Vox - A New Weird Australia Compilation (September 2011) The voice has served all sorts of purposes in modern sound, (ab)used frequently in popular music as more of a means to superficially command attention and engage on a human level with an often widely inattentive audience. To ignore the voice as a tool is to detach your music from immediate reality, to create sound as more of an art form; but to use it as means to achieve further abstraction from the world around us is something which has seen increasing use with the introduction of [...]

You all remember Dia Frampton, right — the runner-up (behind Javier Colon) on The Voice , who was coached by Blake Shelton? The 24-year-old singer, who initially wowed with her reinterpretations of Kanye West's "Heartless" and R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" on the singing competition will release her debut solo album (she was previously in a duo with sister Meg Frampton) Red next month. Ahead of that, Dia's hoping the video for new single "The Broken Ones" will entice you to check the LP out. Watch it below. [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive Charles Eshelman/FilmMagic Even though R.E.M. have gone their separate ways, the members remain political, voicing their support for the much-maligned Occupy Wall Street. Spinner sat down with bassist Mike Mills last week (the whole interview will be posted soon) to discuss the band's breakup while expressing his continued faith in the Occupier's main objectives. "I just marched with Occupy Wall Street yesterday (Nov.7)," he told Spinner [...]

i've become fascinated by the voice again recently. dylan nyoukis dragged out of foosty shelves, mattin's new rockist record pieced together starting with vocals, the fuss over lou reed croakling on lulu, my ever-present love for tim eriksen. so i guess now's as good a time as any to barely mention drew wright again. s'weird given the number of times i've seen him walking his tightrope live, twixt abstractions and one man folk harmonies, shruti drone and tape shenanigans, that he's earned scarcely a cheeky line or two. anyway, gerry loves records is rereleasing house music on cassette (and digital). it's kinda like [...]

Photograph by Chris Graham Who are Library Voices? They are a seven-piece pop group from Saskatchewan whose new album Summer of Lust should be popping up on a number of Best of 2011 lists. They are fun-loving literary types who will probably kick your ass at shot chess. They write with one foot in the 1960s and the other in the not-too-distant future. In short, they're a bit like Vampire Weekend, except that they're Canadian and don't give you a mild urge to punch them in the face. [...]

There's sweet justice in the recent consensus that George made the best post-Beatles solo album. I still maintain that Paul had the best career overall, but then Ringo was involved in this awesomeness , so the whole debate is bound for stalemate. Of the many gems on All Things Must Pass , this one manages to constantly, if quietly, amaze. Kinda like George himself. George Harrison - Run Of The [...]

Is it wrong that the overall ho-humness of the US version of The X Factor has us yearning for the February 5 return of The Voice ? A new promo clip for the next season of this past spring's surprise hit singing competition aired during Saturday Night Live over the weekend — an episode that featured Voice coach Adam Levine , along with his band Maroon 5 — and it features the trademark enthusiasm and a hint of the sassy banter we've come to expect from the show. Watch below. [...]
Justin Bieber, David Guetta, and Selena Gomez were amongst the stars present at the MTV Europe Music Awards this weekend, where the superfestive crooner was awarded for his charity work at the MTV Voices Dinner. (We think he should also be awarded for dealing those Mariah Yeater paternity rumors .) And while the prank caller donned his usual baseball cap for the ceremony, some artwork at the event depicted him wearing something much more unexpected — old-timey Revolutionary War-era garb — in a series of portraits featuring today's hottest pop stars in some [...]

Is the world beginning to believe what we know ..... if you want passion, entertainment and great songs you've got to go Irish? Did you notice Damien Rice's new look to the left of the stage in this clip? Photo credit: [...]
Sophomore effort from this Canadian outfit is easy to love. There's something utterly refreshing about Library Voices. No matter how many times you listen to, say, "If Raymond Carver Were Born In The '90s" or "Que Sera Sarah", it feels, as a twentieth century poet once said, like the first time. The outfit's literate, dance-inducing songs are informed by '60s pop but aren't wholly married to that time; there are also elements of loud '80s rock meant for stadiums (U2), and some that should have...
