Album Review: Veronica Falls – Waiting For Something To Happen

I'll confess my expectations weren't too high for this, the second LP from London quartet Veronica Falls. Not that I was anticipating anything bad , mind you-the band's self-titled debut from last year was a fun if ultimately forgettable affair-but this is "indie pop," a buzz term which as far as I can tell applies to everyone from St. Vincent to Of Montreal, and with a few notable exceptions (including the two artists I just mentioned) it's primarily characterized by safety. Typically, the melodies get the job done; the instrumentation is simple and unobtrusive; the lyrics concern love and [...]

Veronica Falls: Waiting For Something To Happen

Veronica Falls: Waiting For Something To Happen Veronica Falls’ second album consists of 13 tracks in 37 minutes of breathless pop. There are the same girl group-inspired harmonies and the same love of fuzzy noisepop but they’ve boosted their sound with some classic influences. As the accompanying ‘5 covers EP’ makes clear, their chosen sounds are perfectly sourced. ‘My Heart Beat’ may be second cousin to the first album’s ‘Beachy Head’ (and very fine for all that) but there’s now a luminous jangle – that might be paying homage to the Byrds, the La’s or even the Tyde – throughout, while the Falls demonstrate [...]

Review/Listen: Veronica Falls – Waiting For Something to Happen

Review/Listen: Veronica Falls – Waiting For Something to Happen When I try to describe Veronica Falls to friends, I often bite my tongue, urgently avoiding the word “twee”. While the term has a more severe connotation in the UK, it doesn’t ever grasp what I want to articulate about them. Consequently, I often just say, “give them a listen”. Naturally, it results in getting comparisons to the usual suspects. Regardless of their influences, Veronica Falls stand alone in a sound resurgence that finds them with a title that doesn't fall under the umbrella of their lyrics. Like their debut centered around [...]

Veronica Falls -Waiting For Something To Happen

Album Review: Veronica Falls – Waiting For Something To Happen

A second album called  Waiting For Something To Happen might be asking for trouble. Thankfully, second-album syndrome has bypassed the London four-piece Veronica Falls . On the latest collection, the band delivers a seamless selection of 13 brisk tunes that are instantly hummable. The earlier gothic shackles and preoccupations with death have given way to a gentler exploration of life, as teens give way to twenties. So, despite the literal connection with death, the exhortation to “Bury me alive… I wanna get sick / I wanna catch everything you’ve ever caught” “Buried Alive” is all to do with moving on. If [...]

Veronica Falls - Waiting For Something To Happen ALBUM REVIEW
On this new, sophomore album, Jangle pop outfit Veronica falls works to homogenize their sound, but the issue is that it wasn't really that diverse in the first place. WATCH THE REVIEW

Veronica Falls – Waiting for Something to Happen

Veronica Falls – Waiting for Something to Happen By David Beech February 12, 2013 There seems to be a growing trend whereby bands are allowing their guitars to take a back seat (if not eschewing them altogether) in favour of '80s inspired synth hooks. Thankfully, Veronica Falls are a band that don't fall in to that category. Instead, their second album Waiting for Something to Happen finds itself full of sixties instilled twee-pop in the vein of bands such as Heavenly and to a lesser extent The Vaselines . It's a slight departure away from [...]

Veronica Falls: Waiting for Something to Happen

Veronica Falls - Teenage
Twee poppers slip up the second time around. If you're a fan of twee pop (or C86 or whichever term you prefer), you'd understand if I suggested that what makes that style of music work is the lack of derivation from certain stylistic signifiers. The guitars are always crisp and jangly, the rhythms are usually very basic, and the lyrics are lovelorn tales of young people too awkward and romantic to ever experience love. It's a tried and true formula, and while it...

Veronica Falls – Waiting forSomething to Happen

Veronica Falls – Waiting forSomething to Happen There is something incessantly pleasing about Veronica Falls. Perhaps it's their lack of pretense or lofty goals; perhaps it's the warm harmonies; perhaps it's the head-nodding, rhythmic nature of their gentle, poppy songs. Waiting for Something to Happen embodies the best of indie pop, wrapping you up in its embrace, walking hand-in-hand with you down the sunny riverbank, and listening while you explain your theories about what REALLY happened to Jerry Garcia. This is fun, genuine, unassuming music. The immediate standout element on the record is the vocal work, a duty shared [...]

In Photos: Veronica Falls - St Leonard's Shoreditch, London 08/02/13 Veronica Falls infamously declared that they "Found love in graveyard", so St Leonard's Church deep in the heart of Shoreditch proved to be a fitting choice of venue for the indie-pop four-piece from London town. They are to embark on a world tour later this month to promote second LP Waiting For Something To Happen that is out now.

Veronica Falls: Waiting For Something To Happen

Veronica Falls: Waiting For Something To Happen Veronica Falls’ sophomore is another set of light and dark pop riding the wave of strummed guitars, Velvet Underground shadows and C86 adoration. And whilst they might not be slouched against a gravestone pining for love, or edging towards the precipice at Beachy Head – they’re still housing a dark passenger or two. Buried Alive’s lyrical content will vouch for that: “Bury me alive, I don’t care if people cry, I wanna get sick, I want to catch everything you’ve ever caught”. The vocal of pairing of Roxanne Cliffords’ lush tones and James Hoare’s more dour [...]

Veronica Falls: Teenage

Veronica Falls: Teenage Veronica Falls seem to have sloughed off some of the trappings of the C86 scene in the first single from forthcoming album Waiting For Something To Happen. On 'Teenage' they’ve kept the lovely harmonies but upped the jangle-pop element. It’s energetic, with a hint of regret too; that final “it’s alright” sounds like it’s meant to be reassuring rather than euphoric. They continue their darker mood on ‘Talk About You’, sweetening things with heavenly harmonies and a winsomely Byrds-like (and perhaps even Comet Gain-like) jangle but the “is it true/ true about you?” chorus adds a darker [...]

Stream: Veronica Falls - Waiting For Something To Happen

Veronica Falls – Waiting For Something To Happen

Veronica Falls – Waiting For Something To Happen First things first. Veronica Falls ’ first album was great fun: twelve medicinal earworms laced with C86-ified sugar, and pretty addictive to boot. As second efforts go, this one here is more than decent, but the trouble with Waiting For Something To Happen is hinted at within the title itself – that selfish bugger known as life has a tendency to happen while you’re sat around waiting for it. From the breezy chimes of ‘Tell Me Everything’'s opening riff, it’s clear that things aren’t quite the same this time round. Two [...]

[new]: Veronica Falls – Buried Alive

Veronica Falls "Teenage" still has me in awe with every new listen. I had high hopes for "Buried Alive" the next track shared from Waiting For Something To Happen . Although the lyrical content about being buried alive isn't the most cheery of subjects, the band keep things sounding cheery throughout. There's not many goth-rockers out there that can make it sound so bright. Waiting For Something To Happen comes out February 12 via Slumberland Records .
