Aren't you ungrateful motherfuckers lucky. You whine and you whine about how I don't devote enough time or energy to sharing more music, and then you get a music-heavy Top Ten and a Sunday Mix Tape in the span of two days. It's almost as if I care enough about you to slake your thirst. Or maybe I just like being popular, and I know MP3s are the way to keep you parasites clinging to this little virtual host body. Who knows, some of you idiots who call me "soft lad" are actually going to hear some experimental [...]

Who knew they allowed the public to explore 2,700 acres of film sets in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area? I sure didn't! So when I started reading about Paramount Ranch this morning I decided that I was going to explore it today. Nicci and I packed some sandwiches and drove up the 101 to Agoura Hills. We had no problems finding the park, and the signs to Western Town were clearly marked. We parked outside the Park Ranger's station and walked over to the ranch. I was expecting a larger set, but to see all the facades was [...]
Well, I was going to see Vetiver at Spaceland until I realized that my last paycheck was hampered by my having taken days off, and I have no money until an advertising check arrives sometime this coming week. What will I do until then? Well, not much. Today I went to work and had enough money to eat one yogurt and one bagel. Dinner was a box of Crispix I've kept around the house for emergency hunger situations for about the past year. Those year-old Crispix sure don't taste very good anymore. So, what are my [...]

So if you didn't already know, then we were on the radio the other day. Yep, Huw Stephens was chatting us up on his Radio1 show as DIY Label of The Week. Which was of course very nice of him. But just before our feature Huw played a track that gave me shivers, the good kind of shivers. It was by a band called Voice Of The Seven Thunders and it sounded amazing. And it is amazing. And that name! It's kinda up there with "I [...]
I can safely say that I know very little about Voice of the Seven Woods (not to be confused with School of Seven Bells) except that they come from somewhere within the United Kingdom. They play trippy psychedelic jams that sound like what would happen if you locked the 13th Floor Elevators in an opium den for a week with nothing but a sitar. I love this track "The Fire in My Head" because not only does it sound like what could only be described as "gypsy psychedilia" but it also has this funky groove in it that is a [...]

Voice of the seven woods [...]

I like this guy. He knows what an album is for. Voice Of The Seven Woods' primarily instrumental debut takes you on a well-paced journey - mostly on the back of an acoustic-folk hay wagon, but sometimes you get dragged through the middle of a freakout vortex or along the ocean floor. That's life. Voice Of The Seven Woods - Sayai Nova from Voice Of The Seven Woods ( insound / amazon CD / amazon mp3 ) [...]

Joke of the Day: What did one asexual hipster say to the other at last week's Swervedriver reunion show in New York City? [Scroll to the very bottom -- below the MP3s -- for the answer] Talk about making a story out of nothing...CNN is reporting that rising gas prices are severely affecting indie bands' ability to tour this summer. Hmm...maybe if they spent less money on haircuts and sweaters -- wait a minute: CNN used the word "indie" in one of their top story headlines? Does that mean it's finally okay to say that [...]

I was one of the eight million or so computer users who downloaded Firefox 3 this week, and so far I am a bit hesitant to say it is a positive experience upgrading from 2. But, then again, when I first downloaded 2 I absolutely loathed it, and tried in vain to downgrade back to 1.5. When I realized the only archived version of 1.5 I could download was in Russian, I decided to suck it up and learn how to use 2. Now, a few years later, I have to once again suck it up and learn to love [...]

But running parallel to the director's desire for naturalism were his decidedly "unnatural" ideas for the film's transitions between reality and memory. "Much of the syntax of the dramatic action leads you to believe that you're in a memory, or a memory of a memory, but the reality of where you are in time and space is not exactly clear," Kuras explains. "One of the ways Michel wanted to suggest this visually was by calling back to early cinema, where magicians were using live-action practical effects in order to change time and space. He didn't want them to feel or [...]

"When I was young, I was extremely scared of dying. But now I think it a very, very wise arrangement. It's like a light that is extinguished. Not very much to make a fuss about." – Ingmar Bergman (14.7.1918 - 30.7.2007) Here I'm quoting Ingmar's words again. This time I'm going to say: No, I'm so afraid of it. It has been around me. From the death of Ingmar Berman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Wen Xing Yu (a famous and beloved local actor here), Max Roach, good [...]

English fret wrangler Rick Tomlinson has been quietly building up a reputation for himself with 7"s and low release CD-r's for some time now but it's with his first full length album that he really distinguishes himself from the acoustic raga scene. Make no mistake, Tomlinson can play with the technical supremacy and agility of the best that have sprouted up today, he's given quite the effort of setting himself aside the likes of James Blackshaw, Sir Richard Bishop and Jack Rose. But whereas expectation would have him release a purely acoustic album full of all the twists and noodles [...]
