Over the last few months Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers have become a bit of viral video sensation thanks in part to their Van Sessions series that features the roots-infused, blue-eyed soul act covering everyone from the Grateful Dead to Madonna to Bobby Darin. WHY : The Original lineup of the Flecktones reformed recently for the first time in nearly two decades, putting out the band’s first album of new material in six years with Rocket Science. Piano/harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy (aka “The Man With Two Brains”) steps back into the band, filling the void left by sax man Jeff Coffin, who has had his hands-full on the road as a full-time touring member of the Dave Matthews Band.

Two of our favorite bassists joined forces last night at the Belly Up in Aspen, where Vic Wooten of The Flecktones sat in with the Mike Gordon Band for the Phish original Meat, a cover of Sailin' Shoes by Little Feat and the Tom Cleary-written Crumblin' Bones. Wooten has a long history with Gordon, having first guested with Phish for most of the second set in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 21, 1993 and then again on July 9, 1997 in Lyon, France.
