We got there too late to see her, but apparently Chelsea Clinton was out at Portland's big gay Red Dress party this past weekend. It was 2000 people dancing with open bars, fire pits, etc and the rule was that you couldn't even come in the door unless you had a red dress on. I haven't worn a dress since the late eighties, but the rabbit located a stunning Lana Turner number for herself and a red velvet bathrobe for me. i cut off the sleeves, belted it, added [...]
Today I relived past glories—most of them other people's, but a few of them mine. Pitchfork.tv started up this week, and the inaugural offerings range from "obvious attempt at positioning the new site" (Tim Harrington from Les Savy Fav interviewing prospective VJs) to "interesting if I cared about the band" (Man Man blowing up a trash can while recording their new album) to "amazing thing I wouldn't have thought would be so great." That last one is the Pixies reunion tour documentary, loudQUIETloud (online for one week only starting today), and it's [...]
"He's like Adam Sandler a little bit, but not as good." -- Tom, refreshing Spike's memory on elderly comedian and white-hott film star Andy Milonakis "You like World War II? What side were you on? You know what side I was on? Allies." -- Tom, joining the Good Guys in the global fight against the Bad Guys "Well, it's kinda the same thing -- buncha jerks livin' all together. Yeh. Stinkin' up the place." -- Philly Boy Roy, refusing to distinguish between New York and New Jersey [...]

This weekly trip down Reminiscence Boulevard has turned up some surprising subjective flippage and floppage. Keep in mind I haven't listened to many of these singles in a decade. Sometimes I expect to feel meh-ness for a single I used to feel meh-ness for but wind up loving it. Often I expect to love a single I used to love and hey, I do. I expected to love hearing this 7" again, but found myself underwhelmed (I still love "TinFoil Star" from the Working Holiday single-of-the-month on Simple Machines though). Am I a moody bastard? Does the single [...]

Friday was a night of surprises at Union Hall. Earlier in the evening, Peter Moren tried out some solo material. But the real treat was after the night's show (including David Kilgour and Euros Childs) was supposed to be over....
"You'll just have to watch me do it, and if the hate of watching me do my thing burns you up, that's your problem." -- Tom, doing it his way "I didn't even know he was a singer. I thought he worked in advertising." -- Tom, discovering the real occupation of Hank Williams, Jr. "Wow, I thought I was good at this -- you're great at this. -- Tom, commending Paycheque for correctly identifying FDR as being deceased in a game of Dead or Alive "Talk [...]

Half-Cocked was the indie rock answer to the Singles Soundtrack back in 1994. The film essentially chronicles a group of bored kids in Louisville (played by various members of Rodan), who steal a van that belongs to their older brother's band (played by the one and only Ian Svenonius), and their vigilante tour for their maverick made-up band. The movie is being released for the first time on DVD, and will be screened in NYC on Feb 13, at the Anthology Film Archives. The soundtrack was available on Matador Records, but is currently out of print. Half-Cocked - Trailer [...]

After the tsunami of nostalgia in my last post, and with it being nearly New Year's eve and all, I thought I'd post the January Working Holiday 7" songs by Scrawl and Versus. Both songs sound wistful and agitated, like how many of us feel on New Year's eve. Best wishes to all of you, whoever you weridos are, in 2007. Side A - Scrawl - 11:59 It's January [3 stars] Side B - Versus - Tin Foil Star [3 stars]
Considering how many times I've mentioned Versus before, it surprises me that I've only ever posted one of their songs. So here's another, to round out the Shangri-Las miniseries. (I'll save you the misfortune of having to listen to Blondie's second go at "Out In The Streets" from 1999's No Exit , which scrubs away all of the charm of the 1975 version.) 2000's Shangri-La was labeled an EP, though it contains "Shangri-La," a Versus song that would appear on their final album the same year. There's a concept to this EP. See if [...]
apologies for the silence - ezarchive doesn't seem to want to let me upload anything from home these days - not sure if it's a mac issue or my rubbish talktalk broadband connection. so i'm making do with whatever i happen to have here at work. and today this means 3 songs fom the stars are insane, a really great straight-up indie rock record by versus. enough said. ::: versus - be-9 ::: versus -
