the dodos | photo by whitperson This is another one of those week's of live music in NYC that requires some serious skills with scheduling and logistics. There are a ton of great shows and there's just not enough time, energy, and cash flow to take them all in. Since I'm still out of pocket, and there's so much to choose from, I'm foregoing my normal highlight reel and just going with the entire list. Call me a slacker if you will, but given all these options, I think I'm mainly just indecisive... [...]

Little Dragon at Bumbershoot 2011 (09/03/11) Photo : Drake Lelane Enjoy the conclusion of Drake's epic Day 1 at Bumbershoot 2011. -ed. Bumbershoot 2011 Day 1 - Part 2 The second half of Saturday started with two of the buzziest of buzz bands in Seattle right now: Shabbaz Palaces - Sub Pop first real hip hop offering, and Pickwick - Seattle's answer to Stax soul, by way of beard folk. Naturally, both were scheduled over the top [...]

I know I say this every week, but seriously everyone, this might be one of the best weeks of live music here in NYC in recent history. We have The Dodos , Cut Copy , Young Man , and Youth Lagoon in town plus multiple shows from Peter Bjorn and John . Enjoy the warm weather early in the week and then Fall-like conditions towards the weekend, and, of course, enjoy yourself some great live music! The Dodos , The Luyas @ Music Hall of [...]

Fruit Bats and Vetiver are playing at the First Unitarian Church on September 14. Doors at 8. The show is all ages. Fruit Bats are promoting their new album Tripper, which came out on August 2. WQHS will be attending the show and conducting an interview, which will be posted in the days following the show.

IVAN: Uncharacteristically clear skies heralded the second day of Outside Lands. Ana Tijoux IVAN: Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux made up for the previous night's lack of hip-hop satisfaction. Taking the stage with a band and DJ, her set combined jazzy, sample-laden grooves recalling Do You Want More?!!!??!-era Roots with a constant yet smooth flow akin to a Ghostface Killah. Rapping mostly in Spanish save for a brief English freestyle, Tijoux alternated from hard-hitting socio-political conscious rhymes like Suve to laid-back [...]

"Who's Bon Iver?" someone shouted during Two Gallants' set. It was the beginning of vague references throughout the night to Justin Vernon's sold-out show at the Orpheum Theater, which may have contributed to the surprisingly sparse attendance at First Avenue's stellar lineup: Fruit Bats , Vetiver , and Two Gallants . Oakland quartet The Mumlers opened, warming up the audience with old-school Motown, jazz standards ("Don't Throw Me Away" sounded suspiciously like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"), and almost jungle rhythmic arrangements. "Thank you for being at this [...]

Julez Baenziger from Sea of Bees talks to The Owl Mag about touring in the UK, her love for Vetiver, and a sparkly new album in the works.

We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… While still remaining active over the last few years, via festival appearances and curated multi-day runs, String Cheese Incident haven't done any sustained touring since announcing a break from the road in 2007. Well, that's all about to change, as the venerable jam act has announced their Roots Run Deep tour , a 10-date East coast run that will kick off on November 25 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in [...]

In the 1960s, San Francisco certainly seemed like the place to be. The hippie counterculture movement of that period, specifically in this city, is something that's popular among historians, musicians, politicians, travelers, ramblers, and all in-between. And that's not a surprise… it was a pretty radical time. Many people today often talk about wishing they could time travel to the '60s to spend a day with Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin. Maybe I've just been hanging around too many hippies lately. Outside Lands marked its fourth year by showing that after all this time, San [...]

30 artists pay tribute to the prolific singer-songwriter

Vetiver at the Great American Music Hall, from the HAD Archive We've been fans of Vetiver ever since we stumbled upon To Find Me Gone some 5-odd years ago. Lucky for us, the band is stil going full speed ahead, delivering their own unique brand of pop infused folk (or is it folk infused pop?), and creating records that not only appeal on first listen, but also unquestionably stand the test of time. [...]

I heard about Pure Bathing Culture over I Guess I'm Floating . The Portland troop makes some soothing lush tracks that would lull you into a harmonious slumber during a Portland winter. A perfect example of this would be in their song "Lucky One." I Guess I'm Floating also mentions that the duo are members of Vetiver. In some ways this makes sense. But I'm excited for some new songs from this new duo. All of the tracks on their BandCamp are quite sweet. Pure Bathing Culture - Lucky One [...]
