Violens (a heady mix of "violence" and "violins") is celebrating the recent re-release of its self-titled debut EP with a couple of free remixes. The first is a reinterpretation of the EP's opening track, "Already Over" by Kurt Heasley of Lilys. Heasley's given the track a little more bounce by placing more emphasis on the song's bass groove and beat. Caroline Polacheck of Chairlift has also created a video remix for the original featuring a heavy dose of a young George Michael. Watch it here . Stay tuned for remixes from MGMT, RAC, Subtle People and Lansing-Dreiden.

Ooh Ahh Cantora! OOH HA Cantora!
Enjoy Caroline Polachek's interpretation of 'Already Over' in the clip below. MP3: Violens - Violent Sensation Descends

For their forthcoming album, the Lemonheads have embraced the twin peaks of their career by going for a full-on covers album entitled VARSHONS . Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes produces, and Gen X poster girls Liv Tyler and Kate Moss make vocal contributions. Here Liv and Ev take on "Hey, That' No Way To Say Goodbye," verses alternating between Dando's stately tenor and Liv's whispery bits, while Gibby fleshes out the far background with wind wooshes and flangey, didgeridooey guitars. From " Spectator & Pupil " to one of last year's single best pop songs "Violent Sensations Descend," etc., past Gummy Awards Live participants Violens are such an appealingly frosty band that it's easy understanding the mindset behind Lilys decision to change the title of the New York four piece's ice-mentioning "Already Over" to "Already Oslo" in the course of their remix. The makeover remains as crisp as the original, but you get extra percussion and additional layers. It's part of a series of remixes from Violens' debut that will appear as a free digital EP along with [...]

In a slow SXSW week, Drake recommends the latest from Wavvves (who is definitely drumming up some buzz around here, but isn't really my thing) and some sweet reissues from 60's cult icon Scott Walker . My personal picks of the week would probably be " Rearrange Beds " from Australian pop duo, An Horse and the "V" EP by Brooklnyn art rockers, Violens . -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 03.17.09 It's the week of SXSW, so it's a mostly quiet week [...]

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Thanks in part to a weekend that didn't end until Monday night, our list for this week lacks as many links and artists being highlighted as we would normally like. After spending the weekend up in Boston and taking in the sights (see photo above) and sounds (bagpipes) of one of the country's largest parades, we just couldn't pull ourselves to do anything other than relax. Please let us know if any artists from this week jump out to you. Cheers! MP3: Superdrag - Sold [...]
New Joshua James is a surprise to me. I haven't heard a thing about it, despite being a big fan of his . Aside from that, the new Wavves album is out. Pitchfork's been squeeing like a preteen about them since January. Sean didn't like the album much , but I've been listening to it too and it might be a sleeper hit for me this year. There's also the new Superdrag release, which we may or may not be streaming for [...]

In just over 36 hours I will be in Austin, Tejas for my first SXSW Music Festival. I may be a bit disoriented from my way early AM flight, blinking the bright Texas sunlight. I'll be planning my musical attack, my strategy for eating BBQ and pacing my drinks. Marathon, not sprint, etc etc. I was up til past 1 last night trying to scrap together some loose semblance of a schedule of bands I would be interested in seeing. Here are five brand new ones that I've not written about before, but that my preliminary scientific midnight [...]

Indie rock quartet Violens (pronounced vy-lenz) are a Miami-based group who are releasing their self-titled debut tomorrow. The four-song set showcases the band's catchy pop sound, a new take on the classic Brit-rock style of the sixties and seventies. In fact, it would be easy to mistake the group for hailing from across the sea, as they conjure the spirit of bands like The Zombies and combine it with a post-punk vibe that immediately caught my attention. The songs on Violens are quite good, enough so to make me wish there was more to love than just [...]

Holy shit you guys. We have to make it known that from this Saturday forward, there is no place in the city to be other than at Tribeca Grand. A juggernaut has been unleashed upon Gotham by the guys of GBH in the form of a party rife with live performances, DJ sets, and kids ready to rave up to the best tunes electro and pop have to offer. There was a lead-off DJ set from Alex English , a 45-minute My Bloody Valentine-meets-Goes Cube wall of sound performance from Violens , and back-to-back guest spots [...]

via Sonic-Exposed When David asked me if I had heard Violens , I replied with an immediate, "Of course." But, when I searched through my library, I realized that I actually had none of their music. Then, how the hell did I know the name Violens? It slowly dawned on me that I may have seen them perform before. Don't think that my lack of memory implies that they are not worth knowing, because I'm currently very addicted to a couple of Violens songs. One of [...]

Sobreviveu?

We love everything that we've heard from Violens up to this point. At times, they can cover their pop sensibility in reverb, or, as in the attached song, they can clean it all out to reveal everything beautiful about their sound. Here's to more great tunes from yet another promising band from New York. You can listen to more songs at their Myspace Page , or buy their first EP. Download: Violens - Doomed [MP3]

Violens (pronounced Vy-lens) were brought to my attention by Transparent Magazine . I popped down to the Barfly that week to catch the group play with Boy Crisis at Us and Them and they left the lasting impression out of the two. Take nothing away from Boy Crisis, their myspace description amuses me greatly, Violens just happened to be what I needed at the time. Their sound is a lot easier to seperate from the sound of 2008/9. Built around a sturdy rhythm section, nothing too flashy I might add. Just [...]

More music posts! Overdue on this here blog. This song's great. Referred to me by a man named Razzak. Sounds kind of 60s-ish British psychedelic meets Voxtrot, or something. Better descriptions welcome in comments! I'm not going to say anything about the band, other than that they're supposedly pronounced VY-lens, in protest of the fact that they think that having a MySpace page is a substitute for having a normal website.
