'Unbeast The Leash' is 4 years old and noise merchants Videohippos have been ever so quiet in the interim. Well, that's what I thought until I ran into a free download on last.fm which informed me that the Baltimore act had put out a split CD with Sewn Leather (how could it be a split then?) just last year. This time they've dispensed with the vocals (if you could ever call them that, see video below) and it does take from their apocalyptic approach. Thankfully though, despite the passing of words they retain their ability to rustle melody from a [...]

Opening night at Whartscape , and Future Islands was about to play a rare acoustic set. They had only performed their songs acoustic once before, at an art gallery earlier that month. "We practiced late that night and early this morning," singer Sam Herring confessed. Yet the acoustic approach to their music left people talking, and months later, the band released Undressed, an acoustic EP of a few of their songs from In Evening Air. The songs, featuring guitar, cello, and other instrumentation by guest friends, are highly poignant, adding more of a sense of [...]

So, as of this here post no mysterious benefactor has emerged to finance a last minute jaunt down to Austin. Hence, I am not going to SXSW . I already went through Part 1 of the Unofficial SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artists torrent , you can see the results of that... here . Here is a selection of mp3s from bands featured in Part 2 . This time I was able to whittle down the list to 28 songs. Some of these tracks will probably be familiar to you, while others not so much. Listen. [...]
Affiliated with Wham City (Dan Deacon's b-more crew), Videohippos are a psych-pop band who have been recording new material according to their MySpace . They have an upcoming split 7" with Sewn Leather , another with Hot Lava , and their second official full-length, all due out in 2010 it sounds like. Their first was Unbeast the Leash (2007) and it was really good although I found some of the dissonance/drone to be pretty annoying sometimes. You can download some tracks over at their website . [...]

MP3: Indian Jewelry - Lapis Lazuli from untitled 2010 release ( World Premiere! ) Indian Jewelry are students of drone and psychedelia. Formed by Erika Thrasher and Tex Kerschen in 2002, the logistics of this ever-evolving collective are baffling, seeming to expand and contract as frequently as the air we breathe. With a rotating cast of members [...]

Recommended Show: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2009 GROOMS, VIDEOHIPPOS, & more @ DEATH BY AUDIO 49 South 2nd Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $7, 8PM I've been wanting to recommend a show from the You Are Here: A Maze installation taking place at Death by Audio ever since it kicked off a week ago. Other shows just kept getting in the way (despite some amazing lineups in the DbA space). Tonight, with performances from Grooms and Videohippos, it's clearly the place to be. Son Volt @ The Fillmore Olof Arnalds @ Union Pool [...]

I just got back from the Box Elders show at Monster Island Basement, and it was pretty good. If you want to see photos and read my review, however, you'll have to check Break Thru Radio on Friday. In the meantime, I'm recommending this show for tomorrow because Grooms (originally Muggabears) is a weird, noisy rock band that's been around for a few years now, and may finally be achieving their potential. This show is part of Death By Audio's maze art installation, so you may have to navigate walls and barriers in order to actually see the [...]

Walking into the MICA North Ave. parking lot was like stepping into an alternate universe to me. Accustomed to the outstandingly complete normalcy of Carroll County living, everything involved at Saturday's Whartscape was akin to alien scenery in my eyes. If anyone attending knew who I was or what I looked like-and you probably didn't, you crazy ass MICA kids, I apologize for probably having stared just a tad too much. Whispers For Wolves : The third or fourth thing I laid my eyes upon, and I saw plenty, [...]

MP3: Videohippos - Narwhals Photo credit: Josh Sisk (Whartscape 2007) It's surprising to me how few people know of Videohippos . I mean, they've been around the block more than a few times; they've been doing the Wham City thing since anyone can remember, not to mention their thumbs up from Pitchfork . And from Stereogum . And Oh My Rockness . Even so, if you ask your typical college-age trendy-type who's hip to what's indie, they probably haven't a clue about the [...]

Here are the first 130 or so bands that will be playing at Whartscape in Baltimore this year. Some of The End of Irony's favs will be playing, including Future Islands , Adventure , and Ear Pwr . Tickets are going on sale at noon on Monday, June 29. Though tickets will be sold to individual shows and days, the Mega Pass will be available for all days for $45 (a fantastic deal and to quote Whartscape, "The strength of the mega-pass is truly mega"). Check out whamcity.com for more info or below for the [...]

The show at Market Hotel last night was easily, by far, the most fun night of music I've had so far this year. In the words that I used to attempt to lure my friends out to Bushwick, the line-up was sick nasty awesome. The bands were all uniformly great. But more than that, the general feeling in the air last night was perfect. Unlike my Wavves experience at Market Hotel, the place wasn't filled to the brim with drunk sixteen year olds. Sure, there were drunk sixteen year olds, but there was also an incredibly [...]

What a great vibe and great show this past Saturday at Floristree. I walked in to a fully-ramped Videohippos set that had more than motivated the healthy-sized audience with some stellar, dance-ready hooks and decently complementary neon-colored projections. The most noticeable thing was how few familiar faces I noticed scanning the throbbing throngs and bobbing heads. The first show that felt like a summer show for me, and there were all kinds of fresh, young faces complete with the energy that accompanies such a blissful clean slate. Double [...]

I am just writing to remind you all that the new postpostpunknoguitaronlybass Double Dagger album is now available ( here and here for example). More is just as amazing as their last effort , but this time there is more of a wallofsoundthing going on. This is an album that requires the volume be turned up. This is an album that requires you to lose your shit. Right along with Power Move , Dim Light , I Blame You [...]

>> Faux Hoax is Danny Seim of Menomena , John Askew of Tracker and Dave Allen of Gang Of Four (and, of course... Pamplemoose ). They have some streaming remixes over @ their muxtape , but no mp3s for downloading just yet. >> The Needle Drop posts about the worst album covers of the year (so far)... here . >> Download the new Spanish Prisoners EP over at Bandcamp ... here . The download is 128k. You can download the [...]

Tonight in Baltimore the Hexagon has an allstar show with Video Hippos, Lizz King, Bagger Vance, Lemmy and Sean. Over at the Ottobar there's another show of note with Los Campesinos! and Titus Andronicus. Down in DC the Black Cat has a fab event with Nightmare Of You, US Royalty, and Bottle Up & Go. Up north in Philadelphia Kung Fu Necktie is where it's at because they have The Soft Pack (formerly known as The Muslims) and The Browns (the band not the team). Also in Philly don't forget about The Rosebuds at [...]
