For nearly 20 years, Chesnutt sang darkly comic and candid songs dealing with death, vulnerability, and life's simple pleasures. R.I.P. I flew around a little room once. A line from Supernatural. He was just that. He possessed an unearthly energy and yet was humanistic with the common man in mind. He was entirely present and entirely somewhere else. A mystical somewhere else. A child and an old guy as he called himself. Before he made an album he said he was a bum. Now he is in flight bumming round beyond the little room. With his angel voice. Patti Smith [...]

The music world lost a great one on Christmas day. Vic Chesnutt died at the young-punk age of 45. Wheel chair-bound after a car accident at 18, Chesnutt sang with an incredible amount of emotion and humor. He released two albums this year, At the Cut and Skitter on Take Off . You can find the first song, Feast In the Time of Plague , off Skitter below the video. [...]

It has only been one day since Vic Chesnutt died of an apparent suicide at the age of 45, but memorials are already flooding in from friends, collaborators, fans, and new fans of the departed singer/songwriter. "I was at the hospital yesterday when he passed," said Michael Stipe (who produced Chesnutt's first two albums) in a telephone interview with NPR . What will he remember most about Chesnutt? "I think the thing I would have to say is his laugh, and his ability to take a kind of dark moment and twist it and make [...]

By Daniel Brielmaier I first heard Vic Chesnutt in the early 90's. His music was immediately engaging, his lyrics somewhat cryptic, often funny, sad, and unquestionably sincere. His early work had a level of humor and irony that evolved into something deeper and certainly darker. One thing that never changed was his honesty and wit. His music has always been very personal and always from the heart. There was no one like him. Vic was in his own league, and lived in a world of his own rules. He once [...]
Vic was our Keats, our Nina Simone. There will never be another like him. - Guy Picciotto, Fugazi It's funny the things we tend to remember, or I should say, the things I tend to remember. The minutiae. The first time I heard the name Vic Chesnutt was in the Fall of 1995; I was 20 [...]

Last night I read it all over the internet : Vic Chesnutt died ! He was one of those really talented artists that have a solid fan base but never seem to succeed in getting much success, in spite of their sparkling, moving and heart-warming songs. It must have been around 1991, when he released " West of Rome " and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. started spreading the word that this really great artist from Athens, Georgia should [...]

Athens singer-songwriter Vic Chestnutt died yesterday at the age of 45. Paralyzed as the result of a car accident since 1993, Chestnutt has released 12 studio albums over the past two decades, including this year's critically acclaimed At The Cut . I saw the story this morning on MSN . I first heard Chestnutt's about 10 or 11 years ago as part of a compilation called Exposed Roots: The Best Of Alt. Country . On a double CD set that featured several artists I was quite familiar [...]

DOWNLOAD: Vic Chesnutt - Warm (MP3) Vic Chesnutt, RIP What this man was capable of was superhuman. Vic was brilliant, hilarious and necessary; his songs messages from the ether, uncensored. He developed a guitar style that allowed him to play bass, rhythm and lead in the same song -- this with the movement of only two fingers. His fluid timing was inimitable, his poetry untainted by influences. He was my best friend. I never saw the wheelchair--it was invisible [...]
