![[SXSW One Helluva Recap: Day Four]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1652418_lg.jpg)
One Helluva Recap: Day Four in Photos March is definitely one month I always look forward to, and I contribute that entirely to SXSWeek - Austin's favorite time to show some love to film, music, and technology. Buried into that schedule are four days dedicated to music, and it is in those four days that I truly live. Given here is my perspective of South By Southwest. SXSW One Helluva Recap: Day Four (artist name leads to site & all songs are right click - save as): [...]

From what I understand, there aren't many over-the-top parties/events that typically take place at SXSW on the first day (Wednesday). So it was decided that my travel mates and I would forgo that wretched early-morning trek to Baltimore's lovely airport and leave a little later, thus getting us in a little later. Of course the one year this happens is the year that all that changes and there's tons of great things happening on Wednesday during the day ( Jarvis Cocker, I'm looking at you ). This, I think, is a good thing and I'm looking forward to folks utilizing [...]
Viva Voce - Devotion (Live On WOXY) The band premiered the tune during their SXSW visit to the station. Download each & every track from VV's session here. Rose City is out on 5/26. Visit Viva Voce on MySpace. MP3: Viva Voce - Devotion (Live On WOXY)

Viva Voce is a band we've always managed to miss connecting with at our Cincinnati studio, so we made a concerted effort to lock them in for a session during SXSW. As it turns out, dropping by EAR Studio was literally the first thing they did upon arriving in Austin on Wednesday, the third day of our live broadcast. The band, who for years had been solely husband/wife Kevin & Anita Robinson, created a stir in early 2009 by announcing their break-up, only to announce their reformation as a quartet in the same statement by [...]
The End of Verse? (Newsweek) A recent NEA report finds fiction reading on the rise, while readership of poetry has dropped significantly. Is an art form dying? Author Richard Ford: Chance is a Fine Thing (The Guardian) Of course, it's always my wish that readers do with my books what Walter Benjamin thought readers should do with stories - make use of them. *MP3: Viva Voce - "Devotion" *MP3: Viva Voce - "Devotion" (WOXY Session) Viva Voce's live WOXY session at SXSW was just posted and features two new songs off of their upcoming album, "Rose City" (Barsuk). Thanks to My Old Kentucky Blog for the tip. (Ian Anderson)

Here are two new songs from Viva Voce's upcoming album Rose City , due out May 26th on Barsuk . The band played MOKB's Official SXSW Showcase and HOT FREAKS! last week and crowds went crazy. Before their set, I had an opportunity to talk with their agent for quite some time and we both agreed that the band seems to be in a real transistion period. Now, after finally seeing them live, I'd say this was [...]

If the zoom on my camera was better, this photo of Kanye would be so much cooler: But I'm getting ahead of myself. The last day of SXSW always is a bit of haze. It's hard to consider watching bands all day and eating free food (and booze) as "work", but man, tell that to my feet. Dang. I started the day off at the Rachael Ray party, an event that had one of the longest lines I'd seen all week. I was able to [...]

The beauty of SXSW is that at any given hour, there are so many contrasting options and events sprawled across the greater Austin metropolitan area that there's always something for everyone. Friday and Saturday certainly proved this, offering a perfect balance of stadium-sized swagger (Metallica and Echo and the Bunnymen at Stubb's), laid-back lounging under the sun (everything at the French Legation Museum), and nearly everything else in between. Don't believe us? Check out the following photo recap from Days 3 and 4 of SXSW 2009 and see for yourself, and make sure to stay tuned for our full SXSW [...]

Frank Yang A much-needed sleep-in, however slight, threw me off schedule before evening awakening on the final day of SxSW, so I hoofed it to the Mohawk and day two of Hot Freaks without so much as a coffee - a decision that would prove to be very... unwise by that evening. But in the meantime, I had the boost provided by another day of great music and a fresh pair of socks to get me going. Greeting the early birds at noon were Austin trio Harlem , who seemed to treat [...]
Deep Blues Festival lineup announced, Peter Parker releases mixtape, P.O.S. covers Pearl Jam & MN artists @ SXSW

( Roadside Graves @ Mohawk ) The last day of SXSW just came to a close and I have very few regrets. Though there were a few key shows that I missed (I can't stand waiting in lines) overall everything seemed to work out for the best. Lesson #4: Know downtown's geography Lesson #5: Churches are great venues for gigs because of the atmosphere. And you can sit Lesson #6: Your schedule is worthless Indiecision has to be the most efficient gig watcher at SXSW '09. Since Wednesday, we've caught 47 shows with only Gallows being watched twice. Friday evening was packed in downtown Austin so careful planning (and a little luck) saw us catch some beautiful music at the Central Presbyterian Church and St David's Episcopal courtesy Fanfarlo, Dutch acoustic-country act Awkward I, Lisa Hannigan and Laura Marling. [Wednesday evening trawling at SXSW ...] The Aimless Never Miss , the Sleepover Disaster (at the Independent) — These two San Francisco labelmates (Devil in the Woods) deserved a little better than the modest crowd that found its way to the off-the-beaten path Independent, but neither disappointed. TAMN's post-rock twist on shoegaze, with great loud/soft dynamics and arresting time signature changes, frames some pretty serious thematic content — all but lost in the [...]
