Remember the whole punk/reggae crossover thing, and how it was a brilliant idea on paper, but the music always sounded awkward and clumsy? Here's the perfect exception. How did I miss Vivien Goldman's Launderette when it first came around in 1981? Very careless, very careless indeed. Goldman was a journalist and occasional musician with good connections. How good? Let's just say that this track features Steve Beresford, Keith Levene and Robert Wyatt, with an awesome high stepping bass part from Dub Syndicate's George Oban. And it's even better than the [...]

The story of Terry Tolkin's record label, No. 6 Records, has been somewhat lost amidst the nostalgic hosannas for mid- to late-90s indie rock. A new compilation of No. 6's 7-inch output, titled Speed Dating [Teenbeat], will hopefully change all that. Speed Dating has the feel of a great lost mix tape. If you think about it, a 7-inch is basically a band's thesis statement. Speed Dating captures that headlong rush of great pop ideas —the fizz and pop— many times over. Stylistically restless but aesthetically consistent, [...]

70'li yıllarda sıkı dostu Bob Marley ve grubu The Wailers ile bir eve kapanıp, albümlerinin kayıt süreci ve Bob Marley hakkında derin bilgilerin yer aldığı bir kitap(The Book Of Exodus) yazması da zaten bu durumu yeterli ölçüde açıklıyor. Şahsen, reggae ile ilgilenmiyorsam ve Chicks On Speed'in Girl Monster albümü sayesinde kendisinden haberdar olduysam [...]
This one's a smidge on the twee side, but might be just the thing to get your juices flowing this Veteran's Day. There's some songs about drugs, some songs about celebrities, at least one song (track 16) by a band that I can't find any information about whatsoever, and, at about the halfway mark, a former president talking. Try not to let your client get distracted at that particular moment. (more...)
