Veronica Falls’ second album consists of 13 tracks in 37 minutes of breathless pop. There are the same girl group-inspired harmonies and the same love of fuzzy noisepop but they’ve boosted their sound with some classic influences. When I try to describe Veronica Falls to friends, I often bite my tongue, urgently avoiding the word “twee”. Green Man festival have confirmed that Ben Howard will headline close this year's event. Joining Ben Howard will be Villagers, Stornoway, Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit, Erol Alkan & Daniel Avery, Veronica Falls, Rachel Zeffira, Half Moon Run, Sweet Baboo, Jacco Gardner, Teleman, and Annie Dressner. Twee poppers slip up the second time around. If you're a fan of twee pop (or C86 or whichever term you prefer), you'd understand if I suggested that what makes that style of music work is the lack of derivation from certain stylistic signifiers. The guitars are always crisp and jangly, the rhythms are usually very basic, and the lyrics are lovelorn tales of young people too awkward and romantic to ever experience love. There is something incessantly pleasing about Veronica Falls. Perhaps it's their lack of pretense or lofty goals; perhaps it's the warm harmonies; perhaps it's the head-nodding, rhythmic nature of their gentle, poppy songs. Veronica Falls infamously declared that they "Found love in graveyard", so St Leonard's Church deep in the heart of Shoreditch proved to be a fitting choice of venue for the indie-pop four-piece from London town. They are to embark on a world tour later this month to promote second LP Waiting For Something To Happen that is out now.

Veronica Falls’ sophomore is another set of light and dark pop riding the wave of strummed guitars, Velvet Underground shadows and C86 adoration. And whilst they might not be slouched against a gravestone pining for love, or edging towards the precipice at Beachy Head – they’re still housing a dark passenger or two. Buried Alive’s lyrical content will vouch for that: “Bury me alive, I don’t care if people cry, I wanna get sick, I want to catch everything you’ve ever caught”. Veronica Falls seem to have sloughed off some of the trappings of the C86 scene in the first single from forthcoming album Waiting For Something To Happen. On 'Teenage' they’ve kept the lovely harmonies but upped the jangle-pop element. It’s energetic, with a hint of regret too; that final “it’s alright” sounds like it’s meant to be reassuring rather than euphoric. They continue their darker mood on ‘Talk About You’, sweetening things with heavenly harmonies and a winsomely Byrds-like (and perhaps even Comet Gain-like) jangle but the “is it true/ true about you?” chorus adds a darker [...]

Bei Veronica Falls fällt nach dem ersten Hören gewiss auf, dass die Songs darauf sich nicht vorher als gelungene Singles etablieren mussten. Zumindest aber ist man nicht den TPOBPAH-Weg der Überproduktion gegangen - eher klingt Waiting For Something To Happen ein Stück eleganter und aufgeklarter als das Debüt. First things first. Veronica Falls ’ first album was great fun: twelve medicinal earworms laced with C86-ified sugar, and pretty addictive to boot. As second efforts go, this one here is more than decent, but the trouble with Waiting For Something To Happen is hinted at within the title itself – that selfish bugger known as life has a tendency to happen while you’re sat around waiting for it. Veronica Falls "Teenage" still has me in awe with every new listen. I had high hopes for "Buried Alive" the next track shared from Waiting For Something To Happen . Although the lyrical content about being buried alive isn't the most cheery of subjects, the band keep things sounding cheery throughout. There's not many goth-rockers out there that can make it sound so bright. Waiting For Something To Happen comes out February 12 via Slumberland Records .
