Today's music was raised by wolves. Enjoy. : Wampire - Trains : I really dig this song. It's a breezy, charming pop effort that I imagine will turn the majority of you into Wampire fans. Here's hoping their upcoming LP has more of the same. Curiosity is due out May 14 via Polyvinyl . : Vampire Weekend - Ya Hey : I'll give it up to Vampire Weekend , they're upcoming album is looking like it will be one of the year's best pop releases. Every song released so far [...]

Salford is to Manchester pretty much what Leith is to Edinburgh - the scummy port town which is close enough to be pretty much part of the city, but still maintains a separate identity. And indeed Salford may be a good way behind Leith in this aspect, but it too seems to be slowly becoming nicer and nicer, and shrugging off some of its rough image. Salford has a very long way to go I suppose, but there does seem to be a fair bit of decent arty stuff happening down there at the moment, which tends to be how [...]

I often wonder how tiny musicians (in terms of fanbase/budget/etc. not actual physical size) existed before the digital revolution. With the advancement of home recording and the inevitable democratization of the means of production, modern music consumers are continually bombarded by records of all qualities; good and bad. At times I despair of the situation I find myself in, as the signal-to-noise ratio is so skewed by the vast hulking mass of terrible records, but at other times I rejoice, for back in the good ol' days there's simply no way I would have ever heard a record by an [...]

The Gnomecast could have been called many, many things. It could have been called The Widecast after Wide Days, the Edinburgh-based music convention I attended in the middle of last week, and from the showcases at which two of the songs on this podcast were chosen. Equally, it could have been called the Witchcast, due to the fact that the vicious old Fucker of Working Britain is now a thing of the past. In fact, now that I think about it, a whole podcast dedicated to anti-Thatcher songs would probably have been a distinct possibility, but my feelings [...]

I broke the rules this week on my very unoriginally titled radio show on KSVR Mount Vernon. The Indie Music Show featured a few tracks that are, quite distinctly, not even close to being indie. And one of them kicked off the show. It's the new track by David Bowie called "Where Are We Now?" Shortly thereafter, I crossed the ocean for a set from France, where I played a track by famed singer and Masculin Féminin actress Chantal Goya and another by Serge Gainsbourg. Still, there [...]

The time has come to ramp up training for the STP (Seattle to Portland bike ride). Last weekend, I took a ride out toward La Conner along my normal route, which takes me down McLean. This particular road is on the path toward the famous Skagit Valley Tulips, and being in the middle of the Tulip Festival, traffic was anything but light. It's satisfying, passing a line of 30+ cars, stopped due to heavy traffic. You don't get that much in the country. On with the music... Receiving the [...]

We finally say goodbye to January, and wave hello to February. This week starts off slowly with a highly anticipated show at the Crocodile with the very talented Alabama Shakes and guests Quiet Life . If you can't get into that one, check out The Family Crest , who wrap up a month-long residency in Seattle, with Valley Fair , and Brite Lines at the Tractor. On Thursday, a couple of KEXP favorites: Nada Surf and Say Hi also play at the Tractor, and on Friday, Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra, [...]

"The Secret Plume" is the latest video from Seattle artist Virgin Of The Birds and it features early video of some very unique dancers. In fact, we saw a similar dancer in The Robot Ate Me's video for "On Vacation", which was eerie and surreal. Here, however, it complements Jon Rooney's melodies, which are often timeless. The video, under public domain, is footage "from La Creación de la Serpentine (La Creación de la Serpentina), directed Segundo de Chomón, Pathé Frères (1909)" as stated on the Abandoned [...]

"They Wake" is a single released from Jon Rooney of Seattle based band, Virgin of the Birds (named after a translation of a Salvador Dali painting). The band have been releasing music since 2007 and Fugitive Works is the fourth home recorded EP to be released for free since 2009. Check out "They Wake" below along with the music video shot between San Francisco and Las Vegas on Super 8 film. They Wake

Seattle artist Virgin Of The Birds sent me "They Wake", a fantastic song from his new free EP, Fugitive Works . Jon Rooney is the artist behind Virgin Of The Birds, and he has released a bunch of EP's for free from his label Abandoned Love Records . "They Wake" is a song that will distill your heart of all pain and suffering from the past week, and replace it with love and joy. It's a warm compassionate song that is doing me tons of good right now. Try it out below, and download [...]

Jon Rooney from Virgin of the Birds (and Abandoned Love Records) goes about his business pretty damn discreetly, from the distinctly laissez-faire tone of his publicity emails, to the gently confident nature of his music. This, as will be immediately obvious from the very first note, is not the sort of music to get a stupid haircut and demand attention for its greatness. It reminds me of the Scottish Enlightenment in some ways; particularly in the slow-burning, lush confidence with which it so unhurriedly goes about its business. Jon now has four of these beautiful little [...]

There's something about the music Virgin Of The Birds creates that is seemingly timeless. It's absolute, in the present, yet it hints of a time long past. Perhaps it's the simplicity of the songs, with poppy guitar melodies and an ever consistent percussion. The songwriting is where complexity dominates; a lyrical prowess filled with story-like mystery. This mystery has dominated the library Virgin Of The Birds has built. And you can hear it thoughout "They Wake". So, too, can you see [...]

Umm.. nada, absolutely nada this week. Not one single gig I would be likely to go to myself, which is a bit unusual. Still, I am going to Glastonbury for the first time, so this not entirely a bad thing from my perspective. As a good friend of mine pointed out: 'Giving up your job and then off to Glastonbury - it's like the end of your adulthood' . And he's not far wrong. Oh yes, giving up my job, did I mention that? Well yes, as of Wednesday I will be a full-time Toad. Or ToadPRO [...]

Words and music by Jon Rooney, who records as Virgin Of The Birds. To begin with a broad shot of dubious hyperbole, I declare that things have never been better than they were 1973. By things I mean popular art: art that was neither conventionally entertaining by modern tastes nor particularly coherent yet existed in some sort of hazy, avocado mainstream rather than the academy or the crevices of marginelia (sorry, Jazz). The early 1970's, thanks to the persistent adolescent myopia of Baby Boomers and their now five decades of self-lionization, are often derided [...]
![Virgin Of The Birds: Banquet Years [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2399609_lg.jpg)
Banquet Years is the third EP in a digital-only series of releases by Seattle-by-way-of-Austin's Jon Rooney, the Virgin Of The Birds mastermind and proprietor of Abandoned Love Records. The album, containing five songs, finds Rooney further expanding his capabilities and musicianship. Opening track "Let Me Be Your Bride" demonstrates his folk-versatility, from the 60s-era bass guitar bop to the borderline experimental tinkering on the keys. Not to mention, the wicked guitar-work radiating in emotive psychedelic hypnosis. From Virgin Of The Birds' early days, [...]
