Photos by Carrie Johnston A prominent downtown venue on a warm Saturday attracts all species of night crawlers. Due to this, nothing exclusive or particular about VietNam playing at Dante’s on such a night struck me. The noncommittal crowd was thin to begin with, then fattened when VietNam started, and mostly disappeared before the end. Save for the second opener, Small Arms, the whole experience- the crowd, the music, the low red lights, the air… was like the low hum of a car engine on a three-hour highway jaunt. The most desolate moments [...]

A news reporter for VITV in Hanoi required a second take after somebody forgot to pull the parking brake on the company SUV. Proof is in the the b-roll. h/t Say OMG Follow @BrianAbrams

I picked up a new toy a few hours before my show. My bike had been in the shop for a few days with a broken spoke and to get a new chain and cassette (the latter of which was a special order item), and I decided to try out a 2012 model Trek. Ended up using my old bike as a trade in and coming home with the new ride pictured above. With this kind of reckless spending, I needed a garage/psychedelic rock kind of night. Here's my playlist for [...]

A fter six years of working on film scores in Los Angeles, Michael Gerner has returned to VietNam … where he can steep his creative imagination in banh mi, water marionette shows, and endless rivers of Tiger Beer. Since he’s returned to VietNam, he has birthed an album called An A.merican D.ream , which presumably laments the glories and woes of his stint in, comparatively pho-deprived, California. …Kidding! VietNam is the ultimately impossible-to-find-on-Google name of Gerner’s band. What it has to do with the country of Vietnam is not entirely clear. We’ll have to ask him. Anyway, VietNam-the-band’s most recent [...]

The band played a record release show on Thursday (2/28) with Hector's Pets and TV Baby also on the bill. Since Vietnam graced the FADER #42 cover back in December 2006, group leader Michael Gerner took some time out to breathe, shave his beard, and gather new band members for a triumphant 2013 return. A ... read more

by Bill Pearis Brooklyn band Vietnam were a fixture of the '00s local scene but went quiet a few years ago to the point where some may have wondered if they still existed. Main man Michael Gerner reactivated the name last year as a six-piece, and has put the finishing touches on a new Vietnam album, an A.merican D.ream , which is out February 26 via Mexican Summer. You can check out cover art and "Kitchen Kongas" from [...]

Here at C=T , we have been unabashed fans of Vietnam since they were reppin' the cover of " Fader " almost over five years ago. The stoner rockers create music for the Amendment 64 (btw, Governor Hickenlooper just signed it into law today) crowd as if Lou Reed had gone astray and decided to go the way of Haight/Asbury instead of NYC. Mexican Summer is releasing "A.merican D.ream" February 26, 2013. Look for a slew of tour dates next year, but all we have is a NYC date at the Mercury Cafe February 28 [...]

(Photo: David Black) Ah, the almighty Vietnam – doctors of the most fried-out side of psychedelia, experts at garbled, vomited sermons and widescreen scientists of real-deal rock 'n' roll that doesn't hide behind anything other than its majestic intentions. Yes, Michael Gerner is back with a new single, "Kitchen Kongas," that absolutely rips, commanding you to 'walk with the devil' and featuring a fiery vamp, battering-ram hand drums and a harmonica solo that might make you freak the hell out. You can grab the 7-inch now and find this one [...]
