The last time we heard from The Vinyl Skyway, it was the charming alt-country strummer "Elvis Costello" . It was much to my chagrin upon discovering the song, to learn that the band had split ways since recording. Thankfully, The Vinyl Skyway has returned from hiatus, and even more thankfully have come back with the new album Return of the Dead Surfer . The entire recored is an absolute Sunday morning album full of beautifully-crafted pop songs who's bright guitars and sweet vocals point directly to Big Star. Personal highlight "Misty Morning Fog" is [...]

October means we're happily knee-deep in baseball, surrounded by seasonal pumpkin ales, and, regrettably, wrist-deep in the slimy insides of jack-o-lanterns. Music has been my quiet oasis. I figure it's high time I stop futzing over my autumn mix and share it already. The fall mix is one of my favorites to make. It's why I make you guys these seasonal mixes: as everything in the natural world [...]

Here is what little can be found on the band Vinyl Skyway; they were a band for five years, released 2 full length albums, and then broke up in 2008. When I first heard the song "Elvis Costello"- I immediately thought this must be an old Wilco bootleg. The voice draws obvious comparisons to early Tweedy, and the band is warm and worn in. It's a simple song with poignant lyrics about breaking windows, ratting on your friends, smoking bowls, and listening to- yep, Elvis Costello. It's a song that would fit perfectly on Being There , or really [...]
"Because you like Coldplay." OK, we kid, we kid. Kind of. Chris Martin gets a big chuckle out of the Filligar video. Coldplay takes a lot of heat for being such a harmless band (and that might be their biggest fault) but for all their wonk, it's pretty cool that they are allowing WFNX (alt-radio station here in Boston) choose their opening act . I mean, we could really *screw* them, right? Here are the bands up for the opening slot [...]
