January 1942: 500 Wehrmacht soldiers found themselves surrounded by the Red Army on the Eastern Front. Suffering in temperatures of –22 Fahrenheit, marching through snowdrifts that at times reached waist high, soldiers began to lie down in the snow to die. Six hours into their escape they claimed they could go no further. Commanders made [...]

Martin wrote a guestpost about a remarkable cover of Françoise Hardy song by former Subway Sect-member Vic Godard: Vic Godard is one of the great lost talents of the post punk. In 1976, he formed Subway Sect at the suggestion of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. After a few album and single releases in the mid-1980s, Godard retired from music and became a postman. In 1990, Godard wrote the song "Johnny Thunders", a tribute inspired by reading an obituary of the New York Dolls guitarist. [...]

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars Honestly, this has been one of our most anticipated records for some time, ever since word hit the streets that members of Crystal Stilts and Comet Gain would unite to create Cinema Red and Blue . While this might just be a brief off-shoot for all those involved, it's got the feel of a classic record that will only get better as time goes by. One of the members that [...]

Vic Godard is the kind of person the term 'cult hero' was invented for. His band Subway Sect debuted in 1976 at the 100 Club Punk Festival alongside the Clash, Pistols and Banshees, and since then he has had by far the most unpredictable and wide-ranging career of any of his punk contemporaries - and arguably the most interesting. The name was a dead giveaway. While those around him were nailing their aspirations to the mast by dubbing themselves Rotten, Vicious or, gosh, even a Strummer, the 18-year-old Victor Napper's new moniker was a nod to the [...]

Vic Godard - "Blackpool" Back in 2001/2002, the brilliant Vic Godard collaborated with acclaimed author Irvine Welsh on an ill-fated musical production, titled "Blackpool." Plagued with problems, the show unfortunately came and went very quickly (only 6 performances), but the songs have proven to be longer-lasting. And thus has Vic recorded and released the new Blackpool EP - 4 songs from the "burlesque and gaudy, vaudevillian, dirty" Blackpool production. Pick it up directly from Vic via his Myspace . And keep an eye out for the [...]

Though I came late to the game when it comes to my appreciation of Vic Godard, I've had a great time tracking down a lot of his back catalog. With a musical style varying wildly from release to release, I've always found myself attracted to Vic's jazz standards-esque songs from the early 802s. In his latest endeavor, Vic teams up with author Irvine Welsh to release this EP from their 2003 musical of the same name. I am first and foremost not a "musicals" fan, but I'm really enjoying this track. Vic also has a new LP coming out October [...]

Vic Godard is an unassuming postman by day, cult hero by night, and now writer of show tunes with Irvine Welsh . Blackpool is the title song from a production that apparently didn't go over too well in the limited run it had in Edinburgh back in 2002. Nevertheless, Godard didn't want the songs he wrote for the production to be forgotten, and has seen fit to release a four song EP called Blackpool. They were all co-written with Irvin Welsh. The title song has a carnival, Bert the Chimney Sweep, Dent May [...]
Blackpool is both the name of Vic Godard's new EP and a song from the EP. Vic Godard is a solo artist who used to be in a punk band known as Subway Sect right around the time of The Sex Pistols. He is released his new EP Blackpool after writing the songs with Irvine Welsh a few years back for the musical of the same name. The song "Blackpool" itself is a winner. Really eccentric and catchy. This was a pleasant surprise on my lazy Saturday. [mp3]: Vic Godard - [...]

Here ya go, something for the weekend. It's the March installment of the the Finest Kiss Basementcast. If this is going to become a regular thing, I guess I should get a theme song and some back ground music for the talking parts. A real microphone might be nice too, one of those big foamy ones would be perfect. Maybe I should get some advertisers too. Naah, I kind of like the furnace as my background noise, at least until I sell out. basementcast : download [...]
