On March 4th, 1791, Vermont became the 14th state to join the Union. After looking around for something to post about it, I decided I couldn't top this description from Wikipedia: "The state is noted for its scenery and dairy products. It is the leading producer of maple syrup in the United States. The state capital is Montpelier, and the largest city and metropolitan area is Burlington. No other state has a largest city as small as Burlington, or a capital city as small as Montpelier." So Vermont is known for its [...]
Vermont's IHOP is the only one in the country, nay the entire chain of restaurants, that serves real maple syrup . IHOP franchises are contractually obligated to serve the four IHOP syrups: butter pecan, blueberry, strawberry and "old fashioned," which is nothing more than maple flavored shit. But that's about to change. "You've got to have real maple syrup in Vermont," said Sam Handy Jr., the restaurant's general manager. Handy said IHOP corporate was "very accommodating" when dealing with the maple syrup request. With a special dispensation, the IHOP, celebrating its [...]

Shortly after Iowa became the third state to legalize gay marriage, Vermont becomes the fourth state to do so - but the first through their legislative body. Nine years after Vermont became the first state to offer civil unions for same sex partners, the state Legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override. [...]

I'm going to get " Bon Iver -ed" by this band, I just know it. Let me explain. When the clever recluse (aka Justin Vernon) wandered out of his log cabin and onto the indie scene, I was asked to give his album a listen and subsequently review it. As an indie reviewer, a lot of what we hear can be hit or miss. After listening to For Emma, Forever Ago , I swore I'd never mind a screaming baby on a 7 hour flight again. I was not a fan, I couldn't write the review. Call [...]

I remember the first time I got this show on tape. It was in high school, 1994, and the tapes probably cost 8 or 9 dollars from this mom and pop store in the city. The shop owner, an old deadhead, would get these n-th generation tapes from his buddy, and sell them in his shop. Well, this one actually sounded pretty good compared to most, and since the dude let me listen to whatever I wanted to, I sort of weeded out the shitty sounding ones before I plunked down the cash. The [...]
Undermind - Phish 2004 Undermind Sessions, The Barn, Burlington, VT Here's an outtake from the also recently leaked 2004 Undermind Sessions; a song that Trey has played (although substantially different) with TAB. Phish never played this song, but it seems very fitting that this will work its way into the Hampton setlists at some point. The lyrics are too spot on and the song is open to all sorts of funky jamming. Undecided, undefined Undisturbed yet undermined Relocated not retired Reprimanded and rewind Mystified and misshapen [...]
You Enjoy Myself - Phish ft. Carlos Santana Stowe Performing Arts Center, Stowe, VT This is one of my all-time favorite YEMs and a great way to kick off your weekend. The peak of this is just massive with both Santana and Trey tearing into it. Still takes my breath away every time I hear it.
Mike's Song - Gordon, Russo and Benevento (GRaB) 12.30.04 - Higher Ground, Burlington, VT Shortly after Phish called it quits in 2004, Mike Gordon teamed up with The Duo , Marco Benevento (keys) and Joe Russo (drums) to form a unique power trio. Here they tackle Mike's Song with some serious intensity and a refreshing look at a nearly twenty year old song. I love the way in which the dynamic adds an urgency to this song, which in later years lost a bit of its force within the full band context. I'm excited [...]

Ah, the bluest of blue states: Vermont. These arrests should pop up everywhere.
Sanity - Phish 2.6.89 - The Front, Burlington VT Check out this fast version of Sanity from twenty years ago today.
Windora Bug > Ruby Waves - Trey Anastasio Band 10.19.08 - Higher Ground, South Burlington VT I am posting this for several reasons. MountainLaura on Twitter requested a Windora Bug. We haven't posted any TAB on Phish Friday yet. Ruby Waves was played once on the fall TAB tour. It's a new song, and maybe one we shall hear @ Hampton or Summer Tour.
YEM - Phish 9.8.88 - The Front, Burlington VT One of my favorite early shows.

Phish will launch its first summer tour in five years with a two-night stand at the Nikon Theatre at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY on June 4th and 5th. Yesterday the band resumed rehearsals, which began in November, in preparation for the upcoming shows. Phish on amazon.com Phish on amazon.co.uk An online ticket request period is currently underway at http://www.phish.tickets.music today.com. Tickets will go on sale to the general public the weekend of January 30th and 31st, 2009. For information on [...]

Burlington, Vermont's Ryan Power recently captivated the Northeast Kingdom in Bushwick with his unique and bizarre one-man electro opera. With several Vermont celebrities on hand - most notably, Heloise of Heloise & the Savoir Faire - Power delivered an entrancing vocal performance, singing beautifully over meticulous and multi-dimensional electro tracks. Power recently made waves when he opened for buzz band Women in Manhattan. The latest LP, Is It Happening? was released in 2007. Ryan Power - Shodi and Dotty (mp3) [...]
Hurricane - Phish 11.19.85 - Memorial Auditorium, Burlington VT I didn't get tickets to Hampton. Guess I will have to wait a little longer. Good thing I have nuggets like these to keep me going. Enjoy.

Nothing more annoying than a college kid yelling at you to save the Earth or crying while watching videos of animals being killed in a student union. Here's Sierra Club's list of the top ten "greenest" campuses . Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT comes in at #1. Above: Sunrise somewhere outside Middlebury. Middlebury readers, help me out with the location? I know you're there. Update: It's Lake Dunmore. Thank you Ms. Hunsberger. MP3: Willie Nelson - Moonlight In Vermont [...]

everybody loves self referencing song titles, especially in the charming ways they extend and prolong the myth-making process ("belle and sebastian", "the story of yo la tengo"), but there's a refreshing absence of that kind of baggage in hallelujah the hills ' own self titled track which featured in last year's collective psychosis begone . the band's name itself is lifted directly off the bizarre 1963 film by adolfas mekas, shot in vermont which the song mentions as the place everybody gets born and dies in. in that sea of simulacral referencing, the song takes apart that impending [...]
When most bands tell you they've had to "grow up in public," they're talking about getting pushed into the spotlight before they've had a chance to find their voice. But for Whittier, California, trio The Dares, who started playing when twin brothers and co-founders Ben (guitar/lead vocals) and Matt (drums/vocals) Peterson were all of 8 years old, the idea was a bit more literal. These boys-to-men literally grew up in public, forming a band when their peers were still dabbling in youth-league sports and landing a major-label contract with Jive Records before they'd even finished high school. Today, as the [...]

"Between Big Black-ack-ack-ack-ack and Shellac-ac-ac-ac-ac, famous record producer Steve Albini led a non-Billy Joel-influenced band called Rapeman. Kind of like Glenn Danzig's Samhain, this short-lived outfit didn't quite hit the watermark as often as his first and third bands. But that doesn't mean they were the worst band ever! I'll have you know that the drummer was the talented Rey Washam (Big Boys, Scratch Acid, Didjits, Helios Creed) and the bassist was the fellated David Wm. Sims (Scratch Acid, The Jesus Lizard)! So even if Steve was experiencing writer's block, how bad could the band be? Essentially Rapeman was the [...]
