Here are three less obvious choices 3) Christmas Song - Dave Matthews Band. From the Platinum Christmas album which also contains two other really good Christmas originals by Dido and R Kelly. Maybe I'll post those next year. 2) O Tannenbaum - The Vince Guaraldi Trio. An essential purchase at this time of year is the [...]

Vince Guaraldi Trio, "O Tannenbaum"

Fridays 'round these parts typically see gobs of remixes. Today didn't seem right posting a "Friday Remixes," partly due to the fact that this entire weekend most people will be celebrating Christmas with family, friends and loved ones. I plan on doing the bulk of my shopping today and my procrastinating has taken me as far out as possible. No matter how hard I try to fight it every year, I fall into the same trap. Saturday will be full of football from morning till nighttime. I'm in the championship game of my fantasy league, so I'll be [...]

It's about time that I posted a Christmas song on the blog this year. Here's Woods ' version of the Vince Guaraldi Trio classic "Christmas Time Is Here." It doesn't deviate too much from the original, but Woods naturally give it a weirdo freak folk update. If there's one singer with a voice that's high and squeaky enough to replicate the children's choir of the original, it's Woods singer Jeremy Earl. If I was feeling picky I would complain about them changing "Christmastime" to be two words, but it's free music, so I shouldn't [...]

I was back in Ohio for Thanksgiving, and the radio stations had already been playing holiday music for two weeks. That's a good month before the actual day. We're not going to put you through that vigorous of a regiment. I mean, I love Christmas, but I can only hear "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" so many times before I kind of think "Mommy" is a whore. But,the season of joy is now fast approaching, so lets kick it in to holiday mood high-gear. Starting with, no doubt, the best Christmas song of all time-
Joe writes: I once flew to San Francisco on Christmas Day with a friend so he could meet up with a girl for only the second time. On arrival she presented him with A Charlie Brown Christmas Album by The Vince Guaraldi Trio - an American institution that is little known in the UK . Skip forward some years: they are married with a kid and O Tannenbaum from the album is featured on a UK TV advert (for a games console or something like that). The album features jazz-lite versions of [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Its a difficult task to keep up with any genre especially if you're always in need of something fresh, the post classical realm is by far one of my favorites that I don't dig deep enough in and sit with an album. I usually have a stash of artists that I rely on to get me what I want, Jacaszek is one of them, if you can't tell by his name he's Polish which makes me favor him since i'm from there. Always on the darker side yet doesn't [...]

Over the holidays, we're looking back at some classic Christmas albums taking some track by track and just digging on others. There are seminal moments in the life of a child and it is not uncom... Continue reading "Classic Christmas: Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas" >

Bond: The Paris Sessions , the second release from pianist Gerald Clayton as leader, features bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Justin Brown to round out this talented trio of emerging jazz artists. Recorded at Studio de Meudon in Paris, "Bond" is a wonderful album where Clayton, Brown and Sanders not only breathe new energy into popular standards, but also transform new music into instant jazz classics. On "If I Were A Bell," Clayton gives us a fresh interpretation of the song. Although it was written by Frank Loesser for the Broadway show [...]
It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since Over The Rhine issued its debut album. The Ohio-based husband-and-wife duo of multi-instrumentalists/vocalis ts Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist have marked the anniversary with new album The Long Surrender, which was produced by Joe Henry at his Garfield House home studio and features an assortment of [...]

Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmastime Is Here Joan doesn't like Christmas , Noah generally doesn't like interruptions in public transportation , and I don't like losing my car to a burial of snow . But I like the Vince Guaraldi Trio. [ Buy pretty much the only worthwhile Christmas alum .]

Vince Guaraldi Trio : Christmas Time is Here [ purchase ] Sarah McLachlan ft. Diana Krall : Christmas Time is Here [ purchase ] I've got a few minutes before dinner, just time enough for the lowest of low-hanging fruit on our weekly theme. If you've never heard the soundtrack to the 1965 TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas --- welcome to planet Earth! Vince Guaraldi, in the mid-60's a hot [...]
We are all starting to feel a little more jolly as the season approaches so, in light of that, and as a reprieve from list-making , we asked two of our staff to curate a Christmas-themed cassette for the season. Side A is provided by Simon Roche and features the track from the now-ubiquitous (and rightly so) A Charlie Brown Christmas , that notorious reindeer lover Billy Corgan is joined by a 45-piece string ensemble on a Smashing Pumpkins holiday song from 1997, Yellow Magic Orchestra's Ryuichi Sakamoto, some Danish cheer and Low. [...]

I can't get enough Christmas music right now. The Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack with Vince Guaraldi Trio is one of my favorites. - Joel Vince Guaraldi Trio - "O Tannebaum"
Can you believe that we don't even have our Christmas tree up yet? Why? Well, my wife decided that she wanted to paint the dining room (where the tree goes) before we put it up so I've been helping her paint all weekend long. If not for the painting, this post would have gone up a day earlier. Anyhow, here are some jazzy Christmas songs for your enjoyment, but don't forget there's more! Here are the links to Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , and Day 4 of this series. [...]
