The Supergroup and The Legion of Vicky Cryer

If you're a musician, nothing tops kicking it with your friends and spending hours creating music together into the wee hours of the morning. Jason Hill, frontman of the rock band Louis XIV, wanted a place where he could pursue this pastime with his pals. So, in the spring of 2009, ...

Vicky Cryer: Is it a supergroup?

Vicky Cryer "The Synthetic Love of Emotional Engineering " live at the Troubadour
Does Vicky Cryer count as a supergroup ? It's got Killers bassist Mark Stoermer, Muse drummer Dominic Howard, ex-Jamiroquai bassist Nick Fyffe and ex-Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch and New York Dolls singer David Johanssen involved, which makes it supergroupy. But it's mostly about Louis XIV's Jason Hill, which makes it feel more like a side-project where the session guys are more storied than the heart. Apparently there's a record due out in a matter of days. In the meantime... there's this: -- Visit No Rock [...]

Ears Wide Open: Beat Club

Ears Wide Open: Beat Club Beat Club has the beats, by golly, and they don't sound like they came from some computer application. The new indie-dance trio is a little bit punk, a little bit garage and a heftier amount of disco, with ’80s-vintage bass lines rolling under scratchy guitar riffs. Beat Club is the new collaboration from ex-Low Vs Diamond bandmates Anthony Polcino (who's also done great things as Soft Pipes ) and Jon Pancoast, along with Jeff Kite, who's played with Julian Casablancas' band and the Jason Hill project Vicky Cryer. An EP is tentatively planned for the fall. [...]

Vicky Cryer: Louis XIV’s Jason Hill gathers talented friends for new band’s first SF show

Vicky Cryer: Louis XIV’s Jason Hill gathers talented friends for new band’s first SF show Expensive Love by Vicky Cryer There are two foremost things you need to know about Vicky Cryer . The first is that the Los Angeles dance-rock collective is not an all-star band. Though it (currently) features the drummers from Muse and Nine Inch Nails, the bassist from The Killers, Julian Casablancas’ keyboardist, and several other notables, this is a band owned solely by Jason Hill; guitarist, singer/songwriter, and leader of the defunct Louis XIV. The second is that despite the feminine name, Vicky Cryer is [...]

Ears Wide Open: Vicky Cryer

Ears Wide Open: Vicky Cryer With his band Louis XIV in the deep freeze after three albums and thousands of miles of touring, singer-guitarist Jason Hill needed a change. The San Diegan moved to L.A., bought a house in Laurel Canyon, built a recording studio he calls "Ulysses" and retreated to "a life of staying at home and making records," he says. As new tunes began to take shape — not unlike Louis XIV's material, songs about love, sex and their related currency — Hill called upon friends old and new to help out with the project. And Vicky Cryer was [...]
