Being billed as the UK's answer to Kings of Leon immediately lumps a rather large weight on the shoulders of London trio Them Changes. But nevertheless, that seems to be the word about town. Not bad for an act that started its life as Michael Kiwanuka's backing band. They eventually decided to form their own [...]
The crisp, jangly guitar-pop that The Wandas produce recalls the playful power-pop of Teenage Fanclub and Big Star. It is touched with a dose of modern accessibility, with the familiar song structures and sweet harmonious vocal backings bringing to mind '90s alt-rock acts like The Verve Pipe, Collective Soul, and – during The Wandas' more [...]
Check out "Bittersweet Collage," another jam from Sojorn. The track has a real old school vibe, taking the Verve Pipe's "Bittersweet Symphony" and adding tons of old school rappers on top of it. Sojorn complements the mash-up with a funky, electr
So instead of competing in a head-on Twitter battle with @CelebrateBklyn (like they did last year), the folks at Summerstage are going to be tweeting out one act from the official 2011 lineup every day for the next 20 days. The first official @Summerstage Twitter announcement will happen today ( April 1 ) at noon, and will culminate with a full season announcement of over 300 artists at over 100 performances in all five boroughs on April 21st. In the world of unofficial announcements, The Verve Pipe will be playing the Rumsey [...]
Filed under: The Hit List It's textbook: Songs about university life typically have little to do with academia, unless beer, pizza and romantic conquests can be considered courses of study. With a new academic term just around the corner, we've created an advanced curriculum of songs about the best seven years of our lives. [...]

Link: http://2010.aclfestival.com/ba nd/verve-pipe It seems like music festivals are 'getting ironically retro.' As opposed to booking huge bands to be the major draws, they are booking 'ironic 1990s one-hit-wonders' to take the stage. The band The Verve Pipe had one hit called "The Freshmen" which was a popular alt rock song, back in the alt rock 1990s era. Not sure why Austin City Limits booked them. Seems like a questionable decision, like no1 will show up to their stage, or maybe people will 'walk by [...]

Thursday, February 18, 2010 -- The Basement in Columbus, OH Hank here. I've been searching for a great small venue ever since I moved to Columbus in 2008 to see a good show (I wanted a place that reminded me of the now closed Reverb in beloved Cedar Falls). Sure, they have some good venues that I've been to here -- The LC , Schottenstein Center , Nationwide Arena .... There's also been a couple that I have wanted [...]

Singer/Songwriter Jay Brannan is releasing a new cover album this week. The album includes 2 Brannan originals along with 7 cover songs. The album is definitely enjoyable, but nothing to write home about. It's a very simple album, with nothing more than Jay's guitar and his voice. The lead single from the album is his rendition of the 90's hit "The Freshmen", by The Verve Pipe. I like it, but only because the song was great to begin with. He brought nothing new or original to the song, other than his own voice. One song that I do really enjoy [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , New Music Recently, we premiered singer-songwriter Jay Brannan 's first single -- his take on the Cranberries ' 'Zombie' -- from his forthcoming covers album, 'In Living Cover,' out July 7. Brannan is now offering an exclusive listen to the second single off of the record, his cover of the Verve Pipe 's 90s hit, 'The Freshmen.' "'The Freshmen' is a song that was on the radio during my high school days," Brannan tells Spinner. "It's a beautiful and sad [...]

If you've been following me this week on Twitter (my new semi-obsession), you probably read that I listened to Abbot Hayes' song, "Earth Gently Rolls," over 100 times this week. That song is 4:37 long… you do the math. I spent a LOT of time listening to that song. Speaking of Twitter, if you're not following us yet, here's your chance! Since I already wrote about the tune here, it became ineligible for the Top 5 list, which means all the rest of songs got moved up one notch… make sense? Knowing all of that, here are [...]

What level of ego is sufficiently necessary to distinguish our individuality - how much is too much? Societal mores teach us that we should put others ahead of ourselves, but for a myraid reasons, that proves to be an irrelevant task for those with an inflated sense of self. These are the special people the universe and our theme revolves around, the silly solipsistic amongst us. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was cursed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Luckily, not bound by spell, modern day narcissists freely decide to indulge in [...]
Oddly enough the first time I ever hear "The Freshman" was at an open mic night at the UIUC Courtyard Cafe back in the fall of 1996. Some guy was playing the song when I commented to Kris, "That is a really great song," only to hear him reply, "It's a cover." That doesn't change the fact that the song is good. That and I really hate Lenny Kravitz. Really. MP3 | The Verve Pipe - The Freshman [...]

Here is a gift for the 7th day of Christmas....My first (and hopefully annual, and preferably earlier in the season) My Space Holiday Collection Vol. 1. As you may know, I have compiled several My Space tracks. Some of them may be on EPs, CDs, LPs, or online only. As far as I know, these are all online only...I don't recall seeing record names on a lot of these when I found them. You may download the tracks individually or they are zipped for your convenience, along with CD artwork in case you want to [...]
