Despite the fact that you don’t hear a lot pertaining to the Carolina Chocolate Drops on mainstream radio, they are Grammy winners. So it’s not terribly surprising that one if its founding members, Rhiannon Giddens, has a new project creating quite the buzz: Sonic New York. I recently had the pleasure of attending Sonic New [...]

Forget what you thought you knew about how to celebrate for the beginning of a new year. Forget what you thought could happen with two Bostonians, a collective of YouTube musicians, a pile of balloons, two cannons of confetti, and two thousand lovers of punk cabaret. If you were not one of the aforementioned fans [...]
Perjantaina 15. toukukuuta Korjaamon Kulmasalissa esiintyy sisaruskabaree Vermillion Lies (US) sekä suomalais-amerikkalainen Vuk . Illan aikana näytetään myös lyhytelokuvia. Vermillion Liesin muodostavat burleskityylille pukeutumisessaan omistautuneet, femme fatale -sisarukset Zoe ja Kim Boekbinder . Bändin musiikki vastaa ulkonäköä. Yleisten instrumenttien, kuten kitaran, pianon, harmonikan, saksofonin, xylofonin ja lyömäsoittimien lisäksi musiikkia muodostetaan epätavallisemmillakin esineillä: lelupianolla, jauhosiivilällä, padoilla, kattiloilla, kaasupulloilla, kirjoituskoneella, grillillä ja jopa kumimustekalalla. Soitinvalintojen vuoksi Zoe ja Kim kuvailevat showtaan nimikkeillä " junk store cabare t" tai " music for those who wear hats ". Vermillion Liesin kitsahtava, eri tyylejä [...]

The Waifs are probably one of the best and most decorated folk/roots rock bands that you’ve never heard of. Coming out of West Australia, the band is made of sisters Vikki Thorn (harmonica, guitar, vocals) and Donna Simpson (guitar, vocals) and they are joined by Josh Cunningham (guitar, vocals). Two years ago they emerged from a three year hiatus to release Sun, Dirt, Water , which they toured on last year. Two shows from that tour were culled into Live From The Union Station , a 14 track live album that combines songs spanning their entire discography with [...]

TREASURE MAMMAL - BLOOD BATH If you're familiar with the Cannibal Cheerleader cult at all you'll know we count ourselves among the biggest devotees of Phoenix's favorite son Treasure Mammal aka Abe Gil. With experimental tendencies wrapped in electronic warbles coated in inspirational by-way-off ridiculous lyrics packaged in a hip-hop candy coating, T. Mammal defies easy definition, as his performance at our Cannibal Cheerleader Blood Bath clearly demonstrated. Blasting through some unbelievably awesome new tracks, Abe left the audience at the Peacock literally speechless. [...]

CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES INTERVIEW New York-based, Jersey-born singer-songwriter Charlotte Sometimes defies easy explanation. A regular on last year's Warped Tour and a favorite of Alternative Press Magazine, some might mistake her music for scenester pop or Dashboard Confessional girl edition until they actually hear the incredibly clever, insightful, and soulful creations that are her songs. Which isn't to say that she's too good for those crowds, more so that she takes their sonic palette and expands them into a delightfully precocious world that's a mixture of darkly humorous alt-rock and catchy pop-hooks. Suffice [...]

global warming www.vermillionlies.com Vermillion Lies recommends using their official press bio but I kind of liked this one better: Vermillion Lies was born in Monterey California late in the year 2004 A.D. Sisters Zoe and Kim Boekbinder both play guitar, sing and make sweet sweet music with found objects, such as vintage typewriters, old gas cans, and even a piece of an F-18 jet. The music is folk with a twist and unique with a capitol 'Q.' Kim and Zoe Vermillion Boekbinder [...]

Vermillion Lies is a circus-cabaret group out of... California? That amuses me to no end, but the music is as authentic as you're going to find anywhere (perhaps there is hope for the West Coast after all). The band's headed by two sisters, both of whom are quite capable singers. I'm not sure which sister sings No Good , but her voice sounded exactly like Katharine Whalen's , the lady who sang for the Squirrel Nut Zippers; this can only be a good thing. While the singing is different on their other songs, it's still good enough [...]
Vermillion Lies combines many of my favorite things, including but not limited to: circus songs, flappers, and strippers (or the more pc term - burlesque dancers). I guess it should come as no surprise that this Californian duo has played with the Ditty Bops, Jason Wembly and Camper Van Beethoven, as they all share a love of campy music. "No Good" has a retro jazz vibe with muted trumpet and equally muted early 1900's jazz vocals. You can buy the new record, Seperated By Birth , here . [...]
