowers , a charming, symphonic gem of a pop album that, while slightly underdone and rough around the edges, showcased the band's wealth of passion and potential. Three years later, after a long and laborious recording process, that passion has been channeled and the potential realized. AZAR does the seemingly impossible: the band has created a lushly orchestrated and grandiose chamber pop opus without any bullshit. And for an album interspersed with four orchestral instrumental interludes [...]

Venice is Sinking plays orchestral pop, that's lush, rather expansive, and absolutely adorable. Founded in Athens, GA in 2003, this five-piece outfit eschews facile categorization. Its sound is familiar but hard to pin down, rooted in cinematic arrangements, subtle genre tweaks, and clear, ringing harmonies. The band's 2006 debut LP, Sorry About The Flowers , gained national attention for the crystalline male/female vocals of singers Daniel Lawson and Karolyn Troupe and for Troupe's deft layering of her instrument of choice, the viola, which makes few appearances in rock history. The new album, AZAR [...]

>> [IMAGE CREDIT: Lewes Herriot] We've acquired more information about those early Johnny Foreigner recordings we posted about here last week, straight from singer/guitarist Alexei Berrow and drummer Junior Laidley. The two emailed in details about founding bandmate Dan and the collection Weleftyousleepingandgonenow , which is not imaginary as we had speculated. In fact, Weleftyousleepingandgonenow contained 14 tracks and was released in a hyper-limited edition of 40 handmade copies sleeved in pictures of buildings from Johnny Foreigner 's beloved hometown Birmingham, England folded together to form some sort of house. The collection [...]
